Horn Assembly Problems of Oldsmobile Cutlass

The contact owns a 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The contact stated that the horn failed. The dealer stated that the repair would cost $800 because the horn and air bag assembly were connected. The vehicle was repaired, but the manufacturer did not assist. The failure mileage was 54,000 and current mileage was 68,000.

While driving and with no warning will push the horn, but horn will not go off, causing consumer to have distractions while driving. Dealer notified.

Consumer had fuel injector replaced, electrical testing was done on vehicle due to engine check light alert, the next day the vehicle would not start. Vehicle was checked by dealer who determined that battery was not disconnected during testing which caused wires to burn into steering column. Consumer very concerned because horn was not working. Also had an exposed wire in the steering which was a potential shock hazard. Consumer states he is now experiencing other problems related to the electrical problem such as the air conditioning light coming on and the air bag system failed.

Car lights slowly went out on drive home. Antilock brakes went out, power steering went out and finally all the lights went out and vehicle would not start. Replaced battery-horn wouldn't work and light continued to come on. Took car to the dealership-reset computer-now day running lamps don't come on when start the car on-they only come on when the car is in drive. The airbag senor is also out. This all occurred at 37000 miles.

The design of the horn is such that a specific section of the steering wheel center has to be pressed. When in an emergency the center portion is hit with the flat hand the horn is not activated. Since in an emergency situation the steering wheel is likely to be turned the area to be pressed to actvate the horn has been shifted.
