7 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 12/28/2010

My wife was driving her Nissan Xterra when the vehicle engine suddenly died in traffic in a multi-lane street with heavy traffic. She had to get out of the car and, with the help of our son, push it off to the side of the road to clear the street. The failure was found later to be a bad fuel pump and bad fuel sending unit. The vehicle was towed to a repair shop that did the diagnosis and isolated the fault to those two components. They replaced the fuel pump and sending unit, as well as the fuel filter and strainer. During the conversation wtih the repair shop (not a Nissan dealership) they mentioned that there was a Nissan recall out for the sending unit, and that I ought to be reimbursed by Nissan. When I contacted Nissan they told me I could not be reimbursed because the recall / repair had already been done on this same vehicle in 2005. If the recall was done correctly by the dealership, this item should not have failed when my wife was driving it.

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed the fuel pump would need to be replaced. The fuel pump was replaced. The failure and current mileages were 70,000.

10 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

Summary: 2005 Nissan Xterra fuel gauge reading empty when full and slowly rising back to the correct display level then dropping to mid-level displaying incorrectly. Service engine light comes on and stays on sometimes turning off and on at odd times. This event happens everyday and I have now relied on the tripometer to tell my fuel level. Prior events leading to malfunction: I was driving on a 9 hour long trip during winter. I was about 4 hours into the trip and my fuel gauge oddly dropped to empty so I filled up but no change occurred. On the way up it started to work again so I figured it was a fluke and trusted the gauge. My car stalled about 8 hours in and I had to wait in the cold for 2 hours for aaa. Repairs made: no repairs were made but I have looked for quotes on the repair and I keep getting different answers to the problem. One said the fuel gauge sensor needs to be reset (200 dollar fee) and another said the fuel pumps need to be replaced (700 dollar fee). Similarities to common recall: the issue I have is so common to the NHTSA campaign id number: 10v075000 recall. This recall is on the 2006 and 2008 Nissan Xterra, frontier, and pathfinder. It involves: the molded fuel tank shells can deform, causing the fuel sender float arm to contact an embossment molded into the tank shell causing the instrument panel fuel gauge to show that the vehicle has approximately one quarter tank when the fuel tank is empty. I have no doubt that we 2005 Xterra owners are having the same issue, and online that is the consensus. Thank you very much for your time and work resolving this issue.

11 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

Fuel gauge showed 1/4 full and the car stopped with no gas. Filled up from a container brought by my daughter and drove to the gas station to fill up. Tank full and the gauge shows empty with the empty light on and then the ses light also turned on. Took the car to get a reading of the codes and comes out has fuel pump sender unit which controls the fuel gauge. The solution so far is to control the gas using the mile counter. Concerned about the possibility of the pump stop working while driving. 2006 Xterra. 44k miles.

12 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/20/2009

I was driving down the highway at 65 mph when my engine died. I cruised it to the side of the road and attempted to start it again, but it would not turn over. I could smell gas. After having it towed, we initially determined fuel pump failure. Once the repair was initiated, we found that the wire to the fuel sending unit was corroded and had heated up enough to cause a pea size hole in the plug. After some research I found that there was a recall for this exact failure completed on my vehicle in 12/2004, but instead of replacing the unit, they only sprayed sealant on the wire (because no corrosion was found) to prevent corrosion in the future. We replaced the sending unit, fuel pump and fuel filter. The old part is still available for inspection. I am filing a complaint with Nissan. I am not the original owner.

13 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/15/2009

The fuel level sensor on late model Nissan trucks and sport utility vehicles fails and reads an empty level after fill-up. The manufacturer knows of this recurring problem and has issued a technical bulletin ntb07-069a to inform its technicians of the procedure needed to correct the problem. This failure occurs without warning, and remains constant until corrected by the manufacturer. The technical bulletin describes the repair procedure needed to only replace the sending unit, and not the entire fuel pump. Failure to correct the problem could potentially lead to vehicles stalled on congested highways due to improper fuel level readouts.

14 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/05/2009

2005 Nissan Xterra. At 40000 miles it is common for this model to have the fuel level sensor fail. This can cause disabled vehicles due to vehicles running out of gas. This is a common problem with this model vehicle and the manufacturer is aware of the problem but refuses to assist or even warn owners of the potential problems. Nissan recalled 2001-2003 models for the same issue, but continue to use the same faulty part. Nissan or a mechanic must removed the gas tank to get to the fuel pump and the fuel level sensor. It even requires a special tool to remove this unit. Total cost of repair between $550 & $600 for a $90. 00 part.

15 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

I own a 2005 Nissan Xterra and recently my fuel gauge has been reading 1/2 tank full, then out of no where, it drops to empty. Upon refilling the tank (15gal worth) the gauge remains on empty w/ the "check engine light" on. After some driving the gauge eventually returns to the proper location, and the process continues every time. I've read a few discussion boards on the subject and it seems to be very common on Nissan SUV's and alot of complaints concerning the fuel pump/sending unit.

16 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

Hi I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra. These vehicles are having major problems with the fuel sending unit, located in the gas tank on the fuel pump. The symptoms are that one day out of the blue, with low miles on the vehicle, the gas gauge stops working or becomes inaccurate. On the odb ii, it shows as po463. Nissan will not cover and this is unsafe, as you have to "guess" by mileage how much fuel is left. Mine went out and I fixed it myself as I was concerned with safety of running out of fuel at a bad time.

