36 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/03/2016

For the 2nd time, the electronic steering column lock has malfunctioned in my 2009 Nissan Altima. This is utterly ridiculous! this is not normal maintenance. Someone needs to hold Nissan or the manufacturer of this part accountable for this. I am so disgusted with Nissan!!.

37 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/28/2016

Electronic steering column lock (escl) failed and was sticks and stranded. I am a full time student as well as working full time. Had to get my 09 Altima towed to the dealship and lost out on work and made my daily life a financial hardship. It is going to cost me $1100 just for the part and labor. This is a known issue with 2009 Altima's and needs to be recalled until Nissan fixes the issue. This is very dangerous situation to be in, if I was camping and had no cell phone service my life could seriously be in danger. Please issue a recall for this part.

38 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/27/2016

Luckily the car was parked and wouldn't start for this incident. After having it towed they needed to replace the steering lock mechanism. We're glad it wasn't being driven on the highway at the time it failed and possibly locked up the steering column. That could have been deadly. The replacement cost of this part is outrageous and should have been covered or replaced by Nissan. They've had a history of issues with this and should refund us the $1000 it cost just for the repair bill. It's ridiculous that people keep getting taken for something like this. Something needs to be done to remedy this situation.

39 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/26/2016

The car doesnt start because the car's starting system is faulty. It is called electronic steering column lock (escl) failure. Only Nissan dealers can fix this issue and they charge exorbitant amount of money for replacing a small part and for labor. This is not caused by a user error but because of a defect with this model itself. There are many such complains online and happens to people randomly. This is a severe health and life hazard. Me and my wife were about to leave for remote places when this issue happened and if that would have happened, we would have been in a huge mess! Nissan does not even have the courtesy to reimburse the full repair amount. I didn't even ask for the hotel and trip cancellation reimbursement but still they are not ready to budge. I escalated it to three levels but to no effect. This is sad. There must be a recall on this model. My car just has 60k miles on it and I feel cheated to have to pay $1100 for Nissan's fault just for the repair, let alone additional expenses I had to incur to book hotel last minute for two days and incur charges for the hotel stays for the rest of my trip. My honeymoon trip was screwed up because of Nissan and they are saying they can only reimburse me for the part which is only half the cost. I will sell this car as soon as I can and will never ever buy a Nissan car again. But, I would like to see this car recalled ASAP before it leads to someone's death.

41 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/19/2016

My wife was driving her 2009 Nissan Altima and parked. When leaving to go home, the car would not and could not start. The key lock symbol (red) and lock symbol (yellow) were lit on the dashboard. I did some research and found that the it was the steering column lock which many has been complaining about. I took it to the Nissan dealer and the part would be $600. 00. Attached is the printout of the warranty. This had me and my wife stranded on one of the coldest day of the year. They wouldn't consider fixing it unless it was a standard repair. This is crazy!!! it's the holidays and now this is happening. Good grief!!!.

42 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

I went to the mall to drop off a painting and my car wouldn't start when I left and was giving me the key indicator so after a 20 second search on google I found that a lot of Nissan owners had the same problem as me, which was the steering wheel column not receding to where it should be in order to lock the wheel. I think its absurd the piece is 600 at the dealership and 400 online. Then the key needs to be reprogrammed, if I would have known about such a tedious problem that Nissan was not accepting responsibility for, I would have just gotten another kind of car.

43 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

When parking in reverse, car does not start after 2 minutes. The electronis steering column lock unit (escl) malfunctions and shows error symbol on dashboard showing that immobilizer is activated and steering is locked. It is unsafe, dangerous and scary situation. I have family, with little kids in the car and stranded on side of a road, with car parked while the traffic is flying by. Nissan dealership and service center representative informed that there is no warranty and no recall. The cost of replacing steering wheel lock system is $1250. 00. This can not done by any other repair shops as all the parts must come from Nissan. It is a Nissan monopoly and ransom to get this repaired.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/27/2016

Car will not start because of the electronis steering column lock unit (escl) this is very unsafe I could have been with my children at a unsafe area for Nissan to tell me warranty is not avaiable anymore. The price to get this fix is 1200 this is so unfair if its a Nissan issue.

49 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/26/2016

My electronic steering column lock has malfunctioned for the second time. This malfunction does not allow the car to recognize the key fob, preventing ignition. I was stranded in a remote part of a forest preserve and because my car would not start I had to hike out 6 miles until I got cell phone coverage and could call for help. This problem happened to me previously in 2011. At that point Nissan had covered this repair as part of a lifetime extended warranty on the electronic steering column lock, but they decided in January 2016 to cancel this warranty.

50 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/19/2016

I have Nissan Altima 2009. My car was parked at home and just would not start. Able to open doors with key fob but not start with the push button. Found the electronic steering column lock was the problem and needed to be replaced. Cost me $1100 to fix it. Nissan has known about this problem and had extended warranty on this part to 6 years, without informing the customers. I realized this when the part had a problem in the 7th year and Nissan denied to cover the costs. Thank fully this happened at my home. Would have been extremely dangerous if I was travelling with my family had the problem at an isolated place.

