While driving home Thursday night I received left tail light malfunction waring on my dash panel with the turn signal blinking extremely fast. After arriving home I checked the light and found that the tail light inoperative and the turn signals were extremely dim. The next morning I called tucson Mini and told them the problem. The sa stated to bring the car in and they would check out the problem. Upon inspection they found that the l/h tail light ground connector and the bulb connector melted. I ask the sa what would cause this problem and she could not answer this problem. But she did make a comment that she had seen hundreds of these problems. Some which caused enough damage that required the whole tail light to be replaced. She also stated that I was luck that the damage to my car limited to only the ground connector and the light bulb holder. I did some research on the internet and found several instances where the same problem had occurred. In one case the person had to replace both tail lights. I believe this is considered a safety hazard and could possibly cause a fire.

Vehicle was stationary in my driveway, was not started and was unattended, had not been started in over a week and keys were not in the vehicles. The vehicle spontaneously burst into flames which burned the engine bay and front end of the car before the fire dept. Arrived and extinquished the fire with foam. The car had been sitting unstarted for over a week. I am unsure of what caused the fire and because of the extensive damage to the engine bay I could not determine were the fire originated. Perhaps a professional fire examiner could determine that. I am blessed that this did not happen while parked in my garage but was scary. I just want this incident on record so that others which own this particular type of vehicle can be warned about the potential dangers. I have owned this vehicle since new and had a couple of updates done per BMW such as the tailpipes and timing chain in the engine. I was not aware of any additional recalls or updates but apparently there have been some incidences of fires such as mine which I learned about after searching the internet to see if similar issues had been documented. I will attach a few pictures for you to help with your assessment. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope this information will be some help to others in preventing a similar situation. I thank god no one was injured or property damaged other than my car. The fire department made a report but it did not include investigating the cause just a response to a fire.
Electrical control unit went out.

The electric auxiliary water pump failed and caused the circuit board to overheat. If the circuit board were to overheat, it can increase the risk of a fire. Other observation: misfire present at several cylinders. Intake ports carbonized.
My car caught fire while driving. I had been driving for about an hour on the highway. There was no warning. No cel or errors on the dash display. Car was running normally. I noticed some smoke. After pulling to the side of the road flames started coming from under the hood. The car was still running normally. I shut off the motor and got out. Bystanders emptied an extinguisher through the front grille but within minutes the entire vehicle was engulfed. Car was almost completely destroyed. Fire burned through the firewall and consumed the interior.

The car stalled while driving on freeway once and high pressure fuel pump was replaced by Mini cooper and again second time on inner roads driving at 20 miles an hour. . . . Without any warning.
My Mini is only at 133,xxx miles. Around 130,xxx miles it started, I got off work and was going to head home. I tried starting it, it just cranked until I pressed the stop button. About 4 different service icons came across the screen ( red car saying service, car up on a lift, steering wheel with an exclamation point, and a gear cog with an exclamation point). Disconnected the battery for 5 minutes, hooked it back up and it worked fine, or so I thought. It now runs rough, and I have to disconnect the battery about every 5th-6th time I try to go anywhere because it will just do as before and just crank. Have taken it to 3 different shops, all saying the ecu is bad. I can try to have it reprogrammed for $500-$800, however if they are unable to reprogram it, I am left with the only option of spending $1,000 for a nee blank ecu from Mini, which then has to be programmed by Mini for additional $$.
Mini Cooper Seat occupation sensor oc3 is faulty causing airbag not to work properly.
The contact's a 2013 Mini Cooper S hardtop. The contact received recall notification of NHTSA campaign number: 23v337000 (electrical system); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the engine was running rough while in idle position. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle would not exceed 65 mph and 4000 rpms while driving. The message "reduced engine power" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the cylinder 1 was misfiring because it was not receiving communication from the ecu. The vehicle was then taken to another independent mechanic, who advised that the ecu was operating as needed. Additionally, the contact stated that he replaced the spark plugs and the coils on all cylinders; however, the failure persisted. The check engine warning light had been illuminated. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

