The contact leased a 2008 Mercury Sable. While driving 20 mph up a hill, the contact smelled a strong odor inside the vehicle. She stopped the vehicle to inspect it and found no evidence related to the odor. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times but the failure could not duplicated. The odor seemed be inside of the vents which made it impossible to use the air conditioner. The vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 231. The current mileage was approximately 18,000.

2008 Mercury Sable awd had an electrical issue[melt down] that required replacement of the main electrical harness. Then in September of 2008 a sudden acceleration problem caused it to jump a concrete parking lot barrier and travel down into a drainage basin--40 feet. $9000+ damage. Repeated attempts to Ford has fallen in deaf ears. Updated 05/12/10 updated ivoq 05/17/10.
Since 2005, lights go out when in automatic mode, especially in rain and snow conditions. This has been checked three times by dealers but they could not find anything to repair. Driving at night and in limited visibility due to weather and then have the lights go off is an extremely unsafe position to be. The car occupants and other stakeholders are placed in jeopardy with this unresolved problem on the 2002 Mercury Sable.
Water and rain leak into blower housing and then onto passenger floor. This happens every time it rains and this disables the heating the and cooling systems in the car.

Water and rain leak into blower housing and then onto passenger floor. In heavy rain the blower can be heard agitating the water. There are many reports that this will eventually disable the blower motor and therefore the vehicle will have no defroster, creating a potential hazard.
I purchased a 2002 Mercury Sable in September, 2006. On January 19, 2007 while turning into my driveway going 3-5 miles an hour both frontal airbags deployed causing an estimated $3,000. 00 to $4,000. 00 in damages. The dealer has refused to assist me saying I bought the car "as is". They told me to file the claim with my insurance company. The insurance company said they could do nothing "there was no impact". Ford motor company said there was a 50,000 mile warranty. Your department sent me a service technical bulletin stating that Ford knew of this problem in may, 2002. I have been unable to get anyone (dealer, insurance company, finance company, or manufacturer) to help me with this issue. In February of this year 2009, the fuel pump, driver, computer, and transmission went out in this car. I have spent over $1,600. 00 in repair of this vehicle . Due to the depreciation of the car, the mechanical failures, and the safety issue of no airbags the vehicle is worth nothing. I still owe the finance company $6,000. 00 and have not been able to drive the car for the last 10 months. I was recently directed to research the consumer rights act of 1974, the magnuson-moss warranty act, sale of goods act 1979, alabama lemon laws, buyers remorse law, trade commission act, uniform commercial code, and consumer rights when buying a used car by the bbb. I have been denied my rights. No consumer should have to experience what I have. Every consumer has the right to expect a car they purchase to meet reasonable standards. There was a grave issue of safety for me and my granddaughter when the airbags deployed. Thank god we were not injured. All of these failures have significantly impaired the use, value, and safety of this vehicle! they arose out of the ordinary use of the vehicle and not as a result of abuse. The motor vehicle is out of service and in the custody of the dealer due to repair attempts, one of which occurred during the lemon law rights period.
For over ten (10) years the headlights (but not the side driving lights) have been going off (for about 3 minutes) and then coming back on. This does not occur every time the lights come on and seems to be more frequent in the summer time when it is warm or hot outside. The date below is just approximately when this problem started and is not the only date/'time it has occurred, it has occurred sporadically but continuously since that date.

headlights go out and immediately come back on. This has happened four times,in complete darkness, each time in a cold vehicle in the morning within 3 miles of home. Three of these events occurred in relation to stopping, starting , or turning at stop sign. One event occurred at highway speed on straight hardtop road. Vehicle is under warranty and has been tested by the dealership where it was purchased and they were unable to find a mechanical or electrical cause.

When driving my vehicle a clicking under the dash will occur, at the same time my seat belt light will come on and go off, when it goes off I lose my power steering, power brakes, windshield wipers, stereo and window opener. The oddest thing is everything is fully restored when in neutral or park.

The vehicle stalled intermittently while driving at any speed. The vehicle was at the dealer for repairs. The condition maybe due to an electrical problem.
On Thursday, 7/8, I made an appointment to bring our 2000 Mercury Sable to tomball Ford in tomball, texas on the following Saturday morning to have the recall work done (they only returned part of the recall letter, but it was regarding a stop lamp switch). To make sure the dealership had plenty of time to complete the work, we dropped our car off Friday night, filling out the appropriate paperwork, leaving the keys and all information required in their drop box. We called Saturday morning and was told they had "forgotten" to check the drop box until 11:00 so the work wouldn't be completed until 2:00 that afternoon. The recall notice said it would only take about 1/2 day. At 3:50 (10 minutes prior to their closing) we contacted rick, who identified himself as the service manager at tomball Ford. He said they "just didn't get to it" and it wouldn't be ready until sometime Monday. My husband explained we needed both of our cars on Monday and asked if they would supply us with a rental car. It was obviously tomball Ford's fault that we would not have a car. Rick said no, that this particular recall didn't call for a rental car to be supplied by the dealership. It's people like rick who make this whole thing a pain in the butt. He should have been more than happy to supply us with a free rental car because it was totally their fault that the work didn't get done. I don't think we will ever buy an american made car again. At least the people at the local Toyota dealership admit when it's their fault and rectify the problem. It's obvious that tomball Ford could care less if they have our current or future business.
While the cruise control was set at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled then restarted by itself. The dealer could not duplicate or determine the cause of the problem. The cause of the problem was in the switch and a loose wire. The vehicle restarted on it's own and was sometimes hard to start. (hard to start, hot or cold) when the vehicle died at low speeds, it did not restart and was hard to start immediately after but would start within 2-3 minutes.

