Six problems related to other fuel system tank mounting have been reported for the 2005 Nissan Xterra. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Nissan Xterra based on all problems reported for the 2005 Xterra.
Check engine light came. Gas gauge reads empty even after you fill it up completely. Diagnostic code p0463, fuel level sensor. The fuel gauge does not accurately state the amount of fuel in the tank. This issue is known to Nissan and NHTSA. It is a safety issue as you never know how much gas is left in the tank or how many miles you can go. This was previously recalled for certain 2006, 2007 and 2008 Xterras. Not sure why it hasn't been for the 2005 model year as it is the same issue.
Fuel gauge registers empty to arbitrarily amounts of remaining fuel regardless how much fuel is actually in tank. Ongoing problem to date.
After fueling the car, the fuel level indicator either shows the tank as empty or a random level (never full, although the tank was just filled). The level from then on is always unreliable and fluctuates at random levels; there is no way to know what is the level of fuel in the tank at any time. I am afraid that the car will run out of fuel without me knowing and stop the car in the middle of a highway or while crossing train tracks. This happens all the time, the indicator never shows full when I fill up the tank. It shows empty or 1/4 full and then after a couple of days the level goes up to a level that I know it is too high for the amount of driving that I have done.
My 2005 Nissan Xterra's fuel gauge stopped registering the correct amount of fuel in the gas tank. I recently ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection and had to push my car to a gas station in order to fill up. I've found that this is a well known problem, and recalls have been ordered by Nissan, but my specific VIN was not included in the recall. My mechanic has checked the error codes and agreed that this is the identical problem described in Nissan's similar recall.
I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra with 45k and the fuel needle goes to "e" and then fluctuates up to half then goes down again. The "service engine soon" light is on all the time. I can't tell what my fuel level is because it is not reading correctly. Even when the tank is filled up, the fuel needle reads empty! I have run out of gas on the freeway and had to contact a tow truck service for fuel. I have had the vehicle diagnosed and it would cost me $567 for the part (fuel sending unit) not including labor. I will not pay this ridiculous amount as I have found out through other Nissan Xterra owners that they are having the same issue. I have found this out through an internet discussion forum. There should be a recall for 2005 and newer models of Nissan Xterra's.
1. Normal use of vehicle. City driving mostly. 2. Fuel gauge needle does not correctly show the amount of fuel after initially filling up the gas tank. After some minutes of driving, the needle correctly shows a full tank. Then after about 3/4 fuel level, the needle drops back to empty. Additionally, the digital gauge does not accurately compute fuel miles left and mpg. This behavior repeats each time the fuel tank is filled. Without these functions I am unable to determine how much fuel I have left in the tank. Leaving the possibility for being stranded somewhere, if I do not accurately guess at how much gas is left. 3. Nothing was done (yet) to correct the failure. A mechanic told me it the problem is probably caused by a malfunction fuel sending unit/sensor. I have also confirmed the diagnosis on x. Nissanhelp. Com. I am awaiting to determine if these vehicles could be recalled by the dealers and/or Nissan, as it appears many people are having the same issue.
