I have a mitisubishi Eclipse 2003 100000 miles ( majority highway). In the spring of 08-the vehicle was making noise when accelerating, the vehicle was changing gears hard and was advise it was the transmission/motor mounds. The problem occurred intermittently while driving as much as 40mph. Took it back to mitisubishi dealer for service/diagnosis-told possible eventually trans, timing belt and possibly radiator, which was one of another consumers resolve. Well, they flush the radiator and it resolve the problem of driving but not the noise. Also June 2009-after driving 5 mph I noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment, the consumer pulled over ( call for tow and later opened the hood to see all the insulation smolder). After being stranded for over an hour I was towed to my destination. The car was later towed to contractor advise possible distributor, realized it was not the distributor and suggest car is towed to mitsubish for official computer service diagnosis ( due to car starting but not turning over). Advise, by the mitisubishi service tech all of the electrical wires were melted. . . Computer failure/extreme electrical system damage, harness melted etc; I ask the dealer service manager @ the dealership, what would cause this and had this happen before? he stated ?not sure of cause?and was really shocked to the damage "possible fuse, ignition wires something" not sure. Diagnostic testing cost $112. 00 repair estimate $5400. Help!!!I the manufacture needs to be made aware of this hazard of a problem; if not already. With recall/replacement and/or reimburse good faith and loyal Mitsubishi consumers. I won't began to explain the numerous brake/rotors & tires replaced/repaired within 5 years of purchased in September 2002.

Squealing belts at startup, inconsistent small leaks of coolant, hesitation at 2k rpm were only pre-cursors. Out of nowhere, while driving on highway, I looked at gauges for no particular reason. . . . Noticed the temperature was rising, eventually going as far as it could above h. So I look for smoke in rear view. . . . Nothing. I turn down the radio to listen for noises. . . . . . Nothing. Everything seems fine. Hoping that air through the radiator would cool the engine. . . . . . Not working. I decided I better pull over. . . . . The second I safely stopped, huge puffs of white smoke billowed out the hood edges. I jumped out, opened the hood. . . . . . Huge clouds of smoke and smell of burning rubber, I thought the car was on fire. Once the smoke settled, oil could be seen splattered all over the engine. Tow truck comes and while putting on flatbed. . . . . Oil drained out like a water faucet. Found out later from the dealer that oil line burst, causing the head gaskets to blow and most likely damaged totaled the engine. New engine quoted at $5000, used 71,000 mile engine in some salvage yard in alabama quoted at $2-3000. Nice chunk of money and the engine still needs to be shipped and installed. What a deal? I actually spoke highly about Mitsubishi's in the past, but now I'm having second thoughts. Too bad Mitsubishi company has such a bad history of failures, recalls, and poor repair service. I was actually thinking of buying a 2006 Eclipse. . . . . . . . Not any more. I'll miss my 97 Eclipse. . . . . . It was pretty good to me, but this recent event with no warning, did me in and it is just wrong that I have read similar incidents on the internet and Mitsubishi does nothing. Time for an american car. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Too bad we don't have the sense to make oil and gas-free vehicles though. . . . . . . The technology is there. Oh well. . . . . . I guess I better start figuring out how I am going to get to work on Monday.

While driving at any speed vehicle stalled. Without warning. Driver was not able to restart vehicle, and it was towed to a dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the radiator cap needed to be replaced.
40000 or more need a new head gastic and thats taking the engine apart, had a leak wasn't value gasitic and turned out to be head gasitic, when you drive car a 100 miles or so it loses oil, and loose about half a court of oil and burning smell, if you don't replace will loose more oil.

When I first purchased this vehicle from the dealer 6/2001 I had to take it back 2 times due to the defect of the hose hooked to the radiator, they repaired it under warrany, and now it has occurred again which all Mitsubishi dealers tell me because it is not under warranty and not on the recall list there is nothing they can do. I just got done putting brand new sway bar links on the car, and paid 350. 00 to do this in which they told me should never occurred on this new of a car. I feel since I reported the problems with the noise from the first week I got the car all the way until recent when I fixed it, they overlooked it and ignored the problem which could have cost me and my son our lives. I feel Mitsubishi should cover these things since there is proof I took it in over 13 times for the same complaint noise under the car (sway bar links) and radiator fluid leaking all over the engine and burning. Please note this has been occuring since 7/2001 the month and year I have marked below are for the defective hoses on my radiator causing fluid to leak all over the engine and burn and this was verified on this date below by a professional shop. This has not caught fire yet but smoke comes from under the hood of the car all the time after it has been running.

I was sold this car as a Mitsubishi, it has a Chrysler engine one step up from a neon. If I would have wanted a neon by Chrysler I would have purchased 2 for the price I paid for my Eclipse. The lower bearings went out. I have extended warranty. At 68,000 miles the radiator cracked, computer and alternater went out causing my car to overheat immediately and the engine wouldn't restart until it had cooled. Was hard to restart. It had slick 50 treatments 4 times during its life. It also has had 3 faulty clutches.
About a week after purchasing the car, it sat for 3 days while I was away on navy business. When I returned, I had to sit in heavy traffic. I noticed the engine temp gauge was full hot. I finally got to a road to let the engine breath, and the gauge didn't go down. I took the car to kelly Mitsubishi the next day and told them what happen. I also told them that the heater didn't put out hot air. They replaced the thermostat and everything was fine. No problems since then.
At high velocity rock went through the air opening, hit the radiator, broke it, causing fluid to leak and making the vehicle to stall out. There was no warning of this defect.
