7 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

I drove my car from ms to GA. When I reached my hotel and turned my car off and tried to leave again the service engine light came on and the car would not start. I had the light checked the next the and it came back reading the crank position sensor. When I made it back to ms I got the part replaced and the check engine light was turned off. 8 months later my car started cutting off at red lights and not starting again. The check engine light came back on. When I had it checked again the mechanic said it was reading for the crank position sensor again. Once I explained to him that I just had that fixed he figured it was something else. Replaced my battery, battery cables, alternator, and starter. Cars still shuts off and wont crank. When I called Nissan they said my VIN wasnt included in the recall. My car stalls on me daily and shuts off at red lights.

8 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2012

My camshaft position sensor, bank 1, was diagnosed by sears as needing be replaced. My service engine light went off is what first made me aware of this issue. I read online that it's a faulty part, which has been recalled for certain years/VIN numbers by Nissan. I contacted Nissan directly, and they told me that my particular VIN is not covered under the recall. It is a cheap plastic part, and the new/replacement ones are made of metal is what I'm reading in the numerous cases discussed online from fellow Altima owners who have experienced the same issue with these years of production.

11 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2012

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima equipped with a 2. 5 liter engine. The service engine soon light came on around 4 February 2012. I took the vehicle to a local mechanic who advised the obd-ii code indicated a problem with the crank position sensor and that Nissan has had multiple recalls on some 2003 and 2004 Altimas with a 2. 5 liter engine for this problem. The mechanic advised me to take the vehicle to my local Nissan dealer to have them fix the issue due to the recall notices. On 6 February 2012 I went to my local Nissan dealer. The dealer advised me the vehicle identification number did not fall under any of the recall notices and therefore would not be able to perform any recall work. They did advise I could schedule an appointment and they would be happy to service the vehicle at their listed rates. I declined. On 6 February 2012 I took the vehicle back to my local mechanic and he performed the necessary work. The mechanic advised me he called Nissan to discuss the issue of replacing the crank position sensor and the dealer advised him it was a known problem with 2003 Altimas with the 2. 5 liter engine and both the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor should be replaced. The mechanic followed the dealers advice and replaced both sensors. . Read more...

13 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2010

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima which was just handed down to my daughter as her first car for her 17th birthday in January. While on her way to school one morning in March the car just shut off at a stop light at a very busy intersection. She obviously had no idea what to do and it was pouring rain. Someone behind her was kind enough to help a stranded teenager and she was able to call me. When I arrived to the intersection I hopped in her car, turned the ignition off and then back on, put the car in drive and it seemed fine. I noticed that the service engine soon light had come on. I immediately drove the car to a mechanic and he pulled up a recall for my exact vehicle and the exact situation. It reads: crank position sensor recall - this could cause the "service engine soon" warning light to come on and the engine to stop running without warning during vehicle operation, which could result in a crash. He referred me to see the dealership right away. I drove straight to the dealership and they claim that this recall was VIN specific and my vehicle was not affected. I'm here to tell you that my vehicle is affected and that Nissan does not stand behind the product they produce. Furthermore, Nissan apparently has no regard for the safety of their customers and the peace of mind that the car we bought is reliable. The Nissan dealer said it will be no less than $350 to replace both the cam and crank position sensors with labor. The mechanic shop I went to quoted me $110 for parts and $50 labor totaling $160. Again, I was very disappointed with Nissan. I can tell you for sure that my family will never purchase another Nissan vehicle. I will do my very best to encourage car shoppers to stay far away from Nissan because of the simple fact that after the initial purchase you are on your own. I strongly encourage Nissan to reconsider this particular recall and perform better business practices and customer satisfaction.

14 Service Engine Light On problem

2003 Nissan Altima. Consumer expresses concern that other 2003 Nissan Altima vehicles were not identified or included in campaigns related to the airbag/driver control module, airbag sensor and the crankshaft position sensor the consumer stated her vehicle was serviced at the dealer due to the continuous flashing of the air bag light. The dealer informed the consumer the air bag sensor was defective. As a result, the entire unit needed to be replaced. The consumer stated her vehicle was excluded from the air bag recall even though the vehicle was manufactured in 2002. On January 15, 2010 the vehicle began displaying problems such as difficulty cranking, sudden jerks while accelerating and loss of power. On January 16, 2010 the service engine light later illuminated. Testing revealed a defective crankshaft sensor. Also, the O2 sensor and catalytic converter had to be replaced.

