The knob to turn on the headlight broke off. It seems to be made of plastic that is not strong enough. Now it's very difficult to turn on the headlights. We read that this is a problem in the 2000 model and Ford had a recall on the 2000 model. We had the exact same problem with the 2001 model. Maybe some of the faulty knobs were installed on some of the 2001 models and those should be included in the recall as well since it's the exact same problem.

Automatic headlights relay soddard into backside of fuse panel (gem) was bad location for a person with no experience to fix or locate most people never got it fixed because of no experience and amount of money to have an electrical mechanic to fix. I understand there was a few people did get it fixed through a recall but I didn't and I never got a recall for this in the mail. I would like Ford motor company fix this because I was never notified of this problem. My car has had this problem for about 12 years.
I have a fully loaded 2000 Mercury Sable LS that has a major problem. The car has automatic on headlights and driving lights. Sometimes when I am driving down the road the headlights go out. Strange, the parking lights stay on but no headlights. This morning I had to pull off the highway and almost got hit by a rock truck. Turn the car off and on and they come back on. Also, sometimes when you manually turn the switch they will come back on. This could result in a major incident if this would happen when I'm driving along a 70 mph on the interstate and the lights went out. This has been happening for about 3 months now.

On three occasions over past few weeks, my headlights have gone out while driving at night. They both turn off for 1-3 seconds, and then turn back on. All other lights (interior instrument lights, and exterior parking lights) remain on. I did not hit any bumps or have any other shaking that would indicate a loose wire. This was both headlights, so I do not expect a loose bulb or single wire.
For over ten (10) years the headlights (but not the side driving lights) have been going off (for about 3 minutes) and then coming back on. This does not occur every time the lights come on and seems to be more frequent in the summer time when it is warm or hot outside. The date below is just approximately when this problem started and is not the only date/'time it has occurred, it has occurred sporadically but continuously since that date.
2004 Mercury Sable
headlights go out and immediately come back on. This has happened four times,in complete darkness, each time in a cold vehicle in the morning within 3 miles of home. Three of these events occurred in relation to stopping, starting , or turning at stop sign. One event occurred at highway speed on straight hardtop road. Vehicle is under warranty and has been tested by the dealership where it was purchased and they were unable to find a mechanical or electrical cause.

My left headlamp housing has water on the inside of the protective housing around the headlamp and parking lamp. The moisture is increased to the point where nighttime lighting has been adversely diminished. There are no cracks, stone chips, or other visible evidence of damage to the exterior of the protective cover to the light housing. The moisture was first noticeable in may 2005. The vehicle has 30,000 miles and I have owned it since new. I can supply photographs of the defective housing if needed. The diminished nighttime visibility from the headlight is compromising operational safety. The vehicle VIN number 1mehm55s22g638841.

With each rain or wash the right front headlight assemble takes in moisture, causing condenses on the inside of the glass and remains for several day until evaporation takes place.
Consumer states that there is poor visibility at night due to the plastic covering on the headlights. Please provide additional information. Nlm.
Headlights become distorted of a film developing on covering of the lens. This covering prevents visibility at night. Owner is aware of others around the same year with same problem. Please describe details.
