1 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

Every 100 miles car start burning oil to fast. . Engine start running slow. . Check engine light start blinking on and off.

2 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2017

Takata recall engine was remanufactured April 4th, 2012. Engine burning oil, more then likely catayltic converter, throwing codes. Cost around 5,000. Engine having symptoms. . . Again, for the same thing. Nissan offered to diagnose for free, but states the warranty period is over. Also found that the engine was used, by source other then the dealership. Would like someone to honor this recall, as in 2012 it should have been replaced for free upon recall. Is there anything anyone can do to help the situation? car began shaking, and losing power, on the road, had the car towed home. 25,000 miles on the reconditioned engine, oil blowing, 4 quarts in 3 miles.

3 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Everything I have had to replace/repair on this car is linked to recalls, but Nissan is denying this & refusing to help. They said my vehicle was not part of any recalls but everything that's failing is related. It has died on me in the middle of highway traffic w/ my child in the car several times. This car is defective & no one from Nissan is concerned!!!! butterfly screw/valve issues, cam/crank shaft issues--related to engine cooling, high oil consumption; alternator failing; oil leaking.

4 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

I am a collage student and I bought a 2003 Nissan Altima I always like this car but I got a shock in my life the first week to school I saw the engine light blinking when I check there is no oil I odd 3 quart and it fill to the h level the next week it went to below low level I only got this car 3 weeks only and I almost used one gal oil can any one do any thing about the problem the car do not smoke it just burn the oil.

5 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2013

While my son was driving, the engine began missing and started to smoke. At the same time the heater quit producing heat. The check engine light came on. Engine diagnostics indicated cylinder # 4 misfire. Took to independent mechanic where it was confirmed that the engine was destroyed by failed catalyst in the pre- catalyst. Oil had fouled the missing cylinder's spark plug. The engine oil level was full and there had no previous indication of oil consumption, but the oil was found to contain coolant. These cars are popular for parents to purchase for teenagers and appear to be hazardous. Nhtsa campaign id number: 03v084000 indicated that this pre-catalyst issue was a fire hazard back in 2003. It appears whatever was done in this recall did not solve the problem. This failure seems to be fairly common occurrence.

6 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

Catalytic converter broke down and particals caused internal wear to the motor. That causes the motor to burn oil.

7 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2012

Recently the engine blew on my Altima. It had been function properly and received regular maintenance since its purchase date roughly 6 months ago with about 74,000 miles. The catalytic converter failed and overheated at around 78,000 miles. Currently it is burning through about 3 liters of oil a week. Because of the damage caused by catalytic converter, the engine is no longer serviceable.

8 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2012

Suddenly starting using 1 qt. Oil every 600 miles. No leaks, no smoke, no check engine light ever came on. Took it to my local Nissan dealership. They said oil consumption was from catalytic converter breaking down and getting sucked into engine absorbing the oil and scoring lower engine (cylinder block walls), thus causing oil blow by. They recommend catalytic converter and engine replacement at $5,000 dollars. There is a history of these converter failures from 2002 in Nissan products. My local dealer said my vehicle wasn't on recall. The biggest concern in this matter was that check engine light never came on and had I'd gone another 1000 miles this car could have seized up on the interstate.

9 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/09/2012

I bought Nissan Altima 2003 on August 20 2012. I drove it around 800 miles and did oil change at lube express they changed oil at 67290 miles, after driving for around 200 miles car was making wiered noice from engine. I got help of a local mechanic, he confirmed that there was no engine oil in the car !!! he put full 5 quart engine oil. I again got it inspected at lube express, they also confirmed there was no leakage. The third refill does not last for long. After 3 days again 5 quart engine oil was disappeared from engine. I again got it inspected at Nissan dealership on 10/09/2012 they also confirmed that there was no oil leaks and they did burning oil consumption test, again there was no engine oil in the car. They had suggested me to change entire engine!!!. I can not drive car at all. The engine may caught fire !!! I surfed lot of websites and found that in Nissan Altima 2003, lots of people have experienced the problem and it had occured after 60,000 miles I. E. After warranty expires and same happened with me as well. I complained at Nissan but they replied that they can not do anything since warranty expires. Problem in Altima occures after original warranty expires!!!! Nissan is selling cars which can cause serious accidents and I want to stop this. Problem in engine occures after warranty expires. Please help since this may case loss of life and serious accidents. Nissan can not escape from its social responsibility since they are selling junk cars to americans. I can provide lot of website and blogs to prove that Nissan sold 2003-altima with faulty engines. They must recall Altima 2. 5l - 2003 and they must find amicable solution for this problem. I know that I am at a big loss but my effort will help to save lot of lives who are driving Nissan cars on highways with huge risk. I trust in god and law of the united states of America. Thanks, kalpit.

