2006 Mitsubishi Galant, 109,777 miles: driving home through the middle of the sonoran desert in southern arizona at 11:30pm my Galant electrically died. My alternator, battery, engine control module, electric distribution module, passenger side air bag, head lights, radio all went dead. Dealer found three power cables to the airbag system that run under the carpet on passenger side of the transmission hump had shorted out because three protrusions on a body weld worked through the insulation and shorted all power to ground. If this happened on the center lane on the freeway at rush hour I could have been killed possibly along with other drivers.

I purchased a 2000 Mitsubishi Galant brand new in June, 2000. About 18 months later, my car would immediately stop running. All systems would die. My Mitsubishi dealership attempted different fixes on many occasions, only to have the problem occur again. Finally, my car was sent to a master mechanic at another dealership who diagnosed the problem as something to do with an electrical regulator or switch. To my recollection, the switch could only carry a 10 amp load, and was getting shorted out because it needed more capacity. The previous work at the other dealership did not fix the problem, although the resetting of the system made the car able to function again until another occurrence. The master mechanic at the dealership installed a 50 amp switch and mentioned that it was way more than I would ever need in this car. My car has operated for over 4 years without incident. Yesterday, a small fire started on the piece that I believe may have been part of the fix. While I'm unsure how related these incidents are, I am concerned about other Galants on the road.

Alternator and wire harness caught on fire on my 1999 Mitsubishi Galant. Harness and alternator plug were totally burnt. Had to replace both at my cost. Also had to replace radiator while at the shop. Lost 1 day of work due to this.

Lights dim very frequently at night. The alternator was replaced. Problem is still present. Taken to be fixed 3 times, could not be fixed. This was reported to dealer within a month of purchase of the vehicle. They have done nothing. Mitsubishi has been notified and are currently looking into the problem. The cause is still unknown.
