The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle was towed to walser Nissan wayzata (612-426-6995, located at 15906 wayzata blvd, wayzata, mn 55391) via the after hour service. The contact left a message for the technician to diagnose the failure and provide a report. The contact went on a vacation. Overnight, the general manager of the dealer called the contact and informed him to move the vehicle from the premises before 8am the following day. The contact explained that he was out of town. At approximately 135000 miles my Pathfinder began making a a grinding sound when I turned my steering wheel left or right. I also noticed that the actual steering wheel was loose and could be moved back and forth. Within a few days I began having great difficulty when making turns while driving. I had my husband check the steering fluid, which was at the recommended level. I then took my Pathfinder to the mechanic to be inspected and find the root of the steering problem. I was informed that my steering column would need to be replaced. The Nissan frontier and xterra has recalls for this exact issue for the same year, but not the Pathfinder. I have 3 children who travel regularly with me in my vehicle. I was informed by the mechanic, that eventually I would lose all steering capability if the steering column in not replaced I find this to be gross negligence on behalf of Nissan. Many complaints for this specific issue have been made, and yet no recall?! this is a safety issue, which could put not only mine, but my children's lives at risk. The replacement cost is around $1500. I hope Nissan does the right thing and issues a recall soon.

Had to have steering column replaced due to it breaking and causing hard steering and no control of wheels. Barely made it home. Also the transmission had to be flushed and by passed due to cooler getting water in transmission. Both of these are safety items and Nissan dealer says not enough complaints about these problems. Cost me $3400 in repairs which had to be done due to safety reasons. The car was in motion each time on freeway and had to stop and get it towed to mechanic because it was unsafe to drive anywhere.
I heard a rubbing sound and the passenger side front brake was acting unusual so I took my truck to my mechanic assuming it needed brakes. When the driver front wheel was taken off it was ovious that my brake pad was fine. It was noted that my tires were wearing unevenly and it was also very very ovious that the entire wheel wheel area was corroded,rusted and missing. There was a extremely large hole being the wheel area. Looking further it was noted that the steering column was rubbing against a part of the engine area. That explains the rubbing sound and diffuculty turning the wheel. It was also noted that the suspension was rotted and that the engine measured around 2 inches lower as it was leaning on the drivers side. I was told by my mechanic that the damage was so extensive that it could not be repaired. There wasn't any metal available under the truck to even weld any reinforcement to. The truck was unsafe to drive and to take it to Nissan. We never went any further with an inspection of the passenger side ect. I did take it to Nissan in the afternoon and was called the following morning and told my truck was fixed. I was told they replaced the strut on the drivers side and put some fiberglass underneath the truck. They did say that it passed their 100 and something point safety check. They never addressed anything else. I have been without transportation for a week now.
There is a active recall for excessive corrosion in the driver side strut tower housing which can cause binding on the steering column. I received a recall in 2011, but never a follow up letter as stated would happen for the remedy process. I took my 2002 vehicle in since it was still eligible for repair. I was told that if it was not repairable ,I would be told so and then it would escalate to Nissan na. After bringing in the vehicle, it is now not drivable at all due to the dealership trying to do the recall and damaging the transmission cross-member that it dropped 8". The whole inside of the tower was badly rusted as was much of the under carriage. In fact they let me drive the vehicle back home (43 miles) on the day I bought it in due to my time schedule was not free for 4 hours to wait and they had no loaner vehicle. A mechanic that was ready to purchase the vehicle looked under the hood and showed to my amazement, the tower was already embracing the steering column in such a way as it was embedded in the steel. We have pictures and documentation. So the vehicle was towed back the following day and they went ahead and did the "repair" on the tower. I was called the next day and told that the vehicle was "all set" and ready to be picked up. To my wifes and my surprise the next am arriving at the dealer ship, was the obvious cross-member hanging down on the drivers side. The gm of serafini had the vehicle towed back to my residence in hopes of this all going away after he was going to check the "paper trail". When we got the vehicle back later on, only then did we receive a invoice (attached) telling us the car was uninspected(false) and not safe to drive. It was given to the tow truck operator and he gave it to us. Their way to settle it was to have a junk yard pick it up for $400. 00.

