1 Structure problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/15/2010

Trim around the windshield of a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero popped out of place, and I tried to put it back in place. Everytime I got up to a fast speed, it would come back out and start flapping and hitting the passenger side window. Finally, it came completely off while driving on the interstate.

2 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

When I first bought this car the backseats were not attached to the car. The dashboard is pealing up all the way and the paint is gone from my gear shift. Both driver side and passenger windows have stopped working. The driver side I had to get fixed for inspection cost about $300. Tires and brakes need replaced constantly. Lights on the dash light up for no apparent reason. Blinkers don't work most of the time and when they do it is this horrible loud clicking noise. Cd player/radio stop working randomly. Ac only works on 3rd setting. Rear defrost does not work at all. Fog lights will not turn on and bulbs are brand new. Trunk will not open with button from inside car or keyless entry. My trunk randomly comes open for no reason and once would not latch to shut for a few days but then randomly latched shut. Car leaks water in the front and back. Recently my car won't start everytime it rains. I took it to an auto place and they ran it through the computer and couldn't find anything. Now it's at a windsheild place because the mechanic says its leaking water into fuse box. Glass place is saying that is not it either. I am at my wits end. It dries out and will start and as soon as it rains will not start. I don't want to pay another mechanic to have this fixed. I see where others have complained about fuses and waters leaks. I have had it towed twice in the last 2 weeks and had $600 worth of work done on my car. I cannot afford to buy a new car. I'm very aggitated that so many people have complained about this car and nothing has been done about it. I even complained to the bbb about the dealership I bought it from to no avail. Why is nothing being done?.

3 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/24/2009

About a year ago I pushed my hazard button and it fell back into the dashboard. So now there is a hole there and I cannot use my flashers if needed.

4 Structure problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/27/2006

The dash had begun pulling away and coming unglued about 2 years ago. I found that this is a problem with this model year. When I spoke with the dealer they said it was not part of a recall. But they would split the cost with me -my end would be $650. I could not afford it and it has continued to rumple and bubble up. I am the only owner. It is a defect that no one wants to address. Especially, since my warranty will be up with in a month or two. I just got tired of fighting with the dealer to do something. I have given up and will not be purchasing a gm car again. Thanks for nothing -my loyalty is going somewhere else.

5 Structure problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

Purchased 2003 Alero in 2004, 2nd one (I loved the first one), with 32k miles. Vinyl over passenger airbag was peeling - dealer fixed at no cost - now in 2010 it peeled off completely. At 39k had to replace the ignition cylinder. One of the front drivers side window bracket broke - waiting for the window to fall into the door. At about 50k the turn signal clicking starting without using the signals & is still do it today. I have not tried to fix it because I have read so many thing on the internet about cost & that it was recalled on older Alero models. It has finally gotten to the point that the signals only work part time and I have to turn on the hazards to get the turn signal to work - accident causing I think so. The plastic around the gear shift that lights up at night now gets hot enough to hurt if touched. I am very disappointed that gm won't help so many people that have put money and faith in their product. I think gm just doesn't want to deal with the olds products. If it was a problem then and there are so many complaints now then it must still be a problem. I personally will not recommend a gm vehicle to anyone and will be going back to Ford.

6 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 10/10/2006

I own a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero, have had no problems so far except the dashboard vinyl peeling up, and the particle on the vinyl backing flake off and recirculate through the car in the a/c. This is a problem with a lot of these cars that I did not notice until now. Gm should fix this problem since they used glue that was not strong enough to hold the vinyl down!.

7 Structure problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/25/2006

Service vehicle soon, trac off light, and abs light took to dealer, out of warranty, private repair shop, cost-$500, grinding noise before lights turned on, dinging, lights went on, it was sensor in left front wheel bearing. Also have replaced front rotors, alternator at 65,000 miles. Key fob doesn''t lock drivers door. Hood on car replaced in 2006 under warranty because of blistering 2002-water leak onto drivers floor, 5 times to dealer, replaced side door gasket, problem had to be solved by replacing windshield gasket. I'm afraid of all these complaints about turn signal failure and hazard light failure and the car just quitting. Trading in this piece of **** as soon as paid off.

