Cruise Control Problems of Nissan Maxima

While driving the forward emergency brake light comes on. After it comes on there is a reduction of power. It disables cruise control. This happens when the vehicle is in motion on a city street or when you go to take off.

I was driving in the right lane on a four lane interstate highway with good driving conditions and a 70 mph speed limit. The car was an enterprise rental. Adaptive cruise control uses the accelerator and brakes to maintain a safe distance to the car ahead. It is done by sensing the distance to the car ahead at about 5 car lengths then adjusting the accelerator and brakes as needed to maintain this spacing and avoid a rear end collision. The fault is seen in changing lanes. The cruise was set at 70 mph and my car approached a car ahead going 65 mph. My car's adaptive cruise decelerated to 65 mph. I steered into the next lane, and the space was not the requisite 5 car lengths, the car sensed a car closer than 5 lengths reducing my speed to less than 65 mph. My car was now slowing down below 65 mph in a lane with cars going 70 mph. I pressed on the accelerator, accelerating to 70 mph, avoiding a rear end collision. Enterprise did not inform me of the adaptive cruise features and operation. There was no warning sticker in the car stating: "turn off cruise control when changing lanes. ".

Cruise control drops out while engaged under all road/weather conditions. Dashboard indication "front radar unavailable due to obstruction" seems well documented online for several other Nissan vehicles. System will reset itself after several minutes, but also drops out and is non-functional intermitently, essentially making the tracking cruise control inoperable.

The airbag system stopped working. The airbag light continues to flash and the cruise control has stopped working. The vehicle was stationary when this started.

Driving home with car on cruise control and vehicle on its on accord revved the rpms over 5000 and then we heard a metal clinking and listed all power.

Check engine light stayed on even after routine maintenance was done. The cruise control stopped working after the 1st year I bought it. In the 5 years I have owned the car, the starter has been replaced twice, the differential was replaced, tie rod ends were replaced, struts were replaced, a new muffler/tail pipe was replaced, and this year, 2 oil leaks developed, 1 inside the engine. The mechanic said this was a defect of Nissan, not anything that I did or didn't do. It cost over $700 to fix the leaks. The leaks blew out the sensors, and the car didn't pass the emissions. I spent another $850 in getting new sensors. Once the sensors were replaced, the mechanic said there was a short in the fuel injector and he had to replace that. There is still a short in the car somewhere as one of the back lights turns off and on when it feels like it, as does the light for the radio console (which its the original radio that came with the car, so it's not like someone messed around with it. ) after replacing the sensors, the check engine light came on after the 2nd emissions test, which it rejected the car because it wasn't ready yet. The mechanic spent 7 (yes, seven) days trying to figure out what was wrong with the car, only to replace the entire dash board. After 1 day of driving, the check engine light came on again. No one can seem to figure out why the check engine light is on. Now the car feels unsafe when I'm driving it, as when the car hits 20 mph and 40 mph, the car jerks to the right and I have to concentrate on making sure I don't hit anyone. No one can seem to figure out what that is either. The fan is starting to sound loud when the air/heat is on or when the car is idle (stopped at a light) and the air only gets cold when its cool outside, not when it's hot. I spent $22,000 buying this car, and about another $5000 in repairs to date and its not yet 10 yrs. Old.

Clicking noise from my 1997 Nissan Maxima 5 - speed odometer. Shifting problems, no cruise control and no mph reading or odometer reading after clicking stopped. Shifting completely failed after about a month. Mechanic that fixed the problem said that the odometer box located near the gears fell apart and the pieces of the odometer components fell into my gears damaging them and ultimately preventing the use of my vehicle. Mechanic also told me it was nothing I had done to contribute to this failure.

At cold startup, engine oil light usually flashes, and engine makes loud sound like it doesn't have oil pressure. This goes away after a few seconds. Nissan advised to always use Nissan oil filters, which I do, and problem has existed since car was new. When car is fully warm and in drive at a standstill with lights on and a/c off, car idle will drop to about 500 rpm, causing annoying vibration. Dealer says no problems found. Resume on cruise control has failed intermittently about 1 of every 20 times. Resume feature will not work, and you must reset the cruise to the preferred speed. Dealer says no problems found. Door locks/keyless entry have failed several times. Power locks have locked and instantly unlocked when pressing lock button on keyless remote; also, locks have unlocked and then locked when pressing unlock button and had to manually unlock each door. Dealer says no problems found. This is the 8th Nissan vehicle my family has owned and the first I have personally bought new; I do not expect this from a new Nissan car and do not expect the dealer should ignore my complaints.
