41 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 04/05/2016

It would not start at all, the light comes on and the steering is not locked but the car will not start at all and it can not shift at all. After looking in the manual it states that it is an idicator that the steering lock has failed. This seems to be an issue with hundreds of other cars and it is going to cost 1200 to fix this. My fiancee was stranded an hour from home and his cell died, not to mention he works nights and got off at 5am and could not find a ride or a nearby place to call home long distance.

Called up Nissan to get a warranty claim since the extension ended for me in Jan. 2015. When asked for assistance, was told that they have done so in the form of the warranty extension. Took the car to dealer for diagnosis per corporate's procedure even though I knew the issue, now out $158 and was quoted $1,600 for their repair. Cant do anything with the car, its unusable and non-sellable all due to a defective part. Nissan should issue a recall and take care of their defective part.

48 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

The electronic steering control lock failed after 62,000 miles. The dealership charged me $1,100 to replace it. This is a know problem that Nissan addressed with a secret warranty extension that was not communicated to owners. At one point I believe Nissan extended the warranty to 72 months/unlimited miles, but then changed its mind and ended the extension. I parked the car on 1/1/16 and it would not start after that.

Failure Date: 01/24/2016

Steering lock failure, car will not start!.

52 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 01/20/2016

My 2009 Nissan Altima had its steering column lock malfunction and left my wife stranded in a blizzard. She went to work, was going to head home for the day and the car wouldn't start. So I started the process, check the batteries in both the car and the key fob. As it turns out from researching the problem that it's a steering column lock failure. This is a very common problem with 2009 and 2010 Altimas. Nissan has full knowledge of this issue, but fails to recall these cars. They did extended warranty on this part, but of course, this occurred after the extended warranty had expired. Its a $1000 plus repair minimum and the part that they want to replace it with is faulty as well. In efforts to contact Nissan consumer affairs I was treated like crap. They cant do anything for me until I have it towed(at my expense) to a certified Nissan dealer(45 miles away) and have them diagnose the problem. After watching numerous videos on this issue. I'm sure that this is the issue and I have many hesitations on having the part replaced because again the new part is also faulty, and comes with no warranty. So Nissan has left me with two choices. Option a: have car towed, pay the labor, and replace with another faulty part($1100 at least). Or option b: try to fix myself by bi-passing the part all together. Unfortunately this option is going to be a temp fix and the part is riveted so access to it is difficult. Not to mention affects my resale value. Its almost like this was Nissan's plan with designing this steering lock mechanism. Its a safety hazard as my wife and countless others have been stranded alone. After watching numerous diy videos I was able to get the car home by tapping the part numerous times with a hammer. We were able to get the car home, but there it sits in the driveway useless. Ive tried to start it since and guess what. . . Nothing. The vehicle is useless.

53 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima. When attempting to start the vehicle, the ignition failed without warning. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.

55 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/26/2015

Merry christmas Nissan! thanks for making it a memorable one. I drove to a relatives home the day after christmas. The car was parked on a city street. When I went to leave, the car would not start or do anything. A yellow key symbol appeared. The car would not start, nothing was happening. The brake was very stiff. No ability to shift. No radio or dash lights would work. I had to have the vehicle towed to a local Nissan dealership. Electronic steering lock failure at a cost of $900. 00. I was then told by Nissan dealership that Nissan was well aware of the issue and they had added an extended warranty to fix the bad part but it had expired earlier in 2015. I only went to dealership 3 times with sterring lock issues previously only to be told that it was my fob not the steering lock. I have 2 fobs and questioned how 2 would be having issues. Never a good answer or option. Never was I told there was bad part that was covered under warranty! shady business, the part should be recalled for safety and negligence. What if it stopped working and locked while I was actually driving? I travel for work and what if it stopped in a bad area leaving me stranded? what if it was extreme cold or heat? the issue is that Nissan knows about a bad part but have left customers to pay $900 to fix their bad part leaving people in danger. There are countless stories online about this same issue. Nissan changed the part in approx 2010. They need to own their mistake and stop leaving people stranded in harms way. I don't understand why Nissan is allowed to make a bad part, know that the bad part will disable the car and leave people stranded without any notice. The consumer gets insult to injury and has to pay for Nissan's mistake at a $900. 00 cost. Again, merry christmas Nissan.

56 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/24/2015

Dear sir/mam, my 09 Altima broke down on christmas eve night in front of a friend's house, blocking friend's cars in garage, and cannot start no matter what. After 6hrs trying and contacting, finally found a towing company can come onsite at that hour on a holiday night, snowy and rainy. The dealership concurred my research that this is caused by a defective part - the electric steering lock failure, on all 2009 Altimas. However, Nissan extended the warranty on that to 5 years instead of a recall, and they refused to cover any of my loss in this case simply because the extended warranty expired 4 months ago, for a defective part. . . A lot of victims like me formed a website and more being reported every week as we speak. We are trying to start a class action case against, meanwhile, we are encouraged to tell our stories here too. Best regards,.

57 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 12/21/2015

My wife and I purchased a 2009 Nissan Altima in October 2009 and did not encounter any major issues until a few days ago. On 12/17/2015, my wife was left stranded in a parking lot outside a grocery store at night due to unable to start the car. We tried using a key fob with a good battery and jump starting the Altima, but it would change the car from ¿lock¿ mode to ¿on¿ mode (where the car can be started). We did extensive research, and found there were a tremendous number of 2009 Nissan Altima owners that had encountered the same issue, some stranded on the highway, and some in snow with kids. Many people post on blogs and youtube about this issue. We ended up having the car towed to a Nissan dealership for examination for $110, and their diagnosis result confirmed that the steering lock mechanism (part # 48700-9n00b) needed to be replaced ¿ they quoted us $1152 for part ($650) and labor. The part is for sales for $360 on amazon. Com. Nissan USA was well aware of this issue, and they extended the warranty on the steering lock mechanism part for 3 years. However, we have not received any notice from them about this. As our car is 10 weeks out of the extended warranty window, Nissan USA won¿t cover the repair expenses. As a Nissan Altima owner for 13 years, we felt betrayed by Nissan ¿ they were supposed to keep the owners informed on this issue and should have issued a recall, or worked with the oem provider and dealers for a cost effective solution. Instead, they have kept the 2009 Nissan Altima owners in the dark, until many of them got stranded in danger. We sincerely urge you to investigate this issue, and help us and other fellow 2009 Nissan Altima owners. As of 12/2/2015, a google search of ¿2009 Nissan Altima steering lock failure¿ yielded 46,600 results. . Read more...

65 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Nissan Altima

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

Car was parked in an apartment complex. It wouldn't start, the steering wheel was locked, and you couldn't changed it to neutral to position it for jumper cables. Found it it was a steering lock failure. Had car towed to my house, where we took the car apart to try and fix it ourselves. Ended up taking out a fuse to get it working. While this isn't a direct hazard (accident, injury, or death), this has happened to too many people for it to not be looked into. Nissan is unwilling to help. More and more people will become desperate and jerry-rig their cars to avoid paying $800-$1000 for repairs. That is the bigger hazard. You will continue to have unlicensed people looking at youtube for ways to "fix" their own cars, probably creating more issues. Then you will get the accidents, injuries, and deaths you need to investigate Nissan. Please don't let it get to that point.
