Electrical System Problems of Mitsubishi Galant - part 1

Check engine light suddenly came on and the vehicle lost all engine power and driving capabilities while driving at a low speed, turning a corner. There had been no other issues or indication of a failure of any kind. The car was pulled over on the roadside out of traffic and was able to be restarted with no problem. It was taken to a nearby auto parts store where they performed a free diagnostic check. The result that came back was generally regarding a vacuum issue in fuel system or lines. The gas cap lid and door were checked for proper closure and it was established they had been closed and sealed properly at the time the engine power failure occurred.

The driver window is breaking without cause. Has happened on more than one occasion. Did not take picture. But insurance fixed the most recent shattering incident--so if picture needed can obtain in the future. Once occurrence the vehicle was not in motion. Another occurrence the vehicle was in motion.

The contact discovered that the passenger side brake light wire had melted. The wire harness was replaced and the failure was remedied. Approximately 8 months later the drivers side rear brake light would not operate. The contact discovered that the driver side brake light wire harness had also melted. I have trouble with starting the car repetitive issue needs a recall, the steering wheel needs a recall. The electric windows dont work properly need a recall. Paint job is very faded and should have been recalled as well. I dont understand why there's not already recalls for these safety issues. Please help.

I started my car in the afternoon, then I turned on my radio 3 minutes later. Then, I smelled like something burnt, that's when I saw smoke came out of the front right passenger seat door. I stopped in a random tire shop to see what was going on. A few minutes later, I saw fire coming out of the loudspeaker on the front right door. A guy from the tire shop helped me to extinguish the fire. After I made sure that it was safe enough for me to drive, I drove my car to my regular auto shop to get it checked. The inside of the door was melted (halfway melted, because the fire was handled early) and blew the fuse.

Mitsubishi updates their maps for the Galant every 1. 5 years, however the maps used to update are old maps. For example, the April 2013 version has maps from 2011.

The fire department was notified of the failure. The contact separated the passenger door panel and poured water in the panel to stop the fire. Turned heat on and heard a ratteling noise under dash, when heat came on noise stopped. Turned heat on a week later, nothing, only cold air. Independent mechanic says heater core, after replacing thermostat and coolant sensor. Dealership says heater control valve, either way, with seeing how many people are complaining about the same thing, there is clearly a problem at the manufacturing level. Maybe Mitsubishi should look at doing something like accepting full responsibility and repairing these cars. With the economy what it is there are few people who are able to afford this expense, myself included. Somebody please help us! why should the consumer always get the short end of the stick?.

Lamp sockets for both left and right side brake lights burnt out at 5 years, 2 months with less than 50,000 miles. If one side went out I'd call it a manufacturer defect. Both sides,. . . Seems more like an engineering problem. Only the contact for the brake side of the 2057 lamp was melted and recessed. The tail lamp side of the socket is still clean. Put in a gm replacement socket which looks better made than the oem. Just glad the wife did not get rear-ended. Hung onto the old sockets just in case someone might be interested in looking at them. Lots of tailgaters in my state, so brake lights are important here.

Heat stopped working due to a faulty heat control valve. First it started making a clicking noise and now I have no heat at all.

Matching recall Mitsubishi notice sr-99-003 and NHTSA 99v305001, our Galant has the busted turn signal problem. Mitsubishi claims our VIN is outside the range of defective units. Obviously, that's not the case, but they're not paying.

1. Purchased "as is" in daylight hours, did not notice interior lights did not function. 2. Interior lights and trunk light do not function. This is a permanent condition. 3. Using ohmmeter, interior light filaments checked, trunk light filament checked. All ok. No voltages measured at inputs to all. Fuses all ok. Door switch ok. Lifted fuses 16 & 17 in engine compartment, no voltage to contacts that should have 12 volts always on, per schematic. Looked up recall # 29924 for this model, year, make, and would appear to be under color of grounding of wires.

Began having trouble with both rear windows. The windows would intermittently become unresponsive to controls both at the driver seat and the controls on the doors. Brought the car in before the warranty expired (4 yrs, 8 mos) to get windows repaired, dealer could not duplicate the errors and did not do any service on the car. Six months later (after warranty expired), the rear, passenger side power window went completely down on its own (I had not touched window controls). While I was driving my car and would not go back up. Independent garage had to remove door panel and sever the controls in order to get the window up; then had to wedge the window with a block to keep it up until parts could be ordered. If any pets or children had been in the car when the window first went down, they could have easily gone out the window.

Electrical - I have replaced my right brake light about 20 times before I was informed it was an electrical issue. I purchased a new socket the light work for 2 weeks and now its off again. Unknown - everytime it rains hard my front passenger floods with a pool of water. This is the second time this has happened now my car smell like mold. The dealer told me there were leaves clogging the hose, out of everyone I know with a car this has never happened to them. I can't wait to trade this car in. I will never ever get a mitsu and I will stop anyone I know from purchasing one.

