The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that while driving out of the driveway and making a left turn, the steering wheel turned 360 degrees. The check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the steering column failed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic informed the contact that if she continued to drive the vehicle, the steering wheel may seize and cause the brakes to fail as well. The contact then contacted the manufacturer but was informed that the vehicle was over the warranty coverage and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 130,000.

I am having a steering wheel lock failure on my 2009 Nissan. There are many many complaints about the same issue. However, my vehicle VIN was not part of the recall for other 2009 Nissan ( not sure why) which makes no sense. The car did not start what so ever and stuck with a toddler is not acceptable and dangerous. This is obviously something Nissan made that was defective and should be taking care of.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact attempted to start the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was taken to boch Nissan (525 boston providence hwy, norwood, MA 02062, 781-619-7200) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel lock failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
Electronic steering lock column has failed on my vehicle. This part is a known issue for 2010 Nissan Altimas burn 2008 has not been even addressed. This failed part . Had left me stranded. The vehicle was stationary when the lock no longer worked. Failed unit had been quoted at $1100 repair cost.

Steering wheel lock unit failure. My car was all of the sudden dead at home depot the other day and this was the second times it happened. First time it happened but I was abled to start my car the next day so I thought it was ok. Until couple days ago it happened again and this time I had to tow my car to the shop to have it check. The shop checked it and told me it was the steering wheel lock box problem. I have searching online and here are many people had this problem happening to their 2009 Nissan Altima. I would like to file complaint about this issue snd have Nissan to recall this problem.
The steering lock failed without warning, leaving me stranded. The only way to fix it was to have the car toed to a dealer. The price of the part was very high and the labor was very high also. Nissan is aware of the problem and did not send a notification to me about the problem. This left me stranded and also left me with the bill. Nissan replaced the part for free for awhile but stopped before my car broke. I worry if there are other problems they did not notify me about.
Steering lock unit failure, car wouldn't start and left me stranded and had to be towed. I understand this part has had thousands of failures from online research for this vehicle but hasn't been recalled.
I had steering wheel lock failure in an area that was unsafe and I could not start my car again to drive away. I had to call emergency road side service to tow my car to the dealer who repaired my car for a $900 fee. After doing further research I have found that hundreds of people that have had this car have been affected by this issue. Nissan is well aware of this issue and yet have failed to due recalls on the car to repair the issue once and for all. I have had 2 recalls already on this car and this issue should be considered a necessary recall as well. People could be in area that are not safe and are unable to move their vehicle or could be in freezing or hot weather and are unable to move their vehicle. This is dangerous. Your car becomes completely disabled and this is an issue that continues to plague their customers. I was fortunate that this did not occur until I reached over 100,000 miles, but other people had this occur at a school low as 33,000. This repair ranges anywhere from $900 to $1200 to repair. Nissan should be responsible for repairing this for their customers as they know that this is an issue with this vehicle for the 2009 and 2010 models.
Recently my 2009 Nissan Altima experience a steering column lock failure that left my car incompacitated (unable to start) and left me in freezing cold temperatures.
Unable to start car due to steering lock failure. Car was parked outside on cold winter night. Left businees early am, car recognized Smart key but would not pass out of lock position. Had battery and remote checked issue due to failure in the ignition control module.
2009 Nissan Altima steering lock failure occured for no reason, fault, wear and tear, leaving me stranded without the key working to start the stationary car. Nissan admitted a defect and extended the warranty on the 2009 Nissan Altima steering lock part knowing this, but placed an expiration on the extended warranty. This expiration did/does not cover the actual cars impacted and was, I believe, solely designed to avoid a formal recall. I did not receive any communications informing me of this defect, including during all of my dealer servicing visits that were within the warranty period. The steering lock failed on my 2009 Nissan Altima. The dealer, clay cooley in irving TX service advisor said that I was six months out of warranty and it would cost $1,200. 00 to repair it. Nothing was wrong with my key fobs and the the car was in great shape with the exception of the defective 2009 Altima steering lock that prevents my car from reading my key fobs. This shooed be a recall without expiration. I purchased the car new from Nissan and remain the original owner. Nissan should bear the cost for this entire $1,200. 00 repair as it is not normal wear and tear, preventative, of any control of myself. It is a manufacturer defect.
The steering lock failed. The car wouldn't start and was stuck in the lock position. I had to have the car towed to a dealership and it is now going to cost me $957 to fix for parts and labor.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. After operating the vehicle, the steering wheel failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering ignition lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the push to start feature failed to start the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering lock mechanism failed and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
12-2-16, Friday 9:30 pm very cold in northeastern ohio. Car in parking lot would not start because of a steering lock failure. Called neighbor 25 miles away for a ride home. 12-3-16,sat. Car towed to Nissan dealer where purchased. Repair would cost upwards of $1,000. Research on the internet indicates Nissan had extended warranty repairs for this problem and then recinded it. I believe this is a safety issue. If a person is stranded and cannot get a cell tower connection, one could freeze to death. What if a family with small children experienced this on a sub-zero night? the car has only 55,400 miles on it but I do not trust it for me or my wife to drive. There should be a federal recall for this problem.
The steering lock mechanism failed while stopped and parked, resulting in my significant other being stranded twice in a 3 day period. The first day a light tapping on the device allowed the car to be started. But after the second time, nothing could be done to get the car to start. This has happened 5 total times now over the course of the past 2 years. What if this were to happen in below 0 conditions where help is not close by?.
The steering wheel lock has failed leaving the car unable to be started. I was stranded at my work and the car needed to be towed to the dealership to be diagnosed. The dealer is aware of this as a common problem yet are unwilling to issue a recall and my car is out of the warranty period. This problem is a major safety issue because people are being stranded on the road. If you're lucky, then you are parked safely in a parking lot but you might not be so lucky and it could fail while you are driving.
