I own a 2009 Mini cooper and the airbag and seatbelt warning lights come on whenever I get in the car. The light came on recently when I started the car and it now occurs every time I turn the motor on. I've been online researching the problem and discovered that this may mean that the airbags will not deploy if I have an accident. This appears to be a problem facing a number of Mini cooper owners and BMW has not resolved this problem after many complaints.

I was in a bad car accident in which my car was rear ended. I was in the very most right hand lane on the highway, at a stop in stop and go traffic. The vehicle behind me did not stop, hitting me at approximately 75 mph. As a result, my car spun out to the right and hit the guard rail on the side of the highway head on. The car then bounced off of the guard rail, and spun about 180 degrees to the left, where the rear end of the car then hit the same guard rail and finally stopped. When the car crashed into the guard rail head on, the air bag did not deploy and I hit my head and my chest against the steering wheel. I sustained a fracture in my t2 vertebrae and bad chest bruising.

VIN: wmwsv3c56dt395452 airbag system malfunction warning lamp came on android stays on. Vehicle was being driven on interstate when the warning lamp came on. Odometer reading when the warning lamp came on was: 42630 miles. Called Mini charleston of savannah and also Mini customer service and was informed that theory is no recall for this particular VIN despite other VIN's of the same model being affected by an airbag sensor malfunction. Am now faced with the potential for the airbags to inadvertently deploy during normal driving, or the airbags not deploying in the event of a crash.
Tl-the contact owns a 2002 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, while attempting to avoid hitting an animal the steering wheel seized without warning. The seat occupancy sensor malfunctions. The passenger side airbag may not deploy even if the passenger side seat is occupied. The airbag light sometimes stays on, while sometimes goes away. Mini has recalled several cars for seat occupancy sensor mat fault but my car isn't on the list. The light stays on when vehicle is stationary and also while running. I'm unable to use the passenger seat for safety concern. The airbag light goes away on its own as well but turns back on within a few miles.
At any given speed or condition the passenger side airbag warning light illuminates, meaning that the airbag may not deploy in a crash . In some instances the lights will disappear, but at other times the lights are illuminated continuously. It is of great concern that this part has been recalled as a defective part, but because my production date is merely one month off there is no relief . It seems concerning that there may be a number of these unsafe vehicles on the road, but given the delay to include them in the recall, many lives may unknowingly be at risk.
The contact owns a 2007 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that the air bag light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and it was determined that the passenger side air bag may not deploy in case of a crash; however, the technician was unable to provide a reason for the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 73,000.
The passenger side airbag pad component was found to be defective by my service center. The passenger side airbag will not deploy in a crash. It is approximately an $1100 part to replace plus labor. Reports on varied news media have this as a recall. I find no instance of a recall from BMW/Mini.
My vehicle is a 2007 Mini Cooper S. The yellow "passenger airbag off" light on the overhead console is always on. The airbag light and the buckle light are always on. These lights are on regardless whether there is a front passenger. The car was never in any kind of accidents and the airbags were never deployed. I bought the car used in Nov 2013 and the lights came on permanently during early 2015. As I found out recently, a faulty airbag sensor is a very serious safety issue. These days and the past year, without knowing the danger of a faulty airbag sensor, I have been driving my wife and sometime my mother around. I can not imagine involving in an accident with someone sitting on the passenger seat. I hope BMW/Mini can address this issue ASAP.
Air bag warning light and seat occupancy warning light came on. Took in for service- told seat occupany mat (front passenger seat) has failed and must be replaced. Replacement is cost prohibitive ($1700). Safety risk present because air bags may not deploy in event of crash. Dealer says there is no recall and will not replace the part under any extended warranty.

My 2004 Mini Cooper S has a passenger seat belt/air bag light that is illuminated at all times. Originally, it was sporadic, and connecting the seat belt would cause the light to go off. Now it is lit all the time, whether there is a passenger in the seat or not. I was told today that the sensor is bad and will cost $1600 to fix, which includes completely replacing the entire passenger seat. My mechanic says that the air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident. This is most concerning. Obviously, the default should be for the airbag to deploy. What if I am in an accident and my passenger is gravely injured (or killed!)?? unacceptable! I have read that BMW has issued a recall for BMW models with a similar problem. Mini Cooper Should be included in the recall, as they are made by BMW, often using the same parts! where is the oversight?!?.

