My 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue has always knocked sometimes when I turn steering wheel. I was told by an Oldsmobile dealership that was normal. At 57,000 miles I noticed it became very hard to turn left. It just became worse. Right hand turns were easy but left turns took lots of muscle and I could here a slight grinding. Dec. 2003 I had a new rack and pinion put on car. Looking at this sight, I am not the only one with a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue with this problem. Had to fork out the $$$ because of course it is not under warranty anymore!.
While making a hard left turn driver would hear a loud clanking noise under the floorboard. Steering wheel would lock up. Consumer would have to make either a soft left or right turn to unlock the steering wheel. Dealership informed the consumer that the problem was due to rack and pinion failure. The problem had not been resolved.
I currently own a 1998 model year olsdmobile Intrigue (VIN 1g3wh52k9wf356340) that continues to have a severe clunking and at times difficult steering usually at lower speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer shortly after purchase for the same complaint on 10/05/98 but the issue was never resolved and we were told this was normal. I have recently taken over driving the vehicle from my wife and after driving for a couple weeks it seems much worse and a possible safety concern. A friend of mine who is a trusted technician diagnosed the problem as most likely a failure in the rack-and-pinion steering. I will be taking the vehicle in either to Oldsmobile or third party to have repaired but wanted to log my complaint. Hopefully gm will understand this is oem defect and help repair my vehicle. I have found there have been multiple tsbs (010232001b, 051101 & 01232002) on this issue and there is currently an investigation to extend a recall for the possible same issue (NHTSA recall campaign number : 02v286000).

I recently read an associated press article in the paper about an investigation into a steering defect in the 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue among other cars. I just had to have the steering rack replaced because of difficulty when steering left. This was the same problem listed in the article.
Vehicle steering failed. Car could turn right but would not turn left. Steering gear had to be replaced at owners cost.
The rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The consumer stated most of the time the steering will not turn, she was in an accident because the steering wheel failed to turn.
Became extremely difficult to make left turns, particularly at low speeds. Brought car to local garage, they thought there was a recall for this rack & pinion unit. Brought car to gm dealer (hove Buick) who confirmed this was the rack & pinion unit that was being recalled, but my VIN was not yet covered. Hod to have rack & pinion unit replaced (by local garage). Contacted gm/Oldsmobile customer service, they confirmed there was a recall but my VIN was not covered even though it is the same make, model and year as cars that are covered.
Consumer complained about rack and pinion steering problems. A recall was issued on this make, model, and year, however this vehicle was not included due to VIN.
The rack and pinion steering has had to be replaced twice on this vehicle. Steering suddenly becomes very difficult to turn to the left (as if no power steering at all). If you are turning to the right you can easily turn the vehicle, however, left hand turns are impossible. The dealership making the repair agreed to pay 1/2 of the cost because they agreed the part was faulty and never should have happened the first time let alone twice. Gm, however, refused to pay for either of the repairs and would not stand behind theirs .

Clunking in rack and pinion steering system. We have had this problem looked at three times under warranty and fixed two out of the three times. Multiple complaints to Oldsmobile customer service and each time they do not take responsibility for the problem. There was a recent recall on the 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue, but when I called Oldsmobile they said that my car was not part of the recall.
While driving the vehicle at any speed the power rack and pinion (steering component make noise). See 8870 ES-02-003 and 8746 ea-01-038, dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.
Rack and pinion sxteering failed prematurely under normal usage, crest Oldsmobile service manager said that 60,000 miles wasn't considered early failure. The crest general manager told me to call Oldsmobile customer assistance. The customer assistance person told me that without the crest service manager's o. K. , he could do nothing. The repair cost was $1449. 00.
I complained to the dealer that sold me the car but of course that fell on deaf ears. My wife, infant son & I were driving at approx. 35 mph when I turned right I could not pull it back to the left without using brute force. At that point I just had to pull over & call a tow truck. I'm just glad I was driving at the time & not my wife who would not have been able to recover control of the vehicle. Needless to say I am very upset that a 1998 vehicle or any newer vehicle would have such serious safety issues. I sincerely hope your department resolves this with gm. Not to mention the $1000. 00 in repair costs.

