36 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 05/06/2010

2006 Pathfinder steering column issue. Steering goes from wobbly to tight but mostly wobbles. Problem worsening over the course of a few weeks. Gets really hard to steer when it is cold and gets very wobbly when it is warm. Nissan dealer say that at some point I will turn and the wheel will not return to center, but they say it isn't a safety issue. I guess we will have to wait for someone turning to crash into a bus stop or something for them to fix the problem. Well I came close yesterday. I was turn right and after the turn the truck kept turning right. I hit the curb and went up onto the sidewalk. I am just thankful there was no one walking at that spot. I was so scared I turned off the truck and just stood outside for a while.

37 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

I have a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder with a loose steering wheel (it can be moved up and down). I had it looked at today by Nissan and was told the whole steering column needs to be replaced. $850. I passed because I couldn't afford it, but they say the steering column is wearing away. I have seen many other complaints of this online and am worried for mine and my children's safety if my vehicle comes to a point where the steering wheel becomes non controllable.

38 Steering Column problem of the 2000 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 03/16/2010

My Pathfinder began making strange noises when turning/driving. It became more and more difficult to steer the vehicle and keep it going straight. After numerous trips to my repair facility and body shop the steering strut (driver's side) was found to be rusted and the car was deemed unsafe to drive. I turned it in to springhills salvage in springhills ohio in July of 2010 and received $300. 00 for a perfectly wonderful vehicle except for the rusted strut/steering. I have filed two claims with Nissan under this recall and both times they have denied my claim because I got rid of the vehicle prior to their recall. This is not satisfactory. 2006 Pathfinder steering column issue. Steering goes from wobbly to tight but mostly wobbles. Problem worsening over the course of a few weeks. Dealership states that bearings are worn out in the column and the only way to repair it is to buy whole new column and coupling for $1300. 42 Steering Column problem of the 1999 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 07/06/2009

Our 1999 1/2 Nissan Pathfinder's steering column separated from the wheels causing the vehicle to crash into a curbing. We had the car towed to our mechanic and they did a temporary fix but stated that the vehicle was so rusted out on the driver side that it needed to be welded back together with a piece of sheet metal. We spoke to three different sheet metal shops and all said that they would not do it because of safety concerns. We believe this problem occurred due to excessive corrosion on the driver's side strut tower and led to our loosing our steering. This occurred in July 2009, at that time, we knew nothing of a recall involving this problem, I called Nissan and they said there was nothing they could do and there were no recalls. Due to the fact that the vehicle could not be repaired, we had to junk it. The car was only 10 years old at the time and always maintained. I feel we should get some reimbursement as the car should have been worth something, however, if the steering column is no longer attached and corrosion is so bad, we could not sell this vehicle to anyone. We would like some type of reimbursement.

43 Steering Column problem of the 2003 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 05/16/2009

2003 Nissan Pathfinder. Consumer states problem with the steering wheel column the consumer stated in the spring of 2009, she began having problems with the steering column making noises. The mechanic performed a wheel alignment, in addition to other work totaling over $660. However, she continued to experience steering problems. The consumer returned to the dealer where they replaced the brakes, but the steering column still was not feeling right. Finally, the consumer went to another establishment who was able to ascertain and fix the problem. The repair shop found the rack and pinion very tight and adjusted the steering gear. The consumer stated since Nissan only sent her an interim notice, she did not know she should have taken the vehicle to the dealer for a free service, nor did she know to inform the mechanic about the strut tower housing damage to the steering column.

44 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 09/15/2008

Approximately sept of 2008, the steering wheel of our 2006 Nissan Pathfinder started becoming extremely hard to turn left or right, almost to the point that I could not turn. I would dread having to make a turn. Then a grinding sound started and a clicking, and has since gone away. Now, our steering wheel can move up and down while we are driving. It is very loose and is becoming a hazard. The cruise also shuts itself off while we are driving. After taking the car to 2 Nissan dealerships and a independent mechanic, we have been told the entire steering column has to be replaced - but Nissan will not replace this or help with the cost - around $800 for parts and labor. The independent mechanic told us there is a safety bulletin on this issue, but not a recall, yet. If this is a known problem with the steering column, shouldn't this be replaced by recall before an accident has happened? we have requested in writing from Nissan that they (Nissan) is refusing to replace this part. I am filing a complaint because this seems to be an issue that Nissan is aware of but is unwilling to resolve it.

45 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 08/20/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the steering wheel shook violently and the contact was not able to turn the vehicle without applying extreme force. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the steering angle sensor had broken away from the steering column and the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was to be repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

46 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 07/06/2006

On July 6, 2006 > 5 months after I bought my brand new Nissan Pathfinder le. I was driving when the steering wheel started to tighten. I was on the highway and it was becoming hard for me to turn the steering wheel in either direction to change lanes. Which was scary because I had my children in the car with me. I was able to go straight to the dealer and by the time I got there I could barely turn my steering wheel to the left to turn in. When they examined the car they found the upper bearing in the steering column was shearing and had come apart. I was lucky I was close to the dealership where I purchased the car and not too far away from home or driving on the highway were I could not pull over. They had my car in there over a week and a half which was a big inconvenience because they were having problems locating the part and I was getting a run around about it. I would call and they would not call me back for a day or two. Then I was told they were aware there has been problems with this happening to the new Pathfinders and they had made a newer part for it that would not come apart. So they finally replaced the steering column with a new one and so far it has driven great. It was a bit upsetting to get a brand new car though and in only 5 months I was already having problems.

47 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Nissan Pathfinder

Failure Date: 04/29/2006

I bought my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder se new from the dealer. Within the first two months of owning the vehicle, I have experienced the following problems: the back of the passenger front seat fell off. I took it back to the dealer who said there were broken clips. They ordered a new seat-back and installed it. A week or so after this, there was a rattling sound coming from the rear of the vehicle when the rear air was on full-blast. Took it back to the dealer. Dealer replaced a finishing clip and resolved the problem. During this visit to the dealer, I also pointed out how the steering wheel felt loose. They said they couldn't see a problem. Being that this "loose" steering wheel was becoming annoying, I brought it back to the dealer. This time they said they have had complaints with the steering. A tech confirmed my complaint and are now ordering a new steering column.
