Check engine light came on then when I filled vehicle with fuel fuel gauge went to empty and low fuel light came on. Guage does not come back on u til vehicle is driven from 85 to 125 miles and then takes awile to reach up to around 3/4 full. Never really sure how much fuel is in tank. Was advised to change the fuel tank cap and did twice but still not working. Have to rely on trip guage to know if I have enough fuel. This seems risky for an almost 75 year old woman.

May 2012. I was driving the vehicle to work, the day the "service engine soon "light initially came on. 30 minutes later, yellow fuel indicator light came on, vehicle was not out of gas, had approx. 1/2 tank. I was concerned about the fuel light, so I immediately drove to a nearby gas station and filled up to a full tank of gas. Afterwards, fuel engine light remained on and gauge still showed empty. Only after driving it for several days, fuel light finally went off, service engine soon remained on. Since this initial incident every time I put fuel in the vehicle, the tank still shows empty and takes several days of driving to show where I filled it up. I recently took the vehicle for a diagnostic test and it showed problems in the fuel sensor/fuel pump. I also visited my local Nissan dealer and they said, that I was not turning the gas cap enough after fueling up. I always ensure that I turn the gas cap several times at least 4 turns, until several clicks are heard when securing the gas cap after fueling. I am sure this was not the problem. I am very concerned as I drive a good distance to work, on graveyard shifts. This is the 1st major problem, I have had with my Nissan Xterra and unfortunately it does not show as a recall. I feel unsafe driving the vehicle as I do not know when it will run out of fuel particularly on freeways and busy intersections. I often have small children as passengers and this concerns me the most.
I went to a gas station to fill up my 2006 Nissan Xterra. It said I had about a quarter of a tank left, I put in 40 dollars worth of gas and when I turned the car back on the gauge still said 1/4 of a tank. I parked the car turned it off, checked the cap and then turned it back on, it still said 1/4 of a tank and then the service engine soon light came on. I googled the problem when I got home and found hundreds of other people have had the same exact problem with the same exact circumstances on cars from Nissan from the same model year. The part costs 600 dollars to replace.

I have a 2005 Nissan Xterra. I went to the gas station to fill up my tank when the pump clicked off I put the gas cap back on until it clicked. I proceed to start the Xterra and noticed the gas gauge did not move. Finally after driving 45 miles the gauge moved to the full position. I thought this was a one time occurance but it proceed to happen again and this time the check engine light came on. Doing reseach on the web I found this to be a common occurance on 2005 and beyond Xterras. Having made appointment with the dealer to get this fixed it appears that I will have to get fuel sending unit replaced at a cost to me of $600. Upon further research I found that a recall was done on 2001 - 2004 Xterras for the same problem at no cost to their owners. I fee that Nissan has not corrected the problem and that this recall should be extended to Xterras made beyond 2004. In today's economic environment every dollar counts and paying for something that was not corrected is unecessary.