Takata inflators" I notice a burning smell inside my vehicle which I reported to the dealer. They stated "they couldn't find anything. Then I would depart from my car with the windows up sunroof closed and lock it I would return the windows would be all the way down and top up. This took place again on 3/6/19.
My 2009 Mini Cooper S made rattle noise and the whole timing chain got replaced plus the thermostat house and water pump! the engine light still keeps on after trouble-shooting by my mechanics, which might be the computer issue which has to be figured out soon! the timing chain issue should be under fully-covered by manufacturer since too many Mini cooper owner have the same problem and paid thousand of dollars to fix it! my Mini is only about 55k miles and already has timing chain issue!.
My Mini cooper was parked in my garage for over two weeks. On August 10, 2017 I moved it out of the garage to get to some things in my garage. When I backed it back in, I heard a pop and within minutes I saw smoke coming from the hood. When we were able to open the hood the engine was on fire. We had to call 911 and they told us we could not leave the car in the garage because of the fire incident. We had to figure out how to get the car into neutral so that we could move it out of the garage without starting the car. Once parked on the drive way, my car proceeded to smolder two more times. We disconnected the battery and finally all the smoking stopped. My car has been at the BMW momentum dealership since August 12, 2017 with no resolution on what caused the fire. According to Mini, they were sending a fire specialist to see my car which they said would take some time. My car was finally looked at the first week of October and as of this email, BMW has not informed me as to what caused the fire. This incident is very concerning to me. My three kids were upstairs doing homework when my car caught on fire. Had I not paid attention to the pop I heard and closed the garage door, the car would have been on fire in our attached garage with all of us in the house. This all took place about 8 pm as we were winding down for the day. The outcome of this could have been catastrophic for me and my family. I want resolution to this whole incident which as of today BMW has not given me any indication as to what caused the fire.

Power steering went out without warning, causing loss of control while vehicle was in motion; Mini USA advised it was still driveable, but to be cautious due to lack of control/power steering; when parked, smoke began to plume from under hood where a fire was noticed in back of engine. Called Mini USA back and they advised us to not drive vehicle, as it was a safety hazard. Contacted Mini to set up recalled part (hydraulic power steering), but they were not willing to have car towed to dealer (120 miles from my residence).

Airbag light is showing that passenger airbag is off even though my 100 lbs daughter is sitting in the front seat. I've actually had a 2009 Mini Cooper S, 2011 Mini Cooper S and now my current 2013 Mini john cooper works with the same exact tail light issue. The driver side tail light burnt out in the exact same way on all 3 cars. My vehicle was stationary and in motion when the both issues occurred.
Vehicle had been driven 24 miles and parked for about 10 minutes when engine compartment caught fire. Master mechanic diagnosed it originated with the coolant pump and caused a short circuit with the electronics of the pump igniting a fire.
Known issue with thermostat housing & sensor - Mini has acknowledged a known design issue that causes coolant to leak onto the thermostat sensor. Full replacement is recommended with updated design at customer's cost. Manufacturer should cover this cost since this is an engineering design defect and may lead to potential electrical fires. Affected parts are the thermostat housing, thermostat, thermostat sensor, upper radiator hose & crossover tube. Please refer to manufacturer's communication post: 10049421, 10046779, & 10045301.
I owned a 2011 Mini Cooper S ("Mini") vehicle that caused a fire and injuries at our home. The fire was discovered while the Mini was parked in our garage with the ignition off. The fire destroyed our residence, personal property and two vehicles, including the aforementioned Mini. Fire authorities determined that the fire originated in the Mini's engine compartment and a subsequent investigation yielded that the cause of the fire was an electrical failure to an electrical connection for the circuit board on the auxiliary water pump. The failure ignited nearby combustibles in the engine compartment. The failure was determined to be consistent with that described in NHTSA safety recall campaign 12v-008, which affected 88,911 BMW vehicles. It is unknown why our Mini was not recalled and or included in that campaign. BMW manufactures Minis, as well as other vehicles, and it has been the subject of several recent national media reports involving numerous "unexplained" vehicle fires for which they have not accepted responsibility or provided plausible explanations for. To date, BMW has failed to do either of the latter with regards to our fire. This complaint is being filed for the purpose of enabling the NHTSA to thoroughly investigate this matter in the interest of public safety and in support of its mission of saving lives and preventing additional injuries.
On 2/11/2016 I got home from work and I parked my 2005 Mini Cooper S (53,000 miles) on the driveway, turn off car and stayed with my kids & wife since they were waiting for me outside, my wife notice a sound & smoke coming from the car, the smoke were coming from the engine, I immediately open the hood & there was more smoke coming out, the headlights & all the lights turned on & stared flickering, also the wipers turned on, couple of seconds later the botom of the engine was engulfed in flames. My wife ran to get the water hose & I were able to put the fire out, we were lucky that I didn't walk inside the house like I always do, it could have been a horrible tragedy for me, my family and even our neighbors. The next day I had the car towed to my mechanic who after an inspection found out if was the power steering pump that got on fire and damaged all the wires around it, since he is a Mini specialist he told us about a recall for that specific part, but to our disappointment he ran our VIN # and found that our car is excluded from that recall since its a late 2005 production. That exactly same thing happend to us with the actuators, one day while my wife was shopping with my kids, they just got locked inside the vehicle with the windows rolled up, it was a summer day and luckily she was able to get out through the back trunk, we contacted Mini because there is also a recall for the actuators and they also excluded our car saying that it was a late 2005 production and were not able to get the recall. The way we see it Mini is not taking responsibility for their defective components, it is not fair since I have no way to find out if my car was build with not defective parts, obviously it was. I am terrified by the idea this could have been worst since we r always driving with our kids. U need to do something about this & make Mini liable for these safety issues.

