37 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/16/2007

Broken front and rear springs on Mercury Sable 4 door car. The front springs broke first and was very expensive to repair and if the broken spring had it the tire I would have crashed on the freeway. The rear spring broke last week and did destroy the tire and again my life was threaten by a crash. Ford only recognized that they would place spring guards on the front springs to save they responsibility from have front tires destroyed and killing drivers. Ford will not admit they have a problem; I spent one half hour on the phone with them at the corporate office this week. Because my car is older than 5 years, they will not even extend any consideration for the huge repair costs including new tires that were destroyed. I have owned many cars the last forty years and was a licensed master auto mechanic in the state of michigan and also a voc. Ed teacher in power mechanics ( automechanics) . This is a very serious public issue and when tires are ruined by the broken springs the car will go out of control !.

38 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/01/2007

Both rear springs on my car are broken. One of the front springs also broke (and has been repaired) and my mechanic has told me the other is about to go. I have found out that Ford recalled the front springs due to a substandard material used in construction, which is prone to road salt corrosion. Since I live in the northeast, road salt is a common occurrence during the winter months. The rear springs are made of the same material and are also corroding. It'll cost me around $1,600 to compensate for a design flaw that Ford is washing it's hands of (at 100,000 miles, my front springs aren't even covered under the recall, even though the problem was there from day-1). One would think Ford would do the right thing and replace the defective rear springs as well. I guess the number of potential deaths caused by a rear blow-out is below their threshold, so they'll take their chances in court. This is why we need NHTSA oversite. However, NHTSA has only required Ford to recall the front springs to date. Ford expects people to buy their cars, but they don't stand behind them (even when it is a known manufacturing defect). That is why many people are buying japanese cars. I, for one, will never buy Ford again.

39 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/25/2007

Broken rear spring, causing tire damage. (front springs replaced by Ford 2 months ago free under replacement program, dealer tells me that the Ford replacement program does not apply to rear springs).

40 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/17/2007

Car not handling properly. Brakes squealing. Very poor gas mileage. Car riding lower in back. Sounded/felt like I was riding on a flat, tire pressure was down, but not badly (3 lbs). Took to mechanic for tuneup. Advised rear tire bad with flat spots. Purchased tires to be installed. When mechanic pulled tire/wheel to install, noticed rear spring was broken. Pulled tire/wheel from other side. It too, was broken. One break was new, the other older as ends were rusted over. There are rub marks and wear on the rubber covering over both springs as well as the coating coming off. I have the broken springs and have taken photos that show brakes and discoloration. Two (2) new tires, two (2) rear springs and alignment cost $614. 68. I frequently have my grandchildren with me. Either one or both of them could have been severely injured has the pieces come through the seats.

41 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

Rear coil springs on my 2000 Mercury Sable are shot. I have to replace them. Car rarely ever had more than 2 people in it.

42 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/02/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. While the tires were being rotated, the contact was informed that the rear springs had failed and punctured the rear tires. The mechanic stated that this should not have occurred on a vehicle of this year, make, and model. There was a recall for the front springs on the 1999 and 2001 models. The dealer stated that nothing could be done since the VIN was not related to the recalls. The contact sent an email to Ford motors and was informed that she would hear from them in three days. The rear tires were replaced. The contact has the invoice for the tires. The rear springs have not been replaced. The powertrain was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 83,000. Updated 02-01-08. Updated 02/01/08.

43 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

2001 Mercury Sable taken in for tire rotation and balance. When the rear tires were removed, mechanic noticed that both coil springs were broken at base. He said I was lucky in that the breaks were to the center of the car and not towards the tire side, which would have blown the tire. The left rear tire would not balance, it wobbled, resulting in purchasing a new tire. Cost to repair, $550. 00. I am no metallurgist, but looking at the breaks I'd say that it looks like poor heat treatment of the metal coil that caused the breaks. Searching the internet revealed numerous complaints regarding 2001 taurus for same coil breaking problem (same body as Sable). Why is there no recall by Ford to rectify this problem?. Because in this country there has to be serious injury or death before any one reacts. How pathetic is that!.

