Nissan Xterra owners have reported 4 problems related to noises during shifting (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Nissan Xterra based on all problems reported for the Xterra.
I had brought the Xterra to the mechanic on may 4th for intermittent vibrations ( which I attributed to the rough roads s/p winter as it occurred at the same points on the same roads ) over 2 month and a new intermittent thumping noise heard when the vehicle was shifting gears in the last 2 weeks. Nothing came up on the computer system showing any issues other than the known alert for the gas level part that shift the bed 6 months ago and I refuse to pay $400 for a $40 part that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle, ( another issue Nissan is aware of as it comes up on the computer to the mechanic that this a known defect but won't replace it free of charge) end result, transmission fluid and radiator fluid were mixing due to a known issue by Nissan and defective parts. There is no recall. The radiator and transmission cooler needed to be replaced costing over $1600. I have read on complaint websites regarding this known issue and I am aware this cost is much less than what other Nissan owners have paid as some customers have needed to replace their transmissions or have needed to junk their vehicles as Nissan refuses to take responsibility and suck up the cost to fix this significant mechanical problem on their vehicles !!!!!.

The contact owns a 2006 Nissan Xterra. The contact attempted to shift into reverse however, the vehicle produced a loud noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was informed that coolant leaked into the transmission. He was then advised that the transmission needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

For several years there has been a "rattling" noise and the vehicle has had a problem shifting gears at times. The dealership told me that they didn't see anything wrong (of course this is the same dealership that forgot to put the oil cap back on after changing the oil one day). Finally the transmission just broke. I was driving down the road and heard a horrible scraping metal noise and my car basically just lunged forward. It seemed to stay in 1st gear but wouldn't go into any other gear including reverse. Thankfully I was less than a block from home and was able to park it in front of the house until I had it towed. I had it towed to don irby's transmissions llc (the best transmission place in town) and they rebuilt the transmission (re4r01a). I know that the 2000 Nissan Xterra's had a recall on the transmission and I really wonder if/why mine wasn't included. . . Because I really do feel that this has been an ongoing problem. My Xterra drives like a new car again! it hasn't driven and performed this great in years!!.

: the contact stated while driving 20 mph down a sloped driveway, the vehicle stalled. As a result, the brakes and power steering system failed. The dashboard lights illuminated while the vehicle was descending. The contact attempted to put the vehicle in park, but there was a grinding noise. The vehicle was shifted back to drive. The parking brake was engaged but there was no tension. The vehicle rolled to a stop. The dealership inspected the vehicle, but was unable to determine a problem.
