Service Brakes Problems of Mini Cooper

While driving straight on an interstate highway at approximately 65 mph, the right front and left rear brakes momentarily locked up after the windshield wipers were turned on due to light rain starting to fall. This happened multiple times, only when the wipers were turned on. There were no warning lights illuminated in the instrument cluster or dash displays. This nearly caused a loss of vehicle control on several occasions and nearly caused an accident as well. The car has been routinely serviced to factory schedules including brake fluid time based changes. There appeared to be some occasional delay in the release of the brakes when starting from a stop. The brakes were serviced after this incident and the service center recommended completing a few panic stops to operate the abs system. They could not explain how the wiper system can cause one circuit of the braking system to operate momentarily. A search of web forums for the f56 series Mini shows that this random locking of the rf & lr brakes with teh wipers in operation has happened to quite a few other owners of similar Mini Coopers. This problem creates a very significant safety risk.

Purchased the car new. On day two of having the vehicle and on a cold start in the morning, I noticed that the brake was very difficult to press in order to get the car started. Additionally, when applying the brake during driving it seemed to take a bit longer to slow down. I took the car into the dealer's service department and they confirmed that it was a bad brake booster. I am now waiting for the part to come in from germany, which is backordered.

Driver's side rear caliper appears to be rubbing into rotor. . . BMW claims that at 16,845 miles from new, that this is merely wear and tear. . . I believe it is a dangerous design flaw and should be properly vetted. . .

Without any warning lamps,the vehicle started pulling left when the brakes were applied a certified mechanic looked at it and feels that is the due to a defective dsc/abs control unit. The unit hasn't been otherwise inspected but is available for inspection.

I’m unable to have a Mini dealership confirm safety of my veh as there are no dealerships in state of maine, closest in peabody MA 1. 5 hrs away. It’s going on 1 yr & no remedy on the horizon? I called Mini USA hotline and they can’t help. This is unacceptable. Are they required to resolve in a timely manner? should they be required to buy my veh back as it wouldn’t pass inspection & unable to drive?? please provide next steps. Thank you.

The traction control light with antilock brake warning illuminated. Therefore my antilock brakes are inop along with traction control.

I purchased the car in dover PA . Inspection sticker had same milage as on car so I shoulda knew he slapped a sticker on . Drove 150 miles dash lit ip like chrismas tree. 1st thing left window wont work , then left lock wont work had to lock from passenfger dide. Then door wont open at all . Have to get ou t passenger door . Know that wont open have to put down passenger window pull handel to get out . Car is possessed light work whren they want does all kinda crazt stuff . Batter has problems . Charge and still cant start it . And hatch locks so I cant get to battery. Power steering leaking going bad . Timing belt making noise . No power on hills . Cracking noise in right front pulls to right had . Hazard to me ive been locked inside three times could get out of car I coulda sat in heat and died or cold and froze . Cant get out of car when it ts electric doors dont work . Car sucks . This has been gradual thing these events from Feb to may . Now I just hate the car.

The proportioning value that controls brake function had a catastrophic failure and caused the brake calipers especially the left front to lock suddenly. The caused the left front wheel to lock and caused the car to pull hard to left and become difficult if not impossible to control. The car pulled hard left and risked the car moving uncontrollably into on coming traffic. The failed part was saved and is available for inspection. The safety of the driver(my wife) was put at risk during the loss of control of the car. Other cars in the area were also put at risk simply due to the loss of control of our car. The problem was confirmed by the independent service center. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to the dealership. The dealership thought the root cause was the brake master cylinder. This turned out not to be the case. The root cause was the failed proportioning valve. This caused the calipers to lock. The discs, rotors, calipers and proportioning value were replaced. There were no warning lights and the car had been taken for regular service at the dealership which was included in the purchase of the car. We were told that there is no warning light for a failure of this part.

Left brake light continues to blow out with a loud pop through the speakers. Instrument at parts store shows abs warning but not on dash. Bulb has been replaced approximately 5 times and continues to blow out after a day or two. No one can seem to find the problem.

The vehicle has been presenting issues with breaks, electrical issues, turning off while driving, misfires, air bags don't work, adas sometimes don't work, the vehicle chokes and has difficulty running at times, among other issues. There has been a recall since last year and I've tried contacting the manufacturer multiple times, but the issue has not been fixed yet. All of these problems are a great safety hazard for me and my family while on the road.

When pressing the break, the engine revs. I turned on the car and pressed the break. The engine revved. When I pressed the brake again it revved up to 7000 rpm. I turned off the car. I did this several times and it continued to happen. I was afraid to put the car in gear. While driving down the road a month ago the Mini engine rpm raised and the car went faster even though I was not pressing the gas. I was able to stop it.

I have made several attempts to reach out to dealer. The check engine light came on the same day I purchased car. I brought the car back, the dealer said they would replace it, but couldn't do the work that day. They provided me with a false inspection report. They never followed up with me after several months had gone by and several phone calls had been made with them refusing to return my call. The car turns off on its on while driving. The brakes are also not good on the car. I had to get an oil change, wiping blades after a month of having the car. The ac fan is also not functioning. I would like to escalate this issue, because I am unable to pass my state inspection as well as feeling unsafe to drive a car that can turn off anytime on the road while driving. I waited to take to inspection because I was waiting on the dealer to communicate when they will replace the part. After several months of refusing to respond to my phone calls and emails. I have decided to report their intentional negligence. I also purchased a warranty. Through this company epovo auto group. I have not received a follow document certifying my warranty purchase through them. Uncertain of legitimacy of this warranty as well. I have filed a complaint with bbb and federal trade commission. I have not received a response. The following failed inspection codes: p0014, p0015, mil command.