44 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/25/2007

Rear of my 2001 Mercury Sable had been sagging for some time, to the point I was afraid that the top of the wheel well would hit the top of the tire, (on several occasions the rear end did bottom out on slightly steep inclines). I finally took it to a mechanic, who said that both rear springs had failed (broke), and from the rust accumulated on the brake areas, it had been broken for sometime. I called the local Ford dealer in quincy who said that this wasn't an issue. I had another mechanic, (my brother due to the high cost), replace the rear springs and shocks. I know that there has been a recall on the front springs (road salt corrosion), but I would be curious to find out how many other Sables/taurus's have had the same problem.

45 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/25/2007

Ford motor company recall for front springs on 2001 Mercury Sables but not rear springs my vehicle has just over 60,000 miles and I had to replace both rear springs due to braking how is the rear springs any less of a danger then the front springs.

46 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/15/2007

3 of 4 springs broke on Sable at a hotel in indiana. 2 rear springs and 1 front spring. Vehicle was not moving. Repair included 2 tires, 1 rear strut, one front steering bar and all four springs also required rental vehicle for 1 week, and an additional trip to indianapolis to get the repaired vehicle.

47 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/07/2007

We own a 2001 Mercury Sable which was recalled previously due to problems with the front springs breaking on certain vehicles. Guards were placed on the front springs to avoid tire punctures. In may 2007 my wife travelled about 200 miles with passengers. Upon returning, one of the front springs fell apart in our yard. After the dealer inspected the vehicle, both front springs were broken, along with one of the rear springs. She was driving on highways with three broken springs! the rear springs seem similar in design to the front, if not identical. They have never been subject to a recall and the bill for replacement of both the rear springs was $632. 30. The dealer refused to help. After speaking to the service manager at the dealer, she suggested pursuing this, claiming they have repaired lots of rear springs on these vehicles. She seemed to imply they have been a problem as well as the front units, although they have never been recalled and therefore not covered by Ford. Travelling 65 mph on three broken springs is an accident waiting to happen. Ford should be recalling these vehicles before someone gets killed.

48 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/01/2007

My 2002 Mercury Sable, which has 104000 miles, had a second broken rear spring in less than a year. The first one,at 92000 miles, was not covered by a recall and comprised replacing the rear strut as well, both at my expense, $382. I don't believe a spring should break under normal driving conditions. It looks as if I may have to go the same way this time, as I haven't see a recall on rear springs for this vehicle. Or is there?.

49 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 02/22/2007

Rear springs on a 2002 Sable have broken. Nothing is being done by the companies despite numerous complaints.

Failure Date: 01/03/2007

Rear spring broke on 2001 Mercury Sable-4 dr. Sedan. Car sat in unheated garage for 1 week while on vacation. Temperature in garage approx. 30 degrees. When vehicle used first time after vacation on Jan. 3, 2007, while backing out of garage, heard loud noise of something breaking or possibly being run over. Stopped vehicle to check for anything behind or under vehicle. Found nothing. Continued to drive vehicle to work, approx. 25 miles without further incident. Noticed upon return home that evening that vehicle was setting low at rear of vehicle. I did not take to a dealership until April 2, 2007. Used another vehicle for transportation. Wife used this vehicle only as needed until the dealership visit this morning. Was informed of the broken rear spring.

54 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/26/2006

2001 Mercury Sable LS right rear spring broke while operating the vehicle. A piece of the spring protruded and gouged the inside sidewall of the right rear tire down to the tires metal core. The car was being operated at highway speeds in heavy traffic immediately following the incident. Tire fail is imminent. Had this occurred while the vehicle was being operated loss of control and a collision would be very likely.

57 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

I took the car into service for a routine brake check and a problem with both rear tires leaking air and discovered that both rear springs had fractured. The passenger side spring fracture was so severe that it left a 2 inch sharp projectile against the tire. I replaced both springs and tires.

58 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Driver side rear coil spring broke and grooved tire. Strut, tire, spring and alignment are required for repair.

