This car has had many small problems. Many electrical problems in the air conditioning. The transmission had to be rebuilt at 78000. The biggest problem is in the steering. The intermediate shaft wears out after about 20,000 miles. I am about to have the intermediate shaft replaced for the third time. The first was taken care of by the warranty. The second came out of my pocket and now I am about to have it replaced again.

Consumer states that while driving the steering wheel locked up. Unable to turn wheel, almost caused an accident. Contacted dealer. Mr.
The consumer states that the steering wheel feels very loose. The vehicle had been taken to the dealer and they replaced the steering shaft, problem reoccurred and it was replaced again. The consumer feels that the part was poorly designed. * scc.
The contact owns a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. While driving at any speed, the steering wheel would suddenly lock for 3-4 seconds and then unlock. The contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure. The vehicle has been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 136,537 and failure mileage was 63,536.
Bought car oct 2000 as a used auto. Immediately had problems with it. Has been in shop for each of these 4-5 times at least. It has a vibration in the steering system. Midshaft was replaced, but it returned. Olds did say they would attempt to fix this. Ordered a new intermediate shaft, but they could not find what was actually causing this problem. Been also in shop for lights flickering, heater surging, temp gauge running hot. Alternator was replaced after a 3 week stay at the dealer. This problem returned 3 days before midshaft was to be replaced the 2nd time. Called dealership that was going to replace shaft, and decided to hold off until we could settle this with olds. Olds is not trying to rectify easily. I am reporting this to better business bureau at this time.

Steering is numb. Lower shaft was replaced by dealership mechanic. While making a turn there are cracking and banging noises.
My 1999 Intrigue has had the steering shaft replaced two times and lubed two times. The first time it was replaced the dealer put on the paperwork that it was replaced "due to poor design". Now the last time I took it in and they just lubed it. They said that gm is saying that it is a maintenance problem and that it will happen again and I will have to start paying for it ($110. 00 plus tax). I have owned many cars and never have I owned one that had to have the steering shaft lubed, much less lubed on a "regular basis". Anybody with half a brain knows this is not a maintenance problem, this is a design flaw. I also know the problem is in some of the other gm models. I was reading some of the consumer complaints on your web sight and was surprised to find out that some of these steering shafts have actually broken and the car could not be steered. This concerns me alot. Just how save is this car? does someone have to die in an accident before anything is done about this problem. Please check into this and please have these cars recalled. There seems to be a big problem with this. Everyone isn't going to take the time to write you guys and complaint, some people will just trade them in. On your web page alone there were at least 83 complaints about this problem on the 1998 models and 24 on the 1999 modes. I just want someone to let me know if this has been checked out and if my car is safe to drive. Right now I don't think it is. Please feel free to call me with any questions you have. Thank you, teresa smith dt.
Steering wheel spun out of control. Yh.
Car exterior and interior lights will dim and then brighten while driving at night. Seems to act up more in colder tempertures but is still acting up in warmer weather. Fan speed for air & heater will flucuate. They have replaced the altenator but it didn't correct the problem. Also having probelms when starting up the car. Acts like it is "missing" but no engine check light came on. Dealership tried running a fuel injector fluid through it but hasn't corrected the problem.
When making a turn, you can feel a quiver in the steering wheel and brake pedal and hear grinding. When releasing brake, it makes noise. Steering seems tight, had car in for repairs numerous times to no avail.
While driving the vehicle the steering system malfunctioned. The steering had a "clucking noise" and then the steering moved freely. Then, after a minute or two, it resumed its steering.
