Nissan has had a great # of fuel sensor problems with their line of vehicles. This is a well documented fact . My fuel gauge failed a few weeks back and now reads empty all the time despite filling the tank up. The fuel sensor problem also loads a code which causes the check engine light to stay on- not a good thing if you need to get a state inspection done. Nissan has ignored mine and many other requests to fix this problem. With a sensor that does not work or reads gas levels falsely due to faulty parts Nissan is putting or has put in it's cars this is putting the driving public at great risk. Accidents could be caused due to running out of fuel when you thought you had enough because of this faulty fuel sensor.

Noticed check engine light on dash was on but detected no issues and unemployed so didn't run down to Nissan to pay them $600 to turn out a light. Needed TX inspection sticker about 4 days ago went to get one at nearby jiffy lube and they denied because of "safety or emissions issues" on a code "p0463:fuel level sensor circuit high input". I got home and researched and found that is was quite common problem with Xterras and pathfinders. So common in fact, that previous generation Nissans were actually recalled for a similar issue. The sensor is in the gas tank and only checks the accuracy of the gas gauge. Unfortunately, no recall has been placed on the part for the 2nd gen yet, and so Nissan customers are being forced to have the dealer make the repair to the tune of about $600. What a racket. And without the repair I can't get my inspection sticker, when the worst that can happen is to run out of gas because the gas gauge may not show the correct level in the tank. My gauge is working fine. Since when is even a possible gas gauge problem a "safety and emissions" hazard anyway? racket. The guy at jiffy lube told me it might be sending to much gas thru the engine. What? a blatant lie. So apparently, the system has it that this unemployed person, with barely enough to survive has to either risk a big costly ticket for no inspection sticker or line Nissan's pockets with money I need to feed my family for a faulty part that they have even recalled the prior version of already when my vehicle runs good as it ever did and the gas gauge is working just fine. This is just wrong on so many levels and an injustice and apparently, you folks are the only ones that can bring justice to this situation by forcing them to recall that part they can't seem to get right before they rob more good americans of their limited resources in the racket they have going.
2006 Nissan Xterra VIN# 5n1an08u46c558708. My complaint is probably the most common with the Xterra. The fuel level sending unit. When I refuel vehicle the gas gauge needle does not move to the full line. Iinstead it stays on empty only after driving appox 30 to 40 miles will the needle move back up to the full line but also at the same time the service engine soon light comes on. That will stay on for appox 3 trips of using vehichle before it goes back off. I was told 2006 Xterras were covered under this recall however my VIN number was not. Makes no sense why some 2006"s are coverered and others are not. To me you either bought a 2006 Xterra or you didnt. I bought a Nissan because I thought I wouldnt have these problems I thought that was with non foreign vehichles , boy was I wrong. Nissan step up tp the plate and take care of this issue which so many many customers are having instead of turning the cheek.

I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra. Recently I filled up my gas tank and the service enginesoon light came on and the fuel gauge did not register full. After some time driveing it slowly raised to full and a while after the service engine soon light went out. I just filled up again. The level was just below a 1/4 of a tank and now with a full tank it reads below empty, the service engine soon light is on, the empty fuel tank light is on and the gauge is not raising as it did the previous time. After dooin some reaserch on line I realized I am not the only one with this problem and that it is obviously my fuel sending unit. Two weeks prior to this I had a 60000 mile service performed at Nissan where they found no problems with my vehicle.

The contact owns a 2002 Nissan Xterra. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the cause of the failure was the fuel sending harness which shorted and caused the plastic fuel line to melt and started a small fire. The contact called the manufacturer who took a complaint and stated that they would review the problem. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 138,000.