60 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/01/2006

The kost tire store told me that my right rear spring appeared to have been broken for some time, and the left rear spring had a crack in it, on my '02 Sable with 50k miles they informed me the car was a danger to drive, and that it needed new struts and springs. I returned it to the dealer immediately, and was told there was no known problem with springs on that year Sable. The dealer replaced both springs for $350, not covered under the Ford extended warranty, and informed me that there was no need to replace the struts. I picked up the car on July 6, and realized there was a further problem because of the loud rumbling going over bumps, and a loud bang when hitting a bump at highway speed. It went back to the dealer July 7, and they determined the struts needed replacing. By then, the car had bounced on the rear tire so much that it had two bulges and also had to be replaced.

61 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

I own a 2002 Mercury Sable with 58,000 miles on it. The right rear spring broke while the car was parked. The end of the spring was now rubbing the sidewall of the tire which made a loud noise so I didn't drive it. The repair shop estimates $400 for repair. There is a recall on other Ford springs, including 2001 Sable, but not this car. I think they have a larger problem.

62 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

2000 Mercury Sable. The right rear spring failed and punctured the right rear tire.

63 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

64 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/30/2006

2001 Sable rear coil spring corroded and broke. The broken spring punctured the tire causing a blowout. Our dealer informed us that both springs needed to be replaced. Additionally we were informed that there was a recall on the front springs o4s17. However the recall is not to replace the springs, they will be installing special shields on the front springs so that if a spring does fail it will not cause the tire to blow out. This to me is unacceptable! how can you allow the Ford to produce and sell faulty and unsafe automobiles without demanding that they fix the problem and not apply a band-aid?.

65 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/04/2006

Rear springs broke. About 1 year ago I replaced the front springs. Although my car is a 2002 this should have been involved in the 2001 recall related to suspension. This is a safety issue that Ford should take care of before anyone does get hurt.

66 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 12/30/2005

While eating breakfast, my wife heard a metal popping sound outside near our 2001 Mercury Sable. When she went out to investigate, she found a piece of the rear right coil spring. This happened minutes before she was to leave with our children. I contacted Ford and the dealer and was left to pay for the towing and repairs $80 & $303. 99 for a total of $383. 99. This is the second time this has happened. The first being a front coil spring and tire which was blown out then subsequently replaced by Ford on a recall. I find it disturbing that the springs with the same faulty metal were allowed to remain on the rear suspension and not replaced. Twice my family has averted disaster connected with these coil springs. When is Ford going to do the right thing and replace all these faulty springs? maybe after enough people are injured or die!.

67 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/17/2005

The rear coil spring of the 2001 Sable is fractured. Although no damage is yet done, I am concerned the same type of contact with a tire can happen as with the front springs. Ford does no, but should have a recall and program like the front coil spring.

68 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/22/2005

Diagnostic from dealer; right rear spring broken; tire bruised sidewall (tires were just installed on 10/21/05). Replace both rear springs and replace both rear stabilizer links. Had to have the car towed on a flat bed to the dealer to have fixed. Had to have front springs fixed (7/25/05) as they broke also.

69 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/20/2005

I have a 2001 Mercury Sable and I got a flat tire when the left rear coil spring broke and cut into the inside wall of my tire. In fact, I got two flats because the tire repair company did not see the problem the first time. The Mercury dealer repaired the spring at my expense and I also paid for a new tire at the tire repair store.

70 Rear Suspension Springs problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/21/2005

The consumer stated that the two rear springs broke while driving. The vehicle was a 2001 Mercury Sable. The consumer received a recall on the front springs, but not on the rear springs. While driving the consumer heard a grinding noise and took the car to a goodyear dealer to have brakes checked. The mechanic found that the springs were broken. The consumer had no idea when the springs broke. The car was not driven that much. The consumer talked to the dealership, and they said that the car was not under warranty and it was the consumer's tough luck. Ford said the same thing about the warranty. Ford was not willing to help the consumer with the expenses for the repairs. The repair work was done with no help from Ford.