Went to work. Once entering back into the vehicle it wouldn't start showed key icon on the steering wheel. I researched online and it is the electronic steering column lock failure. I called Nissan and was notified that the recall ended in 2015. I was not notified. Once I spoke to gene at Nissan company said the dealer never notified them I was a Nissan owner. Had to have the car towed to a mechanice.
Electronic steering control lock failed, leaving me stranded on the side of the road, apparently a common problem with 09 Nissan, contacted Nissan and opened a case, they called back and refused to help, with anything. What a joke Nissan is turning out to be. There are literally thousands of posts on this problem, and Nissan gives an unlimited mileage replacement that ended in 2014, I offered to pay for the labor if they would replace the part, obviously they have no interest in my future business.
My car would not start due to the electrical steering column lock failure . This is also known by Nissan and they still have not recalled this issue. Which is very unfortunate to the Nissan owners and it is expensive to fix.
Electronic steering column lock failure. Leaves car disabled where ever you are. Car will not start. Must be towed. Nissan had an earlier recall but never published it to 2009 Altima owners.
Steering lock switch failed, which prevented the steering wheel from locking when parked, and the car from starting. Battery is in good condition. Required towing for repair. Nissan is aware of the steering lock issue, but has not issued a recall although this seems to be a frequent part failure.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel lock failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated they would get back in touch with the contact. The failure mileage was approximately 85,300.
My mother-in-law drove the car to work in the morning with no issues. When she went to leave at the end of her evening shift, the car would not turn on when the push button start was pressed. Thankfully a CO-worker was still with her and able to drive her home, otherwise she would have been stranded in a precarious situation waiting for a tow truck for who knows how long. The car was parked in a parking lot of a bank branch (where she works). After researching the behavior, we learned about the steering lock module failure. After having it towed to the dealership, they confirmed our fears. Unfortunately, the repair was grossly expensive. Upon filing a claim for payment assistance or reimbursement with Nissan, we were denied as they said it was not a recall/safety issue, their "customer satisfaction warranty extension" offered has expired, and the NHTSA did not feel the issue was tied to customer safety therefore it wasn¿t a recall. I believe this is unreasonable. My mother-in-law, or any driver, could be stranded with a useless vehicle, unable to start the car, due to a known failure in a Nissan part. At a minimum, Nissan should have been required to notify owners of this known and the possibility of being left stranded should the car fail to properly turn on.
The electronic steering lock fails and locks the steering-wheel. The car fails to start again. I am worry this will lock while driving. Is unreliable. Repair cost goes up to thousand dollars.
Common problem from all Nissan 2009 owners. . . . Steering wheel lock has failed. This is obviously a manufacture defect and the safety point is that it can go out at anytime and leave my wife stranded in places she should not have to worry.
Takata recall I am emailing with hopes that Nissan will issue a recall for the 2009 Nissan Altima's steering lock failure. The warranty on this part was extended, but I didn't have any issues until after the warranty expired. I don't understand how a company can acknowledge that a part is defective and not issue a recall. I had to discover this issue at the end of my work day in 100 degree weather. It is not fair to expect car owners to pay for this out of pocket when Nissan is aware of the defective part.
Electronic steering lock sensor fail unable to start car or lock or start. Fortunately had just park vehicle. . On city street.
Steering lock failure. The car had an extended warranty on this part but Nissan refuses to pay to have it replaced because the warranty expired last year. My car is unusable due to the high cost to replace this part. (1000. 00) Nissan should be required to recall this part and cover the cost since it is a defect on their part. The car was stationary when this happened. It just wouldn't start back up.
Steering lock column failure. Just outside of the supposed extended warranty. Called Nissan took a week to hear back said they would not cover repairs. About a $1000 to replace!.
I went to start my2009 Nissan Altima car that was parked in front of my door and it did not start, the doors would lock and unlock but it would not start it was in the lock position . I had my car towed to the dealership and was told that the electrical tech found that the steering lock failed. It is vey expensive to fix. It will cost me around a $1,000. Oo to have it fix. I spoke with the custome service rep with the Nissan department and I was told that the extended warranty has expired and that I needed to take my my car to the dealeship and let them dignosed the problems and call back and they may be able to help. Called back with the ddiagnostic result and my claim was denied because the warranty has expired in September of 2015 and their was nothing they can do about it. I feel a recall should be call on this part. If there was an extended warranty to have this fix they should have informed buyer of this like it was a recall.
Steering lock failure. . . Car broke down at gas station, won't start, brake won't work, car is locked up. Now I have $1,000 bill to fix a problem I should not have had in the first place.
My car left me stranded because the steering wheel lock failure. I went to start the car and the car wouldn't start at all. Nissan doesn't see this as a safety issue which is ridiculous because this issue is clearly unsafe because it strands the driver. The car becomes immobile and dead. The only way to fix this is to pay at leave $600 for the part plus another $200-$300 for installation. The worst part is that Nissan was aware of this problem when they manufactured the car because it is in the owners manual warning the driver that the car will leave you stranded. How is this not a recall?!.
Takata recall. My complaint is regarding the 2009 Nissan Altima steering lock failure. My lock failure occurred on 05-22-16. I returned home after a day of spending time with some friends. I parked my car and later that evening, I decided to go to the store. Once I got in the car, I couldn't start it. The brake was really hard to push and yellow key light illuminated from my dashboard. The fob would allow me to unlock and close doors. The lights worked, but the engine would not start. I was lucky enough to have this situation occur in the parking lot of my apartment complex otherwise the car could have broken down somewhere really unsafe. My vehicle had to be towed to the nearest Nissan dealership where it was fixed for $939. 38.
