Underhood Wiring Problems of Mitsubishi Galant

My car would not start at all. After it being towed to a garage, they diagnosed the problem to be the electrical wiring harness. It was chafing against the engine and causing a short. When they replaced all the fuses the car sparked and smelled of smoke with small flames by the fuse box. The mechanic ended having to replace the harness. But said that this maybe a universal problem as my car is only a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant. Of course it has 72,000 miles so it is out of warranty.

Responded to a vehicle fire in a 2002 Mitsubishi, Galant on March 22, 2007. There is no possible cause of this fire but from the outstanding recall for the wiring under the hood, recall number NHTSA 02v147000. It had not been driven for three hours and the area of origin, is under the hood involving the battery and wiring.

: the contact stated the vehicle' s tail light and turn signal stopped operating. These failures were not included in the recall for the electrical system (02v147000). The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The contact was using deductive reasoning to assume the problems with the vehicle must have an electrical issue. Updated 10/3/2006 - the consumer was able to determine that eh problem was not with the bulbs or fuses. The replacement fuses would blow immediately. Updated 12/15/2006 - recall 02v147000: wiring harness abrasion indicated that on certain passenger vehicles, the routing of the vehicle's front wiring harness could allow it to come in contact with a rough edge, causing abrasion.

The contact states there is an NHTSA recall campaign 02v147000 concerning the electrical system. This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall. This vehicle is not included in the recall due to VIN.

The flashers of my 2002 Mitsubishi Galant fail to work. I have changed out the fuse several times only for the flashers to fail in less than a month. The problem in itself is not absolute. I have ran over a rough area on the road and the flashers have started working again, but only for one week. I called Mitsubishi (800-222-0037) on 8 Aug 2005 @1:30pm at which time I gave them my name, address, telephone number and VIN(4a3aa46h32e005167). I was informed that there is no recall in their data base for this particular problem. I found information on the NHTSA site (recall 02v147000) at which time I called to get more information and was advised to submit a complaint.

Consumer drove vehicle to work and parked. Approximately 1 hour later vehicle caught on fire. Fire dept advised consumer that fire was electrical in origin.

While driving 45-50 mph smelled smoke. Consumer applied brakes, and they faded. Transmission slipped. Consumer pulled over, and front of vehicle burst into flames. Fire department put out fire, vehicle was towed to dealer. Factory representative determined Mitsubishi was not responsible. There was recall000295001 on power steering tube that could cause a fire, but this vehicle was not affected. Vehicle was totalled, no injuries.

While traveling approximately 45 to 50 mph smoke started coming from front end of vehicle. Upon examination by dealership wiring harness and computer system had burned up. No determination was made as to the cause of problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.

While driving, smoke started coming from under the dash, and eventually the vehicle caught on fire, there was one injury. (claim#04-1292-070).

Consumer was traveling about 45mph on highway and without prior notice smoke was inside of vehicle. He managed to run out of vehicle and it went up in smoke. Fire department was called out. Vehicle has been totaled.

Consumer was driving down road when a fire ignitied in engine. Consumer applied brakes , but they were inoperative. Had to pull emergency brake which caused loss of control ,vehicle spun around before it stopped. Consumer jumped out . Wiring and wheel covers, basically everthing was melted. The cause for the fire could not be found. However, the consumer firmly believes that something was not installed correctly at factory that caused the five month old vehicle to burn.

Consumer went to start the vehicle and noticed smoke, there was an electrical fire and damage to the interior of the vehicle, engine fire in the wiring harness area, claim 42-1246-839.

Components replaced as per recalls, strong smell of burning plastic after leaving dealer, no visble smoke or fire. Returned to dealer, service dept could not find source.

While driving at approximately. 50 mph driver noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood,. Attempted to pull over, but brakes were inoperative. Driver had to pump brakes in order to slow down and stop. Driver got out of vehicle and noticed flames coming from underneath vehicle, burning grass surrounding the area, and destroying/ melting all wiring, and all of front end. Vehicle was a total loss.