The problem started about a year ago. The constant rattling sound behind the dashboard when you first turn on the heat. After about 10-15 secs it stops. Then eventually the rattling sound stops completely when you turn on the heat and so does the heat and the defroster. I lost heat the first time back around December of 2008. It came back on within two weeks and stayed on during the winter. Around the first of may, I lost heat again and it has not been back on since.

Son was driving home from college and the passenger side door caught on fire as he was leaving the parking lot. He immediately pulled over and put out the fire burning the tips of his fingers.

Recently purchased used 200 Mitsubishi Galant. Having issues with the oil light constantly coming on and the car shutting off. It also seems as though the vehicle looses power and none of the signal lights or hazard lights will work. This has been going on since purchasing the vehicle in October 2008. The dealer where purchased is not being very cooperative. Once off its takes several tries for the car to start again. Your website indicated that several of these models were recalled. It looks as though this vehicle was never repaired.

The contact owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant. When the contact attempted to roll down the two front windows, smoke poured out from the front passenger side window. He turned off the vehicle and noticed that a fire erupted in the front passenger side door panel. He personally extinguished the fire with water. After the incident, he noticed that the switch plate was melted and the sunroof, radio, and power window devices were inoperative. The contact has pictures of the vehicle after the failure. He is in the process of having a technician inspect the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 91,000.

The contact owns a 2006 Mitsubishi Galant. While starting the vehicle, the key shattered into six pieces. The contact had to use the spare key to start the vehicle. Later the spare key shattered as well. The contact was able to piece the key together but every time he started the vehicle, the failure occurred again. The keys had not been replaced. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000 and the current mileage was approximately 102,000.

2006 Mitsubishi Galant both keys used to start my vehicle have shattered into several pieces while attempting to start the vehicle. The first key broke around July 14 2007 and the second key breaking more recent on 25 november2010. When the keys break they go into several smaller pieces and almost impossible to find all the parts and pieces creating a choking hazard for both children and animals. If needed I can provide pictures. When this second key broke into 7 pieces I was not able to locate all pieces. Approximately 24-48 hours later I observed, by way of passing the plastic piece, that my young puppy had located the piece and swallowed the plastic. I fear that if this would have been my child that found the piece that I would have a larger problem to take care of. I contacted Mitsubishi about this problem and they stated that since my vehicle was not still under warranty that they would not help me and that I needed to purchase a new key that was made of better material. The cost to replace one key is $200. Mitsubishi advised that they were not responsible to fix the problem, even if it did cause a choking hazard, since my vehicle is not under warranty and that if my child or puppy choked on the piece that I should have watched them better than what I did.

I have 2 complaints. I have a 2002 black Mitsubishi Galant ES and like many others I see on the road and have read about on the internet. Oxydization has occurred all over my car, it started about 2 years ago and buffing and waxing does not help. Also, another problem that started about 2 years ago: when turning from air to heat or vice versa, there is a loud clicking noise and then it will turn over when it feels like. I think recently it has just given out and completely broke. I just paid this car off and am embarrassed to drive it.

: the contact stated, on two separate occasions there have been multiple times the abs/tcl (traction control) has disengaged without warning. Each occurrence was at different speeds. The dealer's service technicians have inspected the vehicle on several occasions. Updated 8/9/2006 - the traction control light disengages while at speed with or without cruise control on, the consumer feels that the abs system is also at question. The dealer inspected the vehicle and did a diagnostic check. There were no signs of corrosion, dtc's and all pcm's were ok. The passenger rear door makes noise when opening.

The contact stated car has been stalling for several years. When she took vehicle to the dealer, they told her the problem emerged because of low maintenance on the car. She tool vehicle for service, but not to the dealer because it was too expensive. Since 3-2003 water leaked into the car. Water build up inside of the car from the air conditioner. Also, had electrical problems. When the water accumulated in the car it will lock on its own. The air conditioner will not come on sometimes. There was mold in the car because of the water. The car seat was soaked from the water. On 9-3-05, after taking the car to the dealership, she picked it up and the water built up in the car again.

2002 Mitsubishi Galant passenger side door caught on fire locking the windows and doors. When the fire erupted it burned the right leg of the passenger. The passenger also sprained her right ankle trying to break out the window.

While driving 60 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from under the hood and then the engine commenced to make a popping noise. Vehicle was pulled off the freeway, and then pulled to consumer's home. Consumer stated one of the spark plugs blew out. Dealer and the manufacturer were not notified.

2001mitsubishi Galant ES, I want to drive a safe car with no fire or accidents,I found 7 recalls for this year and make I went to the Mitsubishi at 34-54 44th. Street long island city 718-361-6900 service advisor anthony serrone told me that there was no recall for my car and I made an appointment for 01/04/09 at 8:00 am to inspect my car for danger signs check engine light stays on all the time, I was told I need idle control module to be installed and noise from the bottom and braking makes rough sound and the smell of fuel in the car and feel heat from the bottom of the car.
