Noticed e-brake no longer holding. Took to local shop. Told me need new e-brake pads and rear axle bearings, seals. Apparently bearing seals failed and gear oil saturated brake pads. Took to dealer to fix bearings and seals under warranty (though they charged me for the brake pad replacement that was a direct result). A little online search reveals the bearing problem common on Frontiers, a result of improper axle venting. Apparently there was a retrofit part that Nissan sold to address this that has since been pulled from the parts offering.

Both left and right axles seals failed causing gear oil to saturate the rear disc brake pads, rotor and emergency brake shoes. Extreme decreased braking, which could have led to an accident. This is a true safety problem, which seems to be quite common with the Frontier and titan pick-ups.

The contact owns a 2008 Nissan Frontier. While driving approximately 5-10 mph approaching a stop sign he engaged the brakes and the brakes popped. When he depressed the brakes they failed to operate, he then engaged the emergency brake. He continued to drive to his destination. He called a tow company and had the vehicle towed to an authorized Nissan dealer. The dealer advised him that all four rotors and the front brake pads had rusted out. The dealer was repairing the vehicle at the time of the complaint. The failure and current mileage were 4,844.

I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier that the right inner pad is worn to the sensor. The disc pad is wearing at noticeable angle from leading edge to trailing edge. The other pads are wearing normally. The truck also has a severe brake pull to the right. The pull is worse when hot. The car is undriveable at this time. The car will swith lanes when the brakes are applied. As an ase certified auto technician I believe the cause is the use of phenolic caliper pistons. Phenolic pistons are known to cause brake pulls, locked up brakes and uneven pad wear.

Pads are worn on vehicle, and the parts are not available throughout the country. Consumer has been waiting for 2 weeks. Manufacturer is aware of problem, but can do nothing until parts are found.

This is one of two 2001 Frontiers I own. Both have had premature wear on the passenger side inside front brake pad. All other pads were fine on both trucks. It sems the pad bcomes lodged in the caliper and does not retract when the brake is released.