8 Structure problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

The dashboard of my 2003 olds Alero is buckling and peeling in several places. I am trying to obtain proof of other similar problems that anyone else has had. Gm has been of no assistance to me.

9 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 06/04/2006

In the last six months three out of 4 windows on my vehicle are now held up with duct tape so that they don't fall into the channel and I can't get them up. Luckily, only one of them managed to do that and a friend managed to get it back up for me. That occurred at the end of January 2006. I could understand one- maybe- but three!!! no. This is definitely a safety issue. I suspect the only reason that my one working window, the back passenger side, is still working is because I haven't tried to put it down- or the result would be the same. I am sure that is going to be expensive to repair, so I guess I'll go with the duct tape for a while. I have also had a problem with the intake manifold, the gaskets on that were replaced in January, 2006. I was losing antifreeze from the overflow tank, and having to fill it every day. Took it to the dealer, and they found the water pump leaking and the intake gaskets leaking. They were replaced at my expense. And. . . The intermittent turn signal is also a problem. That has been going on for about a year now. It should be recalled for that, like you did for the 2000- 2001 vehicles. The vehicle has 70,000 miles on it. The interior trim on this vehicle is shoddy, and that is being kind. The car was purchased brand new with 23 miles on it when we got it to our house in June, 1999. In less than a year a door panel had to be replaced because it had come apart. The dashboard has been peeling for about 11/2 years because they used cheap glue to hold the covering on the plastic. I realize that you consider that cosmetic, but it shouldn't be happening: I check every Alero I see in a parking lot and there are a lot with peeling dashboards. Gm should be responsible for fixing that- they caused the problem. Gm caused multiple problems on this vehicle by doing it on the cheap. It is very costly to the people who own them, and it shouldn't be. I don't mind paying for routine repairs, I expect that, but these problems are not "routine".

10 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/20/2006

Have had the heater resister replaced twice and the blower motor once. When going to a professional mechanic to have a third resister installed (less than a month after the second and 13 months after the first replacement), he said that water was leaking down through the windshield into the blower motor, melted a 30 amp fuse and shorted out the resistor. The mechanic said this could have caused a fire under the dashboard of the car. The blower motor encasement was drenched with water.

11 Structure problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

2003 Alero ignition shorted causing consumer not be able to start vehicle, also found a leak in intake manifold gasket. The passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder shorted and as a result the vehicle would not start. The intake gaskets and oil drive o-ring leaked. The dealer replaced the lower intake manifold gasket, rocker cover gaskets and oil pump driveshaft cover seal. The air bag cover warped. The top of the dash was wrinkled and the instrument panel pan was peeling from it's backing. The dealer replaced the instrument panel assembly and transferred all components.

12 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/01/2005

The vinyl on my car is falling off the dashboard and the side panels of my vehicle. These are common problems with Oldsmobile Aleros, of which gm takes little responsibility. There should have been a recall on this due to all the numbers of complaints. It is impairing my visibility while driving. I contacted victoria at gm, case #1-358478228 - the best she could do for me was 30% off the repair price of $1,900, which would still equal $1,330 + tax. This is unacceptable - it's probably more than the car is worth at this point due to the defect in workmanship. I then contacted david at symdom Chevrolet, but he was not able to get any more satisfaction from gm. I then contacted brian at burtness Chevrolet. He spoke to his rep, but I still have had no response from his rep. I don't feel this is an expense I should have to pay for even though it's out of warranty. It's an obvious defect on that particular color and type of vinyl/leather. The other colors of the vinyl/leather are fine. There's hundreds of complaints on the internet - no one that knows would ever by an Alero! the least they could do is take responsibility for it. If this isn't resolved, I don't think our family will continue to buy gm cars - we have 4 in the family right now, and have always bought gm. No wonder gm is having so many problems - there's no customer service.

13 Structure problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

Top of dash is wrinkling and coming apart. I have seen this problem on other Aleros also. I know this is an appearance problem ,but it is still a problem. Will it affect the passenger's air bag in the dash if peeling reaches the area?.

14 Structure problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

2001 Alero gl had problems with the computer, cruise control, and the floor was leaking. ** answer required***. The vehicle consumed excessive amounts of gas, the vehicle only got 208 mile per tank of gas. The rear defroster works intermittently. The abs light, traction light and service engine light illuminated at the same time. When this happened the vehicle lost traction and abs brakes. On two occasion this failure caused the consumer to lose control of the vehicle. The rear seat slid forward when the brakes were applied abruptly.