Brakes shudder when applied, been cut down once already stopped for about 5000 miles then started again increasing in intensity as mileage climbed, also car will shut off for a moment or two causing loss of all power, and all dash indicator lights to come on, also had to replace brake light switch twice now.
The most recent problems are electrical in nature. First, all of the passenger power windows have failed. They can only be controlled by the driver side panel. Second, even though all of the doors are securely closed, the interior dome light will remain on between 20 seconds and several hours. There were occasions when the light would come on by itself while I was driving down the highway to work. An audible clicking noise could be heard from under the dash. The click is similar to the sound made when manually operating the switch. Third, this started on Sunday, 01/19/03, the headlights will turn on and off by themselves while the vehicle is off and the headlight switch is off. Additionally, with the car running and the daytime lights only, the highbeam indicator came on. When I turned the headlights on, the indicator went off. When I turned the headlights off, the highbeam indicator came back on. The highbeam indicator eventually turned off on its own within 5 or 10 minutes. Previous problems have included front end suspension related failures and an oil pan that sprung a leak in December 2001 at around 78k miles. The oil pan sprung another leak in December 2002. The service dealer attributed the leak to the same problem and another failure with the oil pressure switch. I agreed to the oil pressure switch repair and told them that if the oil pan gasket failed a 2nd time (original cause of leak in 2001), that it was due to poor repair work. They tightened the bolts to the oil pan. The winter weather has hampered my efforts to check for the leak. Although I no longer smell burning oil.
For years I have had electrical problems on 1998 Mercury Sable--the dome light, floor lights and door lights constantly on. I keep the dome light off. The floor light bulbs were removed. Door lights are constantly on. However, 1. 5 years ago, I lost all headlights at night upon entering a highway. I could risk using high beams by holding in place. Multifunction arm was replaced and the dial on dashboard. Then both dials were replaced for fan and heating, defrost and air conditioner. Then told my computer chip needs to be replaced. I have no defroster, heat, fan or air conditioner. Also, last year after dealing with service engine light on and off then staying on for years, had to replace the emissions sensor for car to be inspected. Would a dealer be willing to give me a defroster fix and/or heat. Many people have told me that Ford and Mercury are known for electrical problems. And over 1500 dollars later and I still have a defective, unsafe car.
While exiting vehicle after driving for about twenty minutes, vehicle caught fire. Cause is unknown. There were no warning. Please provide any further information. Mr.
Electrical system shut down, loses all power. The auto has accelerated on numerous occasions while stopped in traffic. Teh air conditioner shut down while traveling, twice the vehicle experienced complete electrical shut down, on one occasion requiring the vehicle to be towed. Consumer is requesting a vehicle replacement and for the failures to be recalled.
While driving, power steering, power windows, and radio will quit working , consumer can hear a clicking sound under dash, everything comes back on without notice.
This vehicle has had emission, mechanical, and electrical problems . This is primarily emission issues between the check engine's and the gas tank.
When the gear shift indicates the vehicle is in drive, reverse or overdrive the power steering almost goes completely out and the vehicle loses all electrical power. (steering, radio, locks, dash instruments).

While driving on I-95 started rain/downpour tried to turn on the windshield wipers and they would not work, then the lights on the dashboard came on/airbag light would not go off, and windows would not go up or down. Consumer stopped vehicle until rain stopped, then drove to a near by mechanic, and they said it was an electrical problem. Took to dealer they said they would check the system out. Then they test drove vehicle, and said it was okay. Consumer was petrified to drive on I-95, especially when needing windshield wipers.
Thats it the transmission went out at 45,000, the wheel bearing went out soon after purchased, the interior electrical went out soon after purchase also the power seat quit working.

When the gear shift indicates the vehicle is in drive, reverse or overdrive the power steering almost goes completely out and the vehicle loses all electrical power/ windows/radio, etc. The vehicle will be checked by dealer.
Electrical system malfunctioned without warning, causing power steering/ brakes/dash, and lights to fail. Dealer has not seen vehicle.