About I month ago the steering began being very difficut to turn to the left. It begins from a parked position and continues after the car is in motion. It is as though the car does not have power steering. It actually is more difficult to turn left than a standard steering(no power steering) vehicle. I worry about having to make a sudden left turn to avoid an accident, depending on the circumstances, I may have a problem. I have not had any accidents or driven over any bumps or holes that could cause this problem. I have never seen a car be this difficult to steer to the left. I saw a newspaper article by nedra pickler that promted me to check your website. Please advise ASAP what I should do.
Experiencing problem with the power steering whic make it very stiff and difficult to turn. The problem was the pump and possibly the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.
I have had multiple failures of the front rack and pinion streering gear and related components. Each repair has lasted an estimated 12,000 miles until returning. The symptoms are a banging noise at low speeds while turning with some loss of control. During the last failure period, I allowed the situation to continue to see if it would worsen and it indeed has. The present estimate from the dealer to repair the problem is $1,500. Previous repairs had been done under warranty. I drive an average of 500 miles per week at hiway speeds and am greatly concerned about my safety.
Rack and pinion steering went out at 50,000 miles. Also, consume r feels that this should not happen, and that Oldsmobile should pay for it since vehicle is only 3 years old.
Consumer states that steering: gear: shaft pinion failed. Rack and pinion was replaced, gm offered to split the cost, however consumer did not find this acceptable.
While driving power steering gave out, and consumer ended up running into a field. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything. Rack and pinion assembly locked up could not turn.
I think the rack and pinions failed due to manufactor flaw so far the third one on car is holding up.
This is the third time that the steering rack and pinion needs to be replaced on this car. In talking with the service department at leidy's in mifflintown PA, they mentioned that they have been fixing numerous olds Intrigue's steering racks. This appears to me to be a manufacture defect that needs to be addressed before serious injuries or fatalities occur. I no longer trust this car to be reliable and would not recommend it to anyone looking to buy.
Vehicle had ongoing problem when the steering wheel was turned there was severe grinding and knocking noise that could be felt all the way to the floor. Dealership indicated that this was normal characteristic of the steering rack and pinion. Alloy wheels on vehicle began to peel causing tire to loose air replaced on 8/10/04 at a cost of 313. 00.
Steering rack has a clunking sound when when first moving car & turning the steering wheel plus is hard to turn. Parking lamp socket failed causing bulb to melt & fuse melted plastic inside of socket, which will not allow a replacement bulb to be replaced, bulb fails to light up for turn signals. Air conditioning is poor at best, will not cool car down.
Vehicle has been at dealer seven times for noise in the front end. The dealer has replaced the intermediate steering shaft, the rack and pinion and has tightened the control arm and front struts. Manufacturer has been notified. Ak.
This car has had thirteen garage visits under warranty so far to either diagnose problems or correct problems. Tomorrow, it will have the intermediate steering shaft replaced for the second time by holmes Oldsmobile to correct a popping sensation in the steering. Other repairs in this regard have been replacement of the control arms and the steering rack. The front brake rotors first warped last year and were turned on 08/19/98; they warped again and were replaced on 12/10/98. On 6/11/99, this second set for the frontwere turned again along with both rear rotors due to warpage; this is grossly excessive. I understand that Oldsmobile has discontinued these brakes as an option (labelled "autobahn" ) because of quality problems. Please investigate this situation for me as both the steering and brakes evidence of durability problems do not instill confidence.
After car sitting, then starting put car in gear there is a popping/clicking in front. I have had new front rack put on, had them check cv joints, and struts. I have taken this car back to the dealer many, many times they can not find the problem. I took a mechanic (not dealer) and he suggested checking the caliper hardware and brakes. I am at my wits end. Now my rotors have the deep groves and was told by dealer the could not locate the problem!!! is this car a lemon?.
When making turns or going around curves it feels like the front wheels are loose which could cause a loss of vehicle control. Dealer has replaced lower control arm twice and rack and pinion once, but defect keeps reoccurring.

While driving the vehicle the steering system malfunctioned. The steering had a "clucking noise" and then the steering moved freely. Then, after a minute or two, it resumed its steering. There has been about 10 attempts to have steering problem corrected pump & rack has been replaced and still have a problem rear brakes warped dealer refused to fix would do only front defective pitted rotors under warr. Problems reported when first purch. Car steering is a danger wanted to return car too many repairs and not fixed.
Customer believes rack and pinion steering has a design flaw which causes the steering wheel to shake when braking, a clicking noise in the right front wheel when turning and pulling to the right. Nlm.