15 Structure problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 11/28/2004

In September 2004 I purchased a used 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. By November my Alero's interior door panels started to bubble and buckle on 3 doors. My vehicle is still under the bumper to bumper gm factory warranty. I brought my car to brown (dealership) in saco, maine and was told to call gm to see if I could get the work approved. They denied the work and said they didn't cover "cosmetic problems". I then filed a complaint with the better business bureau. Someone from gm who handles the bbb cases called and said once again there was nothing they could do for me. This time the said the problem was caused by the previous owner. Before my case went to arbitration gm requested the bbb to send out a technical expert to look at the car. His conclusion was inadequate adhesive. Not long after the report came out and before arbitration, gm called and informed me that they will fix my Alero. They told me I must go to brown in saco, maine where kevin brady (service manager) said he still refuses to fix the car. I called gm back and they said to find a dealership that will do the work. This problem seems to plague thousands of Alero owners from what I have seen on the internet. This is a factory defect that gm must own up to!!!.

16 Structure problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 11/05/2004

Beginning in November 2004 the consumer began to have problems with the electrical system in the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. When the vehicle was purchased the air bag light came on. The consumer was concerned that the air bag light will cause the air bags not to deploy in case of an accident. Also, she was concerned that the air bags would deploy when there was no accident. The vehicle has been to the repair shop 6 times due to brake problems. . When the vehicle had 20,000 miles it had to have the rotors turned and brake shoes replaced. The brakes were still making a humming noise. The dealership could not figure out why the vehicle was having problems with the air bag light or with the brakes. The cruise control, door panels, windows were inoperative. The transmission or front axle seal was leaking, the blinkers were blinking too fast, the windshield was leaking, the carpet lining was coming out of the trunk, the engine made a knocking noise, the back trim around the seats didn't fit properly, the ignition switch was replaced, the fuse box was replaced.

17 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/29/2004

I purchased a 2000 Alero that currently has approximately 52. 000 miles on it. Almost overnight, almost a month ago from today, the dashboard vinyl buckled, waved, and started pulling away from the dashboard. At this same time, the turn signals began to intermittently stop working completely. I have found numerous web sites where other Alero owners have had the same issues. I realize that the dashboard is cosmetic and not a safety issue. However, the turn signals are a problem. Gm will not recall the Alero even though they have a history of serious defects that have nothing to do with owner neglect. Gm should be forced to recall this sad excuse for a car. I'm complaining to you specifically because I feel as though no one else will listen to the hoards of Alero owners with the same problems.

18 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

There are a number of problems I have had with my 2000 olds Alero GLS 4dr. The main concern is the interior dash and door paneling bubbling than eventually starting to come off. My sunroof will not open as well.

19 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 10/04/2003

The dashboard material has come unglued and shrunk. The dealer said it cost $900 to fix. I contacted gm to tell them about the problem and they told me they could nothing about it. I have since seen 5 other Alero's with the same problem. I am writing another complaint letter to gm after seeing other similar reports on this website.

20 Structure problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/01/2003

I took a long road trip vacation this past summer. The 2002 Alero turned over 36,000 miles before I got home. I didn' t drive the car for a few days upon my return. When I opened the door a few days later, the glue had come unglued from the leather on the dash and three of the door pads under the windows and the leather was buckled very badly. . Read more...

21 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/30/2003

Dash material is pulling away from the base, air bag cover is coming off of the dash. Dealer states that it will cost over $300. 00 to repair.

22 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 06/25/2003

When it rains, water leaks through the vent and into my vehicle.

