36 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/06/2009

I took my daughters 2001 Sable in for it's annual safety inspection and was advised by the mechanic that the passenger side rear coil spring was broken and needed to be replaced. He advised me that this was a common problem on these vehicles and he thought there was a recall. I called my local dealer and was advised that the recall only covered the front coil springs. I will be checking into the replacement of the front springs under the recall. Since we purchased the vehicle used approx. 1 year ago it's possible the prior (original) owner had them replaced previously. I believe based on the number of complaints that the recall should be expanded to include the rear springs. Since discovering this issue I have purchased replacement springs and struts at a cost of $330. 00 and will be installing them ASAP.

41 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/20/2009

I drive a 2002 Mercury Sable. I was turning left into a gas station driveway and I heard a loud metal sound, as loud as a gunshot. I got out of the car and looked underneath and all around the area adjacent to the car but I could not see anything. I was able to drive the car to a repair shop without incident, but every time I went over the slightbest bump, the car sounded like it was going to fall apart (lots of metal scraping noises). The repair shop said that my front coil springs had broken and that I was lucky that the spring had not punctured my tire. The mechanic called Ford to check on a recall for the springs because he said that this was a very common problem for Ford/Mercury cars. Ford informed him that my car was not included in the recall. I went ahead with the repair which was a complicated mess because of twisting, rust, etc. My bill was close to $900. 00. I was just thankful that no one in my family was injured as a result of this faulty equipment. As stated in many of the complaint forums relating to this spring problem, I agree that Ford is just waiting until there are deaths involved with this problem before they will take any action. Just another example of what is wrong with the american automobile industry. I owned a SAAB for 18 years until my husband totaled it. I owned a Toyota before that. This Mercury was forced upon me because of my economic condition at the time. I will never own another Ford/Mercury vehicle again. Just an added note: my husband just found out yesterday that his rear coil springs on his 2001 Ford taurus are broken. I am anxious to see if Ford will take responsibility for this spring failure.

When the tire was pulled, it was determined that the rear coil spring had broken, puncturing the tire. I found the following on a website: "the office of defects investigation (odi) has received 355 complaints from consumers residing in "salt belt" states that allege front suspension coil spring fracture in the subject vehicles. (note: for purposes of this investigation, the "salt belt" includes connecticut, delaware, the district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin). Approximately 72% of the complainants allege the broken coil spring punctured the adjacent tire . Resulting in loss of inflation pressure. Odi is aware of 3 alleged crashes related to the alleged defect resulting in one person injured. The subject vehicles are substantially similar to those previously investigated by odi (pe02-080 and pe04-044) and recalled by Ford (NHTSA recall no. 04v-332). An engineering analysis has been opened to assess the frequency, scope and safety consequences of the alleged defect. " I would appreciate it if someone could review this complaint.

68 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/30/2008

July 30th 2008, I took my car in for routine maintenance of oil change, tire rotation, etc. Repair shop discovered the left and right rear coil springs were broken. Broken in such a way that they were surprised that the jagged end of the coil springs was not rubbing into my tire. I have no ideal when this might have happened, there was no indication that they had failed. Although the casing around the coil spring easily tore by hand and the broken part of the coil spring is rusted. It scares me to think of how long I might have been driving around with my car on the edge like this. My car has 62,896 miles on it, but exactly when these coil springs failed is unknown. They want upwards of $800. 00 to replace coil spring and struts. $500. 00 just for coil springs. I had no choice other than to get coil springs replaced. It seemed odd to me that both sides would fail and both side are broken in pretty much the same place. So I gave myself July 31, 2008 for researching the rear coil springs on my 2001 Mercury Sable, hence my complaint to NHTSA. On Aug 1, 2008 I will take my car back to repair shop for repair. I will keep my old coil springs in the hope that someone finally realizes that this is a issue that needs to be addressed in the manner of a recall. I have read some of the other complaints and failure of these rear coil springs can come at any time with or without the owners knowledge. Please don't wait until something more fatal happens before Ford and NHTSA acknowledges that there is a serious problem with these rear coil springs.