Went to the gas station to full up my Xterra. When I started it back up the gauge read 1/4 of a tank. I went back through the line and got only $1. 00 more worth of gas before the attendant said it was completely full. Over the day the gauge started to creep back up until it read full. One day later the service engine soon light came on. Took it to knecht's to hook it to the diagnostic machine. Came back error code po463 "fuel level sensor a circuit high input. " apparently this has happened to numerous Xterra and pathfinder owners around the 44000 mile mark or the 57000 mile mark. My Xterra just turned over 44,000 miles.
Details of problem: vehicle indicates that gas is remaining in tank(ie. Fuel indicator registers that 1/2 tank is remaining, when in fact gas tank is empty. Internet search has revealed that this is a very common complaint of Nissan Xterra owners (2006 through to 2008) and that the company has been installing a faulty fuel sensor in their vehicles for an extended time period. This poses a serious safety hazard on our freeways when the problem first shows itself. (ie. The potential for vehicles stalling out on the freeway due to the uninformed owners lack of awareness that they are running on an empty gas tank!) my attempt to address the problem: I discussed the problem with Nissan consumer affairs north America, and Nissan canada. I discovered that the company has issued a recall of specific vehicle #'s in the 2006 and 2008 product line. My internet research into consumer complaints about the problem indicates that this specific complaint is much more widespread than Nissan is willing to admit. I inquired with Nissan canada (Wednesday, July 14) to see if there was another avenue through which I could refer this safety problem to Nissan, but the receptionist assured me that I had no further recourse.
Fuel system, gasoline- I called the Nissan consumer line and gave them the information in regards to the fuel system issue. They stated that initially that my vehicle wasn't part of the recall based on my ven# for my 2007 Xterra. However, they had me go thru the steps of going to a certified dealership to obtain a diagnostic to confirm that I was having the same problem. After all the work done on this end, Nissan stated they would not be responsible for cover the part. . . Even though it is a known issue with their cars the cost is min $400 and I do not have those type of funds readily available as a single mother. I recently ran out of gas on a major highway with my two kids. Blessed that I was able to pull over in a timely manner without causing an accident or being in one. Nissan needs to take ownership and responsibility for their cars as this is a safety issue and can cause damage to the driver and their family as well as others.
Many Nissan 2006 Xterra's recalled for fuel sending device not working, in other words, gas gage does not work. I was told by Nissan that they are keeping records of thoe not recalled, may be future recalls. Fuel gage does not work. Their sonsumer complaint line said stick a stick down gas tank line to see if have gas, ridiculous. How do I have the same problem and not qualify for recall.
My 2006 Nissan Xterra's fuel sending unit has a problem, which results in (a) car does not register full tank of gas after fill-up, (b) occasional (once per 8 fill ups) "service engine" light comes on, which resets itself after several engine starts. This happens immediately after gas tank of filled. Service at ferman Nissan in tampa has given me response similar to another owner of this make/model (quoted below). Since problem with fuel sending unit can result in sudden stop of engine on highway, I think it should be recalled. I experienced my first occurrence of this problem at 39,500 miles, and this is in line with what other owners report. (39k~49k mile range and after 2 yrs). "I had 1/4 of a tank of gas and went to fill up. After filling up my gas tank, I turned on the car, at which point the needle did not register the full tank. After driving a couple miles, the check engine light came on. I went directly to the dealer and was told that it was a fuel sending unit/sensor and that it was no longer covered after 30k miles. After returning home and doing research, I went online to x. Nissanhelp. Com after performing a search, I came across many others who have experienced the same problem. Apparently it has something to do with the fuel sending unit. A similar problem was found on the 2000-2004 Xterra models and a recall was performed when the vehicle would stop after not getting any fuel, posing a great danger. It seems that something in the unit is faulty and will corrode over time. There is a general consensus that everyone who is having the problem is experiencing the same thing after having the vehicle for over 2 yrs and with around 39k-49k. If this problem existed in previous models, and it was recalled, the 2005-2007 Xterras, frontiers, and pathfinders should get this fixed at no charge to the customer!! why wait for accidents and possible deaths, especially since the problem lies in an integral part of the vehicle. Cost of repair ranges from $300-600. ".
I have a 2007 Nissan Xterra with 14k miles. Fuel gauge does not register when tank is filled up. Occasionally as driving, my tank will be completely full, but the gauge will shoot down to empty and cause low fuel light to come on. This will also trigger the check engine to come on. The engine, at times, as also acted as if it is about to stall due to being out of gas. . . Which it is not. My mechanic, whom I have used for many years, has informed me that this is a fuel line sensor in the gas tank after running the codes during trying to get my vehicle inspected, which failed due to check engine light being on. This seems to be a problem for a number of people with this vehicle.
While pumping gasoline at the gas station gasoline splashed on the driver. Consumer drove the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. However, mechanic was not able to duplicate the problem.