In an offset frontal accident, both front airbags deployed even with the front passenger seat unoccupied. Based upon information provided about this vehicle, the passenger side air bag should not have deployed. This appears to be a defect related to the operation of the air bag deployment system. The driver of this vehicle suffered a serious second degree burn approximately 2 inches in diameter to the inside of the right wrist. The long sleeve sweater driver was wearing had a large hole burned thru it in the location of the burn to the wrist. This burn was caused by the air bag hot gas discharge. Hands were between the 9 & 10 and 2 & 3 o'clock positions on the steering wheel. Driver was sitting correctly positioned relative to steering wheel and was properly wearing the seat belt.

The contact owns a 2007 Mini Mini Cooper S. The contact was traveling 55 mph when the contact traveled over a slick area in the asphalt. The contact lost control of the vehicle, rolled over and crashed into a ditch upside down. The air bags failed to deploy. The crash caused no injuries and the police were contacted. A police report was filed of the incident. The vehicle was destroyed and the failure was not inspected. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure and current mileages were 74,500.
Both airbag warnig lights come on when someone sits in front pass seat. When the "passenger airbag status lamp" is on that means no one is in the front passenger seat. If someone is sitting in the passenger side front seat while it's on and there is an accident the airbag might not deploy b/c the car thinks someone isn't in the seat.
Srs warning light requiring oc3 mat replacement at only 60k miles. Passenger air bag will not deploy in case of collision. Cost of replacement is quoted as $1374. 83.
Passenger side "air bag" off light is on all of the time and thus, the passenger air bag will not be deployed in an collision. Have had sensor worked on, system flashed by BMW, etc to resolve issue. BMW unable to resolve without extensive cost.
The passenger airbag srs floor mat sensor is damaged and may cause the passenger airbag to not deploy in the case of an accident. The srs airbag light is illuminated.
Restraint system malfunction warning came on while driving. Dealer says clock spring failed cost 1300 to repair not covered under warranty or a recall and the car airbag may not deploy if not repaired. Toyota has recalled my 2005 truck for a similar issue with the air bags is this not a safety issue for BMW / Mini please investigate. Thank you.
Both my passenger airbag warning light and airbag warning lamp in the instrument panel is illuminated deactivating airbag deployment when an adult is sitting in the passenger seat and remains on when passenger seat is vacant while driving. There is also 2 technical service bulletins (TSB) I'm aware of relating to this malfunction: TSB: si m-65-02-06 airbag warning illuminated, fc55 for vehicles produced from August 31, 2005 - April 25, 2006. Nhtsa 10026024 (my vehicle was produced in August 2005 as indicated on my driver door panel). TSB: 720106 airbag warning lamp for oc3 seat mat fault, airbag warning lamp illuminates together with the passenger airbag status lamp. Nhtsa 10019981. I spoke with 2 service managers at Mini indicating faulty detection mat, parts were in stock and will not be covered under warranty for repair or replacement estimated at approximately $1000. 00. My only recourse is to repair it, feeling uncomfortable driving my vehicle or transporting passengers in the event the airbags will not deploy. In addition, BMW of north America, llc extended the warranty on passenger airbag detection mats to 10 yrs/unlimited mileage for specific BMW models ranging from my04 through my06, who owns Mini of north America. I've read several forums relating to this issue, one of which states Mini did extend the warranty on models prior to my05, but problem hasn't been resolved in model years thereafter as mentioned in my complaint and other NHTSA bulletins. I contacted Mini of north America with no positive response.
I have a 2005 Mini Cooper S and the passenger airbag light keeps coming on and after some research on forums see that there is a common problem with this. Turns out the airbag sensor in the passenger seat is a common problem and that dealerships even carry extra parts because of this. I see that something very similar just happened with other BMW's. I think this should be added to the recall list. It appears that in an accident the passenger airbag will not deploy.
The airbag light on the dash and above the windshield for the passenger seat used to go on and off without a passenger in the seat. Starting in 2011, it continues to stay on, meaning the airbag is turned off. The dealership said the airbag sensors were bad and the entire passenger seat needs to be replaced at an estimate of $1,000. The dealership could not confirm that the airbag would or would not deploy if the car faced impact and someone was in the passenger seat. This is a serious safety issue and no fault of the car owner. Please recall this problem before someone gets injured or dies.
Airbag light went on which indicates the airbag is not functioning. Have taken the car to the dealership three times already to have this fixed. Will be taking it in for the fourth time tomorrow. The first time I took it in, they told me they fixed the problem. The second time they told me they had to replace the electrical harness in order to fix the problem. The third time they told me that they had to replace the electrical harness again to fix the problem. I'm curious what they will say this time. Many people have reported the same airbag light problem on the Mini chat rooms. The scary thing is that the dealership told me that when the airbag light comes on, either one or both of my airbags will not deploy if I get into an accident.