Nissan USA refuses to acknowledge that they is a recall on my vehicle, although the NHTSA records shows there is a recall because of the danger of steering column breakage. The steering column broke while my daughter was driving but Nissan says there is no recall and it would not repaid my vehicle. Although there is a NHTSA recall for my VIN, the local Nissan dealer referred me to the Nissan USA website, which states there is no recall. (see below). In December 2014, NHTSA's website said there was a recall on my vehicle. It now says there is no recall. Mechanical recall of November 2011 was never completed properly. On or about Dec. 21, 2014, the steering column broke while my wife and daughter were in the car. My mechanic inspected the call after the incident. He is willing to submit an affidavit stating that the recall was never properly completed. I have photos showing the unrepaired steering and housing that was supposed to have been repaired. The photos clearly indicate repairs were not done as required by the recall. Nissan USA insists it has no obligation to make repair.
Steering wheel all of a sudden became very difficult to turn regularly when driving/turning. After a couple weeks the steering column became very loose and caused the steering wheel to wobble. When turning the wheel I would notice a severe grinding sound. Upon detailed online research the same occurrence has happened to several 2006 Nissan Pathfinder owners with similar mileage. After taking my car to the Nissan dealership for further investigation we have found that Nissan has issued a service part to correct this issue. My repair will cost an upward of $1300. I feel that Nissan should make this issue a recall as the dealership informed me that if I continued to drive the car the steering wheel would lock up and potentially cause a hazardous accident!! this is a severe issue for myself and others.

I received Nissan car recall program(11v24400) and got inspection at local Nissan dealer(Nissan north America,inc. Ny) on 07/14/11. The inspection report showing my car "found excessive corrosion on left strut" since last year(07/14/11) inspection Nissan didn't give me any service of my car problem(I been call their dealer few times). I got answer from Nissan is they don't have this parts.

I have noticed that my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder which I bought in September of 2011 has been going bad I can move my steering wheel left to right and it wiggles it also wiggles up and down which is not normal and the steering is not right. It is hard to turn and sometimes it does not want to turn. I can move the steering wheel and jiggle it. I took it to Nissan and they say a bolt in the steering column is stripped and they cant tighten this. I have done some investigating and there has been people complaining of this issue since 2006. Why is nothing being recalled this is nothing that us owners have caused or did it cost me 900. 00 to fix this issue .

NHTSA # 11v-224. I dropped in Pathfinder in the dealership at the end of sept. 2011. The dealership told me that the car was unrepairable and leased a car to me. I have not got any information until March 27, 2012. Dealership called me said that car was fixed. Dealer told me that they did not think it was repairable, but Nissan wanted them to repair. Based on NHTSA safe recall compendium (a guide for the reporting, notification, and remedy of motor vehicle and motor vehicle equipment in accordance with title 49 of the united states code, chapter 301 and supporting federal regulations) prepared by the recall management division office of defects investigation national highway traffic safety administration u. S. Department of transportation, under ii recall remedy (page 10) that if the repair period exceed 60 days, manufacturer needs to replace the item with an identical or reasonably equivalent item or for a vehicle, refund its purchase price less a reasonable amount for depreciation. But now Nissan does not follow this rule and asked me to take the car back. I don't know which department will take care that Nissan is against the NHTSA rule?.

Dealership confirmed corroded strut towers were pulling away from the body of the vehicle and that it was unsafe to drive. Dealership indicated that Nissan USA refused recall because vehicle was not in a specified VIN range. Nhtsa later confirmed that the recall was not limited to a VIN range and that the vehicle meets the recall criteria because it is within the applicable year range and is registered in massachusetts. The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. While driving approximately 55 mph he noticed that the steering column felt loose and was shifting about a quarter inch in each direction. He also noticed that the vehicle seemed to lose power steering while making left and right turns because the steering wheel would become stiff. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where he was informed that he needed to replace the steering column. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure continued whenever he operated the vehicle. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 84,000.
I noticed that the steering in my 1997 Nissan Pathfinder se was pulling to the left and I had experienced some resistance while turning the steering wheel, so I began to inspect the engine compartment and wheel wells. I found that the driver-side shock tower has almost completely separated from the rest of the body of the vehicle. The way it has bent away has caused it to put direct pressure on both the steering column and the master cylinder. If the tower was to fail completely, I'm reasonably certain that it would shear off the master cylinder (leaving me without brakes!) and possibly sever the steering column.
I own a 2000 Nissan Pathfinder le, with 149,000 miles, which is now out of warranty. Tues 7/27/10, while pulling out of a parking space, I lost steering control. Find steering column is snapped. Tow to mechanic, who discovers the shock tower, which is part of the frame (uni-body design), has sheared away from the rest of the wheel-well. The shock tower has pushed up into the steering column, causing it to break. Mechanic gave estimate of $640. 00 for steering, and at least $1700. 00 for the wheel-well, which is a body shop repair. Also suggested to call Nissan to see if there a recall on wheel-wells as this is a safety issue, and is not the first time he has heard of this problem. This is not normal wear and tear, it is a design flaw. Control arms just below tearing in frame, if tearing continued, wheel could also become dislodged, in addition to loss of steering. Nissan was called, and wants vehicle towed to dealership for verification at my expense, and in addition pay for diagnostic service. Apparently, I am at their mercy, however how can they give me an unbiased diagnostic, as I am sure the results will be in their favor. I am now at a standstill as the repairs will apparently outweigh the value of the vehicle, which is $4125 trade-in value. However, if this happened on one side, it is reasonable to believe that will occur on the other, doubling cost of repairs.