51 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/04/2016

After leaving a doctor's apt on 4 oct, I get to my car and it want start. The intelligent key warning is lit up o the instrument panel and when I hit the push start button, the lock light is illuminated and I cannot push the brake pedal down. The steering column is completely locked. I recalled getting a letter from Nissan extending the warranty on the escl fro 6yrs/unlimited mileage. Nevertheless, I had to have my car towed to Nissan and as of today they are telling me that the extended warranty has expired. How is that possible when I got the letter a year after I purchased the car. So now I am stuck with paying $900-1200 to get this fixed. Nissan should be ashamed of themselves and should do a recall. I am so disappointed in Nissans response and service and I was looking at buying a new car at the end of the year from them. But they will not get my business.

53 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 10/02/2016

The electrical steering column lock (escl) failure which wouldn't allow the car to start is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. And that Nissan wouldn't recall it is a big shame on the manufacturer. On top of that, they charge ridiculously expensive to have the part replaced ($600+labor)??!! this is super unsafe for drivers in the northeast as we may get stuck in a cold winter freezing to death for what? there is even no mechanic problem with the car. Just a little wedge-like thing that wouldn't drop to where it's supposed to be???? ridiculous!!.

54 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 09/11/2016

Escl - electronic steering column lock I went to the store far from home and when I tried starting the car it did not start. The door locks worked but nothing else would come on. I was stranded for hours and had to leave my car in the store parking lot for 3 days.

56 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/22/2016

The Altima is equipped with an electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft. Escl may malfunction after the vehicle is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. This condition, should it occur, will only occur when attempting to start the vehicle, and not while driving. I turned on my car and took my 6 month old daughter to the doctor as she was running a high fever. Upon leaving the doctor¿s office at 12a. M. I pushed my start button to turn on my vehicle and it was unresponsive. I was left in the dark unable to operate my vehicle in the middle of the night with my 6 m month old baby. The parking I was in did not allow for overnight parking and I was alone with my baby. Upon researching Nissan had extended the warranty to the electronics steering column lock to 6 years unlimited miles from 3 years 36,000 miles warranty. I no longer fall on that and I am having this issue. Nissan says I am out of warranty and there is nothing they can do for me. According to their annoucement this is a ¿manufacturing irregularity¿ that now I have to find a way to pay. I have no savings to pay for such part and the towing already cost me a handful and put my baby in a dangerous situation. I am a single mom and truly upset with the situation. . Read more...

57 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 08/04/2016

My 2009 Nissan Altima is currently having issues with the defects in the electronic steering column lock (escl). The car just cut off on me as I was parking in a parking spot. Luckily I was able to force the gear in park. It disabled the push-button ignition on my car and locked my steering column. So, I was stranded! this is big safety issue because my car could've just continued to roll if I couldn't get it into the parked gear! it's unfair that as a consumer of Nissan, I have to experience this issue after the Nissan warranty on the escl expired in March 2015 and be posed with paying over $1000 in repair costs. Per Nissan, there was no specific mileage number that this defect could occur; so they should recall the escl systems in all affected cars instead of covering their own behinds and giving a warranty with unlimited miles and an end date of March 2015. Clearly Nissan is not concerned with its consumers safety. It's not fair to consumers that bought Nissan vehicles that experience the dangerous defect after March 2015. I am a very unhappy consumer at this time.

My 2009 Nissan Altima would not start for me today while I was on my way to atlanta. I stopped for gas and once I hopped on my car, in an unknown location, my car would not start. I haven't had any signs or issue with my car since I bought it 3 years ago. After waiting for hours in a town in which was very creepy I've finally found out it was my escl (electric steering column lock). Not only did I have to get my car towed way back to north carolina, I also ended up paying an arm and a leg at Nissan!!! come to find out everyone with a 2009 Altima has had this problem it seems like! they extended the warranty for a few months and that ended a year ago! I got nothing in the mall from Nissan regarding this so I was totally unaware of the defect! this has been a liability for me and my family being that I've spent over $1000 getting this done as well as towing fees! Nissan has to do something about this defect or else their will be thousands more than end up stranded who knows where because of Nissans defects! and their irresponsibility of their product!!.

67 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/21/2016

This complaint is being filed in reference to the defective steering column lock (part # 48700-9n00a) on this car. When this component fails, it leaves you stranded by being unable to start the car. I had just ended my late shift only to find that my car would not start. Fortunately nothing happened to me, but this put me in a situation that could have ended very badly, as I had to wait for someone to come pick me up. Nissan obviously knew of this problem because they extended the warranty and also improved the part, (now part #48700-9n00b); but I believe that a defective part, which they acknowledged as such by extending the warranty, should have been replaced through a recall. From the number of people on-line who have also been affected, I would think they would do this recall just to keep the customer satisfied. I know I will be looking at other brands for my next car.

68 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Steering column lock.

69 Steering Column problem of the 2015 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/08/2016

My car which was purchased less than a month ago, is back at the dealership for the third time. The car continues to have many issues. There is a shimmy/vibration in the steering column as well as vibration in the door, accelerator and floor boards. It often seems that there are problems with the suspension as well as the brakes. The most important issue is that the car continues to drive off the road to the right and you have to force it out of a right-hand turn. Although this problem also seems to occur to the left as well, it is not as apparent. What is apparent, is when you try to compensate for the drifting, it over-compensates to the other side and it never feels as though the tires are holding the road at all times. It is practically impossible to manage the car on the highway. This issue is a huge safety issue that is not only putting the lives of myself and my family in danger but the lives of the others on the road as well. I have absolutely no confidence that this car can be repaired to any level of safety.