10 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2012

My car began to shake uncontrollably and my check engine light started to flash. I've brought it into a shop 3x now and they can't seem to find the problem so my car has been sitting in my driveway since the incident. My oil is burning at an extreme rate. I only drive max. Maybe 20 miles in 2 days and keep having to put 2qts. Of oil in my car. It's smoking really bad too. I keep paying for labor when the problem hasn't been solved. I found the following on Nissanhelp. Com: ntb03-070c safety recall campaign -revised- 2002-2003 Nissan Altima, 2002-2004 sentra; voluntary recall campaign engine exhaust pipe hanger pin and pre-catalyst for 2002-2003 model year Altimas and 2002-2004 model year sentras, there is a possibility that certain engine operating conditions may cause damage to the pre-catalyst. Material from inside a damaged pre-catalyst could enter the engine and result in increased oil consumption. If the engine oil level is not checked on a periodic basis and drops below the low level, and the driver continues to operate the vehicle ignoring noticeable engine noise, engine damage may occur which could result in a fire. I don't know what to do. I keep paying money, but no one seems to fix the problem and I need a car.

11 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

Due to faulty cat converter which Nissan failed to replace the engine is burning oil excessively due to debris from cat converter going inside the engine. Roughly at around 100k miles car needs new cat converters and new engine block. This issue is very famous among 2002-2006 Altimas and Nissan is well aware of this. The oil indicator fails to inform the driver of pretty much zero oil in engine and this creates a catastrophic damage to engine which can result in fire.

12 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

The car would intermittently stall and sometimes would lurch when driving. We replaced spark plugs and a coils, but periodically the check engine light would still come on. I was driving around town and was stopped at a stop light. As I took off from the light, the car stalled and suddenly stopped. I tried to restart the vehicle, the engine revved and smoke filled the interior of the vehicle and a strong burning oil/gas smell. I then had to have the car towed as it would not turn over. The person behind me nearly ran into me since the car stopped so suddenly. The mechanic replaced the crank position sensor and the pre catalyst and catalytic converters. It was discovered at that time that the vehicle had used about 2. 5 qts of oil and no oil light came on. Today, I drove the car for the 2nd time since the repair and it is losing power and lurching while on the highway. There is a ticking noise in the engine, and the car shudders like it is going to stall. It is being brought back to the mechanic today. The engine light started flashing and then turned solid. Clouds of smoke began coming out of the exhaust. I'm afraid that the car will turn off while I'm driving on the highway and cause a crash. This problem has been ongoing for 2 years (begain around 65,000 miles) and occurs at various speeds from stopped to 65mph.

13 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5. While the contact was driving, the oil light illuminated. The contact stated that the oil had been changed 2,000 miles prior to the light. The vehicle was taken to get another oil change but the failure continued. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and a local repair shop but the failure could not be diagnosed; the mechanics stated that the problem was most likely oil consumption. The failure mileage was approximately 64,000.

14 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

Nissan Altima 2003 - excessive oil consumption. This issue is a known defective that thousands of Nissan owners have experienced, as a result of a faulty pre-cat that shreds into small pieces and then gets stuck in the engine, damaging it. I have always taken care of my car, and am now forced to add oil once a week or else risk the engine blowing.

15 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2009

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5 sl, in approximately 2008 February, my car stopped on me while driving on the freeway. It turns out that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. Had the work done at buena park Nissan then I realized that the car had also starting burning excessive oil. I was told there was an oil pan leak, had that work done at another dealership. Approximately 9 months later, the car stopped again, had the car diagnosed at the Nissan dealer ship in antioch, CA, was advised that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, again. At this point, I was frustrated with the car and I contacted Nissan of north american, and the dealership in buena park who both denied me any help. I was given a reference number of 6594593 when I called for a solution in 2009. Now, 8/2010, I am having acceleration issues again, my check engine light is on, my antifreeze is evaporation along with the engine oil every 300 miles. I called Nissan north America again today and spoke with lisa byrne at extension 41661 who told me there was nothing Nissan would do at this point because my previous claim had already been denied. I am replacing oil on a weekly basis as well as the antifreeze. I called Nissan again today, ref # [xxx]. I asked her who could I contact other than the regional office and she stated no one and that there was nothing Nissan was going to do to right my situation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2009

1. A bolt falls out of the middle of the engine. Causes greater oil consumption and in time cause catastrophic engine failure. 2. How often? don't know, checking the internet it was easy to find. 3. Replaced the engine, amazing for an engine with 55,000 miles.

17 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2009

Vehicle stalling while driving, burning oil quickly doing oil changes every month, Nissan service station said catalytic coverter. Car still making noise other complaints that this is a normal problem then engine blows due to debris from converter getting into engine. This should be a recall.

18 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

2003 Nissan Altima has had multiple problems with the engine. The consumer was informed, the cylinder 1 misfired which caused the engine light to illuminate. There was a problem with the head gasket consuming 3 quarts of oil every 4000 miles and running terribly rough. The consumer believed her vehicle was among the hundreds of vehicles having problems with the pre-catalytic converter where it deteriorates and becomes sucked into the engine, scorching the cylinders causing massive oil consumption then followed by the engine running rough.

19 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2008

I bought a 2003 Nissan Altima with 66k miles on it 6 months ago from wilsonville Nissan. They promised this car was in perfect running order, even after the check engine light came on during the test drive, but the technicians there insisted that they just forgot to reset the computer after they performed an oil change. As I have come to find out, ses lights do not illuminate on Altimas for this reason, but after I bought the vehicle and multiple problems arose, we ran diagnostics and cylinder 1 was misfiring. There are many more issues with this vehicle now, including problems with the head gasket, consuming 3 quarts of oil every 400 miles, and running terribly rough. There hundreds of thousands of people complaining of these same pre-cat related issues in their 02-06 Altimas. The precat deteriorates and is sucked up into the engine, scorching the cylinders, causing massive oil consumption, and then followed by the engine running rough and then dying. We took the vehicle back to wilsonville Nissan and they refused to give the precat a visual inspection. They claimed that since the computer did not throw a code concerning the precat, they had no reason to look at it. Instead, they charged us $110 to tell us that the computer was giving a cylinder 1 misfire code. We already knew that and we told them that before they took the car in. Under the federal emissions warranty, Nissan has to pay for all costs to diagnose, repair, and replace all parts that are ruined by any faulty emissions part under 80,000 miles. The precat falls under this category, and the engine should also be replaced by Nissan as its problems are a direct result from the precat falling apart and getting sucked into the engine. Recall id# 5450 requires them to test and look at the pre-cat, and if there is any damage to the cat, then the engine must be replaced, free of charge. Nissan will not cooperate and will not even look at the precat. Please help.

20 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2008

I have had many problems with my 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5s. Currently excessive oil consumption code p0422 - replaced catalytic converter and pre-cat.

21 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the vehicle burns oil. The vehicle had just undergone an oil change and all of the oil has suddenly left out of the engine. She took the vehicle to a mechanic, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. She is concerned that the vehicle could ignite into flames due to the burning oil. The current mileage was 129,000 and failure mileage was 100,000.

22 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2006

: the contact stated a quart of oil needed to be added to the engine every week. Once the oil runs low there is a shaking noise until more is added. Upon inspection the dealership determined although there is no leak, the engine needed to be over-hauled because it burns excessive oil. Updated 7/3/2006 - although it was clear that eh vehicle used excessive amounts of oil the dealer refused to overhaul the engine free of charge because the vehicle was no longer under warranty.

23 Engine Burning Oil problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Excessive oil consumption. I have a Nissan Altima with the 3. 5 v6, there was a recall on the catalytic converter that when on the 03 Altimas the engine would leak oil past the rings and damage the cat that would destroy the cat and then let the material go back into the motor and cause oil consumption. My car after telling the dealer last year, still uses a quart every week (roughly every 600 miles). The dealer told me that Nissan consider this normal usage. I have tried over several times to get this matter resolved. All dealers and Nissan would say, you are pass your power train warranty. Now I see Nissan has a campaign out about the 06 alimtas. Why not extend the warranty on all Altima.