17 Fuel Pump problem of the 2006 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/13/2008

I purchased this Xterra in may of 2006. In the past 8 weeks I have had to have my 06 Nissan Xterra towed to the dealer six times for the same issue of not starting. The first time I was told I was out of gas. Since then, I've been told the security module had gone bad, I had corrosion on the battery terminal causing it to go in to stolen mode, the fuel pump had gone bad (replaced twice), and the wiring harness to the fuel pump had a short in it (replaced twice). The dealer says they have not been able to replicate the problem and want to give me my car back without actually finding out the real issue. This is my family vehicle and I do not do any towing or off-road with it. Prior to these issues, my transmission went out at 11k miles and left me stranded on the side of an interstate for over 3 hours while I waited for a tow truck, and have had to have the fuel gauge sensor, catalytic converter, and tire pressure sensors replaced.

18 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 10/04/2008

The contact owns a 2001 Nissan Xterra. The vehicle was taken to be repaired under a recall. The remedy was performed by silicone spray being sprayed over the strap sending unit, which rests on the fuel pump and indicates how much fuel the vehicle is using. After having the vehicle repaired, while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly stopped. The contact feels that this is a safety issue because a crash could have occurred. He feels that the repair was not fixed properly, but covered up instead. He would like the repair work investigated. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 92,000.

19 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 08/08/2008

Same fuel gauge problems other owners are complaining about and the lack of support from Nissan. Ours would read empty and low fuel light comes on below 1/2 tank of gas. Took it to a Nissan dealer and $741. 00 later the fuel sender/fuel pump was replaced. This is my wife's vehicle and I would hate the thought of her being stranded thinking she had plenty of fuel and it runs out of gas. I guess Nissan does not think of this. There should definitely be a recall on these fuel senders and issue some kind of credit or check for the owners who have already had the vehicle repaired at their expense.

20 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 07/26/2008

This vehicle has a faulty fuel gauge, gas tank, fuel pump. . . Whatever! this is the 3rd gas tank and fuel pump for a 2005 model! the first time, after a few months of ownership, was covered by warranty. Now after less than 3 yrs ownership, we have the same problem and we have to pay almost 600. 00! out of warranty. This is extreme maintenance for the same problems/parts on a 3 yr old vehicle! Nissan should pay for these parts.

22 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 06/13/2008

The gas gauge reads about 1/8 of a tank and my truck runs out of gas before the low fuel light comes on. They fixed the problem each time but then a few weeks later I ended up having the same problem, the diagnosis was the fuel sending unit they replaced that and they also replaced the fuel pump on the last 2 occasions. I have had this problem 3 times since 06/13/08 the most recent time was on 07/23/08.

23 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 05/14/2008

The contact owns a 2000 Nissan Xterra. The contact stated that his son was driving the vehicle and it would stall after he filled it with gasoline. He drove for approximately five miles before the stalling began. The ignition would not start, but there was no significant loss of power. He took the vehicle to firestone and they performed an engine diagnostic test and found that the fuel sending unit was defective. The dealer stated that the fuel sending unit was included in NHTSA campaign id number 04v230000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump). The contact was informed to take the vehicle to the dealer to have the repair made for free. The dealer performed a diagnostic test, verified the defect, and replaced the unit. The dealer then called the contact and informed him that the vehicle was not starting, and they would have to change the fuel pump. The manufacturer stated that they would not pay for the fuel pump repair. He was referred to a representative, who stated that they would get back with him if they planned to assist. The contact was later informed that due to the mileage on the vehicle and because the fuel pump was not the same as the fueling unit, they would not make the repair. The speed was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 150,700 and failure mileage was 150,129.

33 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 02/06/2004

2001 Nissan Xterra - I was just getting off a busy rt. 95 and my car just turned off - no power steering, etc. I was luckily able to coast to the side of the road without causing an accident where I had to leave it overnight. Called two Nissan dealerships the next day and they were unable to fit me in for two days, so I needed my Xterra fixed so I took it to an independent auto shop. They said my fuel pump sending unit shorted out which in effect shorted out my fuel pump, both were replaced - $962 later. . . . . I took it to the dealership and they were well aware of the problem (I showed them the Nissan faulty part) and they referred me to Nissan consumer affairs. I spoke with someone there and she investigated the problem and said they weren't in the position to reimburse me b/c the work wasn't done at the Nissan dealership, she didn't know when there would be a recall. . . . I would've had a greater chance of getting my money back if I took it to the dealership. Regardless, in the end I paid $962 for a faulty Nissan part which hasn't been recalled and has the potential to cause many fatal accidents - go figure!!.

34 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Nissan Xterra

35 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Nissan Xterra

Failure Date: 01/12/2004

While driving to work, engine suddenly slowed & then stalled - would not restart. After towing to a local service station - I was told it was the fuel pump. The vehicle is no longer covered under warranty so I had to pay to have it replaced. This is the third fuel pump that has been installed on my vehicle. In September of 2001 it happened for the first time - again breaking down in the middle of the road. I was told by the service station that this is a known problem with Xterras? I don't want to be replacing my fuel pump every 2 years/20,000 miles - my truck currently has 94,000 miles on it.