The contact owns a 2010 Mini Cooper S. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle overheated and the temperature gauge warning light illuminated. In addition, smoke and a burning oil odor emitted from under the hood. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. After the vehicle was serviced, the turn signals and windows failed to operate. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but the diagnosis was unavailable. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,568.

Engine cranked but did not start. Aaa flatbed to Mini of allentown. Received call from dealer possible water damage to electrical, continuing diagnosis. Vehicle frm failure.
Frontal air bag lights stay on.
Steering fluid continuously leaks - replace hydraulic hose twice - known defect - Mini refused to fix for free engine cooling - fan runs after shutoff continuously - known defect - Mini refused to fix for free electrical - doors, windows, sunroof fire off on their own while car is moving and when is parked. Will do this at highway speed or when sitting outside (rain or shine) - car unlocks itself and windows all open up -known defect - kind of distracting at highway speed -Mini refused to fix for free. Dealers will not fix these issues unless you make them recall vehicles with multiple small problems ( not just one big problem) - this model has 73 tsbs that dealers charge you to fix even though the problems are known and dangerous issues. In my mind, many small problems can be more dangerous than a few big ones - steering, door locks, cooling - not good. This is an old car but these problems are old too - known tsbs should not be subject to warranty time frames, they are still dangerous after the warranty expires. When these cars are routinely serviced, these known/dangerous issues need to be corrected or the cars should be taken off the road. I used the date of the last incident, not the first one. Thank you.
Airbag passenger seat sensor is bad $1500 to repair and no guarantee it will work correctly in the future. Why hasn't this been recalled??? BMW who owns Mini cooper recalled this sensor for their cars but why not the coopers? I'm so angry that they could care less about my families safety. Automobiles are required to have airbag systems but they aren't required to work properly??.
Air bag light turned on. Performed a fault survey and found there is 1 related fault code in the mrs control unit. Passenger seat occupancy sensor, not currently present, occurred 12 times. Need to replace the seat occupancy sensor and re program the mrs control unit. Total replacement cost: $1,164. 47 called Mini headquarters and was told there was no warranty or recall for my specific car. However, they told me that the 2005, 2006 Mini cooper had a recall for the seat sensor. This is a major problem and should be recalled for the 2007 model as well.
Power steering system fire.
Merging onto interstate I accelerated and suddenly lost power. Engine was running but I could not get any speed. Eml message lit up on dash. This was very dangerous situation, losing power as I merged with traffic that was going at highway speed. I managed to limp to side of the road. Shutting off car and restarting reset something and eml message disappeared and engine operated normally. Googling problem showed my experience was not unique and that could expect it to occur again. And it seems dealer can only diagnose source of problem if error message is on.
The contact owns a 2004 Mini Cooper S. The contact noticed that the vehicle's air bag warning indicator was constantly illuminated and both front windows hesitated to roll up and down. Also, the air bag indicator would illuminate when the front seat belts were buckled or unbuckled. The dealer stated that there was a positive cable in the fuse box that malfunctioned. The contact was informed that the failure could destroy the electrical system, cause a fire, and keep the air bag from deploying in a crash. The seat belt buckles were repaired, but the failure recurred. The dealer also discovered that the cable was being stretched and the center switch pack case was separated, which could cause the windows to detach from the vehicle while driving high speeds. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 124,500.