Brake pedal at same level as gas pedal at times ( they are close together) my shoe on the brake also hits the gas to excellerate pressing jarred in a panic will stop the car and I will put it in neutral city street or hi-way in motion.

I made a right turn from the main street, into the parking lot of a strip mall, then an immediate left turn, and another right turn into the right angle parking slot. All the while having my foot on the brakes, I started to shift into park, when it was in the right spot. The Mini instead coming to a stop, revved up, jumped the curb and hit the store in the front. The air bags deployed. I had my foot on the brakes really hard, all the time but the brake pedals were locked up. It would not move up or down. Sat hard on the floor! when the tow truck came, the brakes were still locked up and the gear was in park and couldn't be moved from there. The seat belts couldn't be retracted either. Mini engineer claims that there is nothing wrong with the car and I can safely drive it after the body is repaired. I am having a difficult time with this conclusion. The car's brakes and gear were locked up, and had to be lifted on a flatbed and taken to the repair shop; I still maintain something within the car malfunctioned.

Driving 45 mph on busy city four-lane road, I braked gradually in approach to red light, which is my normal braking style. Car did not come to a complete stop--brakes only worked to a point but did not completely stop car; simultaneously engine revved to very high rpm. I threw transmission into park and turned off ignition lest my car ram car ahead of me. Very frightening. At previous two lights I had noticed that brakes were acting funny, not bringing car to a complete stop but I had left plenty of braking distance and was able to let car roll to a stop, in spite of brakes not effecting a complete stop . At those two lights the runaway engine (high rpm) did not occur or I would have pulled over right then. However, engine revving to high rpm has also occurred occasionally when pulling into garage but I had not given this a lot of thought because I have quickly turned off ignition. Now I know it's very dangerous situation. Of course I am not driving it but am having it towed to dealer for repair. The car has been serviced regularly at dealer and has 24,239 miles on it. There has never been a necessity for repairs on this Mini Cooper clubman.

I was driving on the highway 12/04/2014 with cruise control active going about 75 mph. A truck in front of me became too close because he was going slower. My car began accelerating and I hit the brake to slow down, and DE-activate the cruise control. However nothing happened and my Mini-cooper continued to accelerate and I hit the rear end of the truck. I used the cruise control on/off and turned off the cruise control and I stopped accelerating. I changed lanes to pull over, however I had no brakes. I exited the highway as there was a big hill, however with no brakes I went flying through an intersection while honking my horn, and through the red light. The only option was back on the highway after the light and I eventually slowed down and then used the emergency brake to stop. I really panicked and thought I was going to die. The truck had no damage, however the Mini-cooper got a dent on the hood. This also happened briefly about a month ago, where I hit the brake and my Mini continued to accelerate while in cruise control, however when I turned off the cruise control that time, the brakes were fine and I had a close miss of rear ending another car. In hindsight I should have put my 6 speed in neutral or turned off the car. At the time, these options didn't come to me in a panicked state.

The power steering pump, fan, hydraulic fluid pump chf 1 core charge) and hose clamp were replaced by the dealer 5 days earlier. Mini Cooper/BMW sent me a letter for voluntary replacement because my Mini copper 2003 had too many complaints with this issue. The car was running ok except for the power steering after the replacement I only drove about 70 miles because I was off from my school. The incident happened on July 15, 2013 approximately at 3:45 pm. I drove about 30 miles back from work. Parked the car in front of rite aid in rancho palos verdes. When I returned to the car it wouldn't start. Used jump cables for several minutes without success. Went to my mechanic close by. My mechanic came to look at the car, he was able to start the car. I drove back home about 6 miles. When I parked the car the car was very hot and most of the lights in the panel were lighten. I must mention that my car has a new battery and new starter (both were replaced 9 months ago). It seems that the problem is directly related to the electrical system and to the replacement of the part on 7/17/2013.

Dear NHTSA, I nearly lost my life 3wks back, my car is filled with aftermarket prdt. My cars computer is failed also, which won't alert or record any incident. I tried talking to Miniusa&carmax, they wont listen. I have an heart condition now coz of the near death experience. I developed a low high bp 80/103 & fast heartbeat, which I am taking med. Now the car is with universal city Mini of noho! cars break sys. Is an after market prod. My car computer/dash display check engine light or signal comes on every 3-4 months, when it does, the light will stay on for a day or two, then it disappears, when I mentioned this to Mini dealership, car key records all the activities of the cars engine and incidents, when the rep. At dealership downloaded the car key, he couldn't find a single incident, then I showed him the pic I took. . He was surprised. . . " this car is nothing but a lemon" poorly handled by carmax and Mini. This car will kill someone, if you let it drive. Please save my life and others. Car was parked in driveway with hand brake engaged. 5 minutes later, the car rolled down driveway and hit a ditch. Rear suspension was damaged. The hand brake was still engaged.

The contact owns a 2010 Mini Cooper. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph when pressure was applied to the brake pedal yet the vehicle would not stop until it crashed into a curb. The police arrived on scene to assist, however a police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to a lot by the contact's insurance company but was not examined for the cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 7,000.

The contact owns a 2003 Mini Cooper. Upon taking the vehicle in for an oil change, it was discovered that the driver side struts needed to be replaced. Approximately four months later, the passenger side strut needed to be replaced. The front and rear brakes were also replaced and the vehicle had an oil pan leak. The driver's and passenger side window motors failed and needed to be replaced. The current mileage was 12,900 and failure mileage was 10,000.
