I own a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder, 4wd, automatic transmission. The vehicle has 167000 miles. I have never previously had a problem with the vehicle. I was driving the vehicle on 7 may 2011. I was doing 35 mph and noticed that the vehicle was not slowing after I took my foot off of the accelerator pedal. I tapped and released the accelerator pedal and still the vehicle did not slow. I immediately shut off the ignition and, although lacking power, stopped the vehicle. I started the engine after my stop. The engine revved to 6000 rpm plus. I shut off the ignition and started the engine again. It again revved to 6000 rpm plus. I worked the throttle cable by hand, pumped the accelerator pedal several times. It started normally and rpm was normal - approx. 800 rpm. I drove home without mishap. I took the vehicle to my dealer on 9 may 2011. Was told that problem occurred with mechanic driving the vehicle. The idle control valve and throttle cable were replaced. Dealer states that he is 90% certain that this will have resolved/fixed the problem.

2001 Nissan Pathfinder. Consumer writes to inform that while in cruise control vehicle gradually accelerated to 91 miles per hour, which was approximately 25 m. P. H above the cruise control setting
the consumer stated an attempt to brake had little effect. After switching the gear in neutral and applying both feet hard on the brake, she was finally able to pull over to the shoulder and ultimately stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop. The mechanic informed the consumer the throttle cable flipped over the top of the butterfly valve. He adjusted the tension for less slack to keep the cable from bounding up inside the throttle body.

Gas pedal sticking/brakes not working. Emergency brake failed to stop the car. Had to shut the car off while still in motion. Car was towed. At the time that I was attempting to stop the car, the speed read 45 mph. However, when the tow driver arrived he stated that the rpm's read as if someone was pressing down at at rate of 135 mph - no one was in the car at the time. Diagnostic service for not stopping when applying brake pedal. Broken cable accelerator. Mechanic also informed that the entire interior body of the car had completley rusted; to the point that it is not driveable.

My Pathfinder has been involved in two similar incidents in a span of 5 months. The first incident occurred on March 11,2003 (please see odi number 10036981). It is my opinion that a vehicle malfunction caused both incidents. It is a fact that repairs ordered by the dealer (bg fuel induction service) on March 12,2003 did not address the problem. Second incident: on Aug. 21,2003, at approximately 8:00 am, I drove the Pathfinder to the second floor of my school parking garage. The parking spaces are at a right angle to the building outside wall; therefore, a driver is required to describe a small arc to park a vehicle within the two boundary lines painted on the floor. I usually park away from other vehicles, if possible, to avoid opening-door contact with vehicles already parked. As the steering wheel is being turned to park in a specific spot, a vehicle usually moves slowly because of its own forward motion when in drive;therefore, it's normal to keep a foot on the brake pedal to come to a final stop. A narrow sidewalk separates the parking area from the building outside wall. I approached the sidewalk slowly to avoid hitting the curb with the tires. Suddenly, the Pathfinder lurched forward, hitting the curb at a high speed. I was not able to stop the vehicle even though I pressed the brake pedal fully. The vehicle climbed on the sidewalk and hit the wall. The impact on the wall caused both front air bags to be activated, the windshield cracked on the passenger side, and the car alarm went off as the front fender hit the wall. I received cuts and bruises on both arms, probably caused by by the seat belt and the air bag. The Pathfinder suffered $ 7,218. 74 in damages. Building property damage (still undetermined) was also caused. The wall on each floor of the parking garage is made of pre-stressed concrete slabs about 4 or 5 feet tall and reinforced with stretched steel cables. The concrete slab cracked and bent slightly outwards along the middle;fortunately, it did not collapse.