23 Structure problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

I have had my 2002 Oldsmobile Alero since 2002. Within six months of having this car the ignition switch went bad and was unable to start the car and it had to be repaired. This was repaired by the dealer that I purchased it from because the company that was in charge of my extended warranty went bankrupt. Since then I have had to pay to replace a gasket in the engine that keeps engine coolant and engine oil from mixing together because the gasket that was manufactured with the car was not the right thickness. (since this is a known defect by mechanics why wasn't this recalled or a service bulletin initiated?) I continue to have problems with the driver door control panel that controls the windows and the side mirrors and window locks. The windows in my car can only be controlled by the driver because the window lock is stuck in the "on" position. I have also had problems with the windows falling down into the door and have had one window replaced in December 2007 but now in September 2008 the passenger window is experiencing the same symptoms and now will have to replace this window as well. Right now the most annoying thing about this car is the turn signals. They function as they should but the clicking noise for the turn signal will not turn off when I have made a turn (it actually makes a clicking noise about 3 times as fast as the regular turn click). I have had this looked at by a mechanic and I was told that this was not part of the hazard light recall which my car falls under so it was not fixed. It is a very distracting problem and the only time I can get relief from the clicking noise is when I actually get ready to make a turn by turning on the actual turn signal. There are a number of problems that numerous owners are experiencing. I am hoping that some thing is done about the windows and the engine gasket. I don't think consumers should be responsible for poor engineering and design. Gm should make things right.

24 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

The leather cover dashboard starting bubbling up in mid spring of 2003. Starting in may the dashboard starting peeling up. It has continually bubbled up towards the steering column and the passenger air bags. It is beyond warranty but we can't get any response from Oldsmobile.

25 Structure problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/01/2003

Leather on front dashboard and back passenger door is detaching from surface and bubbling. It is rather severe on the front dash. Cigarette lighter (one near front passenger foot) was poorly installed. It pops out all of the time. Front end makes loud scratching noise when moving slowly or breaking and turning. Drivers side window stopped working today. It went out without warning. Trunk smells like there has been a problem with water leaks. I've found interior trunk to be damp on occasion. Occasional water leaks on front passenger side (at feet). Appears to be condensation of some sort. Back cup holder pops out of place. Because of the defect, drink spills resulted in stained carpeting.

26 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 03/12/2003

Consumer stated the dashboard material peeled. The consumer stated the material peeled by the passenger side air bag. The cruise control did not work and both driver side windows motor broke.

27 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/15/2003

Within my 36,000 of driving from 50,222 to 86,119 my intake gaskets have been replaced twice. My rack has been replaced twice and will need to be replaced a third time. I am also aware that the rack was replaced while the previous owner had the car. Recently I realized why water was getting into my passenger side of the vehicle. The window seal is shifted causing the window to leak if the car is parked at certain inclines. This repair is not covered by my pre-owned vehicle warranty. All major repairs have been covered by my warranty and any additional costs have bee quote "eaten" by repair facilities.

28 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/09/2003

My 2000 Oldsmobile Alero has had serious problems with it since purchasing it in June of 2002. To date, I have had to replace my waterpump, intake manifold gasket, tires, brakes and rotors consistently (three or more times ayear) . The most recent problem is my gas gauge will indicate that I have 1/4 tank and to my surprise the car will not start unless more fuel is added. The engine also sounds rough, I have both service engine lights on, along with my low tire pressure, anti lock brake light on and I have new tires, replaced a gas cap, and the lights went off, but then come back on. I am also positive that my car will not pass inspection. The cosmetic defects are that of the dash board starting to peel and come loose. I have read up on that gm responded to a problem with all 2000 Oldsmobile Aleros about the gas problem and I contacted the dealer dorschel and spoke with service manager lou, gm agreed to add a different filter so that the gas was draining back into the tank, it was also mentioned in the article that dealers could be fined thousands of dollars daily if not complied with, but because it was not an actual recall, the dealer denied my request to fix. After reading the multiple complaints about these vehicles, I am shocked that they have not been recalled, the should be as they are not safe cars in my opinion. I am challenging you to take a ride in my car with your family and see if you feel safe, because not only am I out 13,000 that I paid for the car, but also if I have to estimate probably another 6,000 in repairs. That is ridiculous. I expect a written response from your office within 30 days of what you intend to do to investigate these problems. Not only read my letter, but you should google in 2000 Oldsmobile Aleros and see the disgust of performance people are complaining of.

29 Structure problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 03/01/2002

Both doors were leaking in rain and in the car wash. I took it to the dealership where it was still under warranty because I purchased a 100,00 mile bumper to bumper warranty. They could not find the leaks. It continued to do it and still couldn't find the leaks. Now it is leaking so bad that both back floor boards have standing water in them after a hard rain. They are also now water damaged.

30 Structure problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero
