2 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 06/11/2008

Anti-theft system on my 1997 olds Cutlass comes on frequently and will not allow my car to start. In researching this issue I see there are literally 100's of complaints regarding this very problem. Gm should be made to fix the issue by completely replacing the defective part with one that is more stable. This problem started out only happening ever once in awhile, now it is happening daily. My only option at this point, is to disconnect the very feature that would prevent my vehicle from being stolen. Obviously, replacing the ignition or key is a short term fix as the new part also becomes defective in a very short period of time.

5 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 08/12/2006

I own a 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass and I have been having problems with the passlock anti-theft system on this vehicle for some time. Sometimes when I try and start this vehicle, the theft system light starts to blink on and off. When this happens, the vehicle can not be started for at least 10 minutes. This is very frustrating as it usually happens at the worst of times, like in the cold winter weather, at a gas station, or in a loading/unloading zone at a hotel. Sometimes the theft system light will come on while driving and then I wonder if the car will start when I am ready to leave again. I have read many stories about similar problems that other gm owners have on their vehicles, so I know that this is not a random problem that affects only some people. This is a problem that needs to be addressed by gm. I have had the ignition switch replaced once on this vehicle, and this will be a very expensive option if I have to do that again. Is there anything that can be done about this? the date listed below is the most recent date that this happened. It happened twice last week when we were out of town on a trip at the worst of times.

7 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

Theft system continually overrides the system and will not allow the vehicle to start. Is has not yet caused the vehicle to shut down on the highway but it does pose a threat to do so. I have also talked with several other owers of the same type/division(cutlass and malibu) of vehicle and they all report the same problem. The local gm dealer says that it is just a problem with my vehicle but so many in the same area with the same problem?.

8 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 09/15/2004

1. Car running perfectly fine. 2. One day, car wouldn't start and theft system light was flashing. 3. Went online and found a bunch of complaints about the passlock system. It said to wait 1/2 hour and the car would start again. So we wait, and it starts. This is extremely inconvenient. We rely heavily on this car.

10 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 03/04/2004

The instrument panel intermitently failed to show any check/warning indicator light when the ignition key was inserted at the off and on position. The ignition also failed to start the engine even with the presence of clicking noise. If the ignition was successful, the engine could suddenly die unexpectantly while running in the garage or on the highway -- without showing any instrumental failure indicator signs in either case. The processes repeatedly occurred unpreditably during the past few days but the dealer could not duplicate similar failures as reported while the vehicle was in the shop for checking-up.

11 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 08/05/2003

Anti-theft controller disables the ignition periodically for no apparent reason. Requires the driver to wait 15 minutes before the system resets and allows the car to start.

12 Anti-theft Controller problem of the 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Failure Date: 06/08/2003

Theft-light came on for no apparent reason. Had to wait ten minutes for system to reset before starting car. Had key-lock cylinder replaced twice, for a total of over $1400 in repairs. Now the light is on seemingly permanently. Always wonder if it will start or not. Can't get anyone besides a dealer to even look at it. The dealer has enough of my money for now. . . I have to deal with being inconvenienced regularly by this problem.