16 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2009

The failure occurred for the first time February 17,2009. I was driving down the road and the power to my 2003 Nissan Altima se 3. 5 completely cut out. I was stranded in the middle of the road with a service engine light, the battery light, oil light and brake light all on. I tried to re-start my car and it would not start. I was finally able to get it into neutral. At first the engine turned over like it wanted to start but it did not immediately start. After the 3rd attempt it started up. I was able to make it to my destination 5 minutes down the road before anything else happened. I am very lucky and was not rear ended. When I pulled into my parking spot the same thing happened. This time it took about 5 attempts to get it to restart. The car was taken to our local repair shop and I was told it is a crank/cam position sensor. We replaced this item at a cost of $185. 21. My husband did an internet search and found out Nissan USA did a recall on 2002 and early 2003 Nissan Altima's for the crank/cam position sensor. I contacted Nissan to find out if my car was included in this recall and was informed I was not. I explained to them that this problem is a hazard to motorists and it should be addressed by Nissan. I was given a file #6422418 and that was all they could do for me. Meanwhile I have investigated to see if others have had this problem and it appears to be wide spread among the Nissan Altima's and some maximas. It is also not just an issue with the 2002-2003 models but extends up to the 2005 models. Most of the consumers have either made a complaint with Nissan or the better business bureau-automotive line. Nissan did make a recall on the 2005 Nissan Altima for the ecm which just resets the "check engine light" but still does not address the issue of the crank/cam position sensor. Some of these consumers have spent up to $500. 00 to get this sensor fixed.

17 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2008

My 2003 Altima 2. 5s started having problems the day I took my car in for a recall to reprogram the ecm. That night my engine bogged down and would not accelerate even when the gas pedal was mashed to the floor. The next day I called the Nissan service dept. And they told me there was no way their reprogram could have caused the problem. I noticed that when I turned my car off and then back on after about 5 seconds the engine would run fine, this by the way is going down the road with the car in neutral and turning off and back on. I have been dealing with this problem for a while and my service engine light comes on and says there is a camshaft and crankshaft sensor problem that is recalled on 2002 2. 5s Altimas. It came to a head the other day when I was taking my kids to school and it bogged down on me while pulling out into traffic and about getting me and my kids killed. There are numerous reports of this same thing on Nissan forums.

18 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2008

I have a 2003 Altima (almost 55,000 miles). The vehicle turned off while I was driving. All the suggested maintenance was and is up to date. When driving there is often a slight pull/stall like it is going to shut off. It was checked nothing was found to be wrong. Service engine like came on. Had the diagnostics done it showed something wrong with starter. Nothing was wrong with starter, never had any problems starting. I have done research and found that several 2003 Altimas are coming up with engine problems when they are fairly new, shutting off with out warning in the middle of traffic. Nissan doesn't appear to no what the problem is but are unwilling to take responsibility. Errors with the cam and crank sensors have been thrown out there for the reason the service engine light comes on. However, replacing this has not proved to be the solution to the problem.

20 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2008

The service engine light came on, and the engine will stop running without warning. This has occurred on multiple occasions, and has been diagnosed as issue with the crankshaft and/or camshaft position sensor. Local Nissan dealer has refused to fix, stating that this veh was not involved in that recall, even though there is evidence that this is a known problem with these sensors. This has happened several times over the last few months. The recall to program the ecm was completed, but it did not correct the problem.

21 Service Engine Light On problem

23 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2008

I own a 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5l s, subject to NHTSA recall # 06v242000 regarding overheating of the crank angle sensor. I have already experienced the stated consequences of the problem, including stalling of the car while driving several times and lighting of the service engine soon light. The car was serviced by the dealer on 10/26/07 to correct the defect (free of charge), which was done by reprogramming the electronic control module (ecm). This seemed to resolve the problem, up until yesterday when the service engine soon light appeared again. The car has been hesitating during acceleration on occasion lately, but has not stalled. I took the car back to the dealer, and they diagnosed it as a crank sensor problem. This is the same part that is affected by NHTSA recall # 06v242000 (above). The dealership claims that I need to have the sensor replaced (at a cost of $190, in addition to the $53 I spent for diagnosis today). They claim that this problem is not related to the recall, which I have a very difficult time believing since the recall notice states this part is adversely affected by engine temperatures due to poor location.

24 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

This complaint is in connection with recall number 06v242000 I have a 2003 Nissan Altima s. Lately my car has been dying on me at stop lights. Then my service engine light came on a couple days ago. It was the crankshaft position sensor. I looked online and saw I had a recall on my year car for the sensor. I tried calling the local Nissan dealership and they told me I didn't have that recall. I called Nissan customer service and they told me the same thing and to take it in and get it checked out, but I don't want to pay money for a recall.

26 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2007

My 2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5 quit on me while driving down the road and would not crank. The next morning I tried to crank the car and it would crank , I did not want to take the chance of breaking down on the highway so I had the vehicle towed to sparks Nissan in monroe, la. The technician did the recall on the vehicle and the service engine soon light was on and the machine put out a code that the car need a crank sensor , so I had him to put it on and I go to the get car and it would not crank again and the sensor had been put on . The car is doing the same thing it did when it cut off on me. Now they want me to put a computer in the car after they damaged my computer. I am very upset and they really don't know what is wrong and are giving me a hard time. I am seeking an attorney , because I see I am not the only one with this problem and something should be done about it.

