1 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2018

I noticed oil in my driveway. However, I was unable to locate the source initially. The last incident I returned home from work. As I was about to leave, I noticed more oil on the ground. I started looking under my truck again. This time I found excessive amounts of oil on the rear driver side tire. I took my 2005 Nissan Titan to the repair shop. Upon completion of their inspection, I was given a copy of Nissan's service bulletin reference #ntb10-032 2004 - 2008 Titan, rear axle seal leaks. Their listed required action is to "install the new axle shaft assembly---which includes a new retainer, axle bearing, oil seal, bearing cage, and abs rotor---listed in the parts information table". Immediately below action is a note which states "do not replace the entire rear axle assembly for this incident, if it should occur". I contacted NHTSA who then referred me to Nissan @ 800-647-7261. Once in contact with Nissan, the representative asked for the last six numbers of the VIN, placed me on hold, and after a few minutes she came back and referred me to my initial point of contact. This should be a recall, not just a service bulletin. It would be very tragic to hear of a fatality as a result of a faulty product. Reading the many reviews from Titan owners it is evident the part is a defect and should be treated as such.

2 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2018

The axle shaft on the front differential came out causing failure to the front differential.

3 Axle Shaft problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

In 2005 4 months after I purchased the Titan, I was involved in a minor rear end accident that dented the rear bumper. 2 months after the accident and the bumper was replaced I noticed seepage coming from the rear axle. I thought it was due to the accident and did not have the seals replaced. It was not. The leak has entered into my emergency brake system and it has never performed properly. On January 13, 2012 a loud noise from the rear end prompted me to exit the interstate where I noticed smoke and a burning oil smell coming from the axle. The bearings were replaced and I drove the truck for 20 miles and the truck broke down again. I reseached the problem on the internet and found many complaints regarding seal leaks and replacement of the axle shaft. I also found a 2010 service bulletin from Nissan instructing replacement of the axle shaft and associated components. I have 200,000 miles on my truck and it has performed relatively well, but I have an issue with Nissan for not addressing the issue and risking my familys' safety for 5 years before issuing a safety bulletin.