27 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2007

Crank shaft sensor-2003 Nissan Altima 2. 5 s. I bought my car new from a dearlership and have owned it for 3. 5 years. It currently has 58,000 miles on it. My car started stalling out approximately 3 weeks ago. It cuts off on me the first time at a stoplight. About a week later it cut out on me twice after making a right hand turn. It threatened to cut off on me while driving down the highway at 60 mph. On 8/18/07 it cut off on me in a parking lot and the service engine soon light came on. On 8/20/07 we drove it to the dealership where they informed us of two pending recalls. The headlamp piece was ordered and will be installed later and the ecm was corrected. The dealership would not replace the electronic crank sensor because my car's VIN number was not included in the recall. I refuse to pay for this because this is a safety concern that should be handled by the dealership. Although the ecm recall was taken care of, I am not confident that this stalling problem will not occur again. The dealership did not offer a rental car or shuttle service. Does someone have to be killed before Nissan will step up to the plate, analyze and fix this problem once and for all! frustrated.

28 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2007

I have an 03 Nissan Altima with 77,000 miles that I kept well maintained. Six months ago my engine cut off while sitting at a light, and then it cut off again a month later while driving at 25 mph. This second incident happened after I took my car in for the ecm reprogram recall. My mechanic told me it was probably the mass air flow sensor, and so I paid the money to replace it, though now I wonder if this was a mis-diagnosis. A month ago, my service engine soon light came on, and since then I have had difficulty starting the car and the engine makes a weird puttering sound like it?s about to cut out while in idle. I called the Nissan dealership and was told that it sounded like the same recall issue and said that about 50% of the time, the ecm program is somehow lost and has to be reprogrammed a second time. I told him that didn't make much sense, it should be fixed the first time, and he said they could not figure out why it keeps happening. I took the car in to have it looked at and that's when he told me, never mind, this is actually an issue with the crank position sensor, which will cost $330 to replace. I did some research and found a recall back in 2003 on several 02 and 03 Altimas for replacing this exact part, and when I mentioned this to the dealership, they simply said my VIN number was not included in this recall so the issue with my car was unrelated and I would have to pay for it myself. Seemed like too big of a coincidence to me, so I called corporate Nissan to file a complaint. After several persistent phone calls, I was told they would make a note of my complaint for review, but they could not cover the expense for me. I am now taking my car to my independent mechanic who quoted me half the price to have the part replaced on my own dime. I can see I?m not the only one with this engine startup/stalling problem and it is a huge safety concern. Please make Nissan own up to the problem and fix the underlying issues, not just the ecm.

29 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2007

Engine stopped on road and restarted after 2 mins. Service engine soon light on. Engine stalled during multiple times. Scanner code detected issue with crank/cam shaft position sensor.

30 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2007

I own a 2003 Nissan Altima with a 2. 5 liter engine. I recently received a recall notice from Nissan. The notice stated that there is "the possibility that the engine might stop running while being driven due to an electrical problem between the crank angle sensor and the electronic control module. This may also result in the "service engine soon" light coming on. If the engine stops running while drivine, this could result in a crash without warning. " the service engine soon light did come on, and the car began hesitating while being driven. It also was difficult to start after driving for a few minutes. After calling the number on the notice, I took it to the dealer where the ecm was reprogrammed. The next day the problems re-occurred. When my husband called the dealer they said the sensor must have gone out, and would need to be replaced at a cost of $140. 00. He called Nissan, who said that they would not authorize the repair, even though the part was obviously faulty. The repairs were done by an independent repair shop for $40 less than Nissan quoted. I feel that Nissan placed a few dollars above the well being of their clients. I did not think to ask for the old part.

32 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2007

Service engine soon light comes up on my dashboard of Nissan Altima 2003. When I took it to the dealer, they said that there are a few recalls on this vehicle and they will fix it. After about 15 minutes of driving from their location, the light came up again. The car runs like its brakes are on. It once stopped at a traffic light. There is a big concern if it stops in the middle of the road and causes accident. How can I get Nissan to address it?.

33 Service Engine Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2006

My 2003 Nissan Altima VIN 1n4al11d33c2xxxxx was displaying a service engine soon light with a code of p0 507- idle system too high. . . . . This appeared approximately 3 weeks following the r0606 recall for a ecm re-porgram for a crank engine sensor. The intresting thing, my sister has the same car, did the same recall around the same time and had the same service engine soon light appear the same day with the same code. Searching the web, it appears many folks are having the same problem. I paid about $140 to have the problem fixed and want Nissan to refund my money, however 6 calls to them has gotten me no where.
