Tank Assembly problems of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager - part 1

My 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager Mini-van 3. 3 liter v6 2 wheel drive broke down. Apparently in the transport, loading, or unloading of the vehicle on my trailer, one of the muffler mounts became disconnected and the other muffler mount the bolt into the frame was pulled out. This caused the muffler and exhause to shift. I did not notice this prior to operation of the vehicle after performing the initial repairs that caused the breakdown (water pump / serpentine belt failures). The shift of the muffler caused my fuel line and gas tank to melt and devoloped leaks. The level in the gas tank was low enough that no gas was leaking; however, the fuel line was spraying gasoline on the underside of the vehicle and on the hot muffler. I consider myself fortunate that I did not have a fire in the event. I have yet to repair either of these leaks, and I intent to take photos prior to repairs. I did have to move the muffler to find the leaks, and that is the only work I have done at this time and I will not be driving the vehicle until the leaks are repaired. This could be applicable to other Grand Voyagers that pass over a large objects that could strike the muffler (I. E rocks, curbs, etc. ).

When filling up fuel tank could see a fuel leakage on ground. Could not see where it was coming from. Had contacted dealer. Please provide more infomation.

Nhtsa recall#00-v-268-000. Consumer received the recall letter beginning of March. Dealer doesn't know when the part will be available.

After making stops consumer could smell a fuel smell. Had vehicle serviced, technician could not find cause. Consumer noticed fuel pouring out of fuel tank while vehicle was parked in driveway down hill. Fuel tank was leaking from seam near the top of the tank, dealer replaced the tank.

After the technician brought to the consumer attention, that he smelled gas, they took the vehicle to dealer. Dealer determined the fuel tank vent lines were full of gas and the rear gas tank vent and canister was leaking, therefore recommended a new fuel tank. But they declined the fuel tank replacement at this time. Consumer stated that, since there have been two recalls on this fuel tank already, #665 and#845, consumer feels this recent problem is coincidental with the recall #845, and that the tank might be defective.

After the technician brought to the consumer attention, that he smelled gas, they took the vehicle to dealer. Consumer had front end problems since purchase, noise mostly. While driving 55 mph there was a loud bang, vehicle began strut housing bracket that holds the stabiliser link broke off, causing it to cut into tire. No flat. Struts had been replaced twice prior to this . Stuts have been replaced a total of six times as well as front coil spring, also when gas tank was full it leaked onto the ground fuel tank was replaced, steering makes a noise when turning, suspension makes a lot of noise, wheel bearing msking a nosie,rack and pinion was replaced, vehicle pulls to right,swayar links were replaced,clock spring was replaced,when a/c is on the compressor engages loud sound,windshield falling apart,rotors were replaced,intermittenly wipers turn on by themselves, engine makes a sever noise,stabilizer bar broke.

While filling up the gasoline pump to the full capacity inside of the gasoline tank. The gasoline will leaking from the pump the dealership is aware of the problem. Ts.

Fuel tank leaks fuel. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and dealer replaced gas tank. Vehicle was taken to the dealer 5 months prior to tank leaking for other problems, and at that time tank was leaking a small amount of fuel. After the 5 months gastank was pouring gas out. Currently, dealer does not want to admit that gas tank was part of the recall that was issued before vehicle was taken in.

While filling up vehicle it started leaking gas, just like it did back in Mar. 2000 when it was taken in for recall on fuel tank. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said it had nothing to do with recall, and that tank broke and needed to be replaced.

So many problems and no one is listening.

While the front transmission seal was being replaced, the mechanic warned me about the gas tank leaking gasoline. No visable puncture holes can be seen and the leak appears to come from the seem of the tank. He said this does not appear to be from normal wear and tear and to not drive the vehicle until repaired due to danger of explosion and/or fire. When michael stead Chrysler dealership in walnut creek was contacted, I was told on the phone there is no recall on the leaking gas tanks and that the leak is not related to the other recall on our gas tank assembly. We have also experienced the windshield wipers randomly comming on while driving. We had the switch replaced but the problem continues. Autoworld dealership told us that the manufacturer for the wipers has not made a replacement part to fix the problem and that if it was replaced we would just have the same problem.

The driver noticed gas under neath the vehicle after filling up because the fuel tank was leaking. Yh.

When braking, the driver starts to smell gasoline. Vehicle was taken to dealership & was informed by mechanic the fuel tank was cracked & was not under warranty.

Filled the tank with fuel the night before. Next day noticed odor. Checked vehicle & saw a large puddle beneath vehicle. Fuel gauge indicated a loss of fuel. Took vehicle to dealer & was told not it was not their fault that fuel leaked out. Mechanic checked fuel tank & noticed leak coming from seam at top of fuel tank. Parts would be ordered for fuel tank.

Seam failed on top of gas tank and allowed gas to leaks out when tank was full. This condition poses a major fire hazard. Manufacturer agreed to pay for the tank, but not for the labor to install the tank.

Chrysler knows very well that there is system failure in air bag "clock spring" in the steering wheel. Nhtsa should ask Chrysler for one simple piece of information: how many driver's side air bag "clock spring" replacement parts" are you selling? because Chrysler is selling tens of thousands, it is clear to any idiot that there is a manufacturer's defect in this important safety device. Chrysler has a similar problem with fuel tank sender device. They are all breaking.

While traveling along the freeway at approximately 60 mph, I struck a piece of metal debris. Upon arrival at my home 5 minutes later, I smelled fuel and observed that the fuel tank was ruptured. I took a photo of the leaking fuel tank, which I am able to forward via the internet as a file. Jpg if desirable.

Poor design of fuel tank which was built under /against the floorboard in the middle of the vehicle where gravel and road debris is rubbing, causing a hole in the plastic tank.

Fuel tank shows empty but will hold only 12 gallons of fuel. Now the guage is going haywire and alarming all the time now . Gasoline vapors .

Fuel tank was leaking all over driveway and garage. Took to dealership which could not find the problem. Took to a locally owned garage which said the fuel strap was cutting into the tank. Tank was replaced at a cost of $493. Major concern with leaking gasoline into my garage which also contains a gas water heater which could have ignited my home.

Fuel tank was discovered to have a crack in seam. Leaking fuel. Strong gas smell within vechicle. Dealer replaced fuel tank at cost to customer.

When I took vehicle into the local Plymouth dealer to have the problem looked at, the service manager commented that this was the third gas tank that had to be replaced in the past two weeks. The gas tank on our minivan developed a crack and the gasoline would leak out onto the driveway and also would fill the occupant area with gas fumes. I do not believe that I caused this gas tank failure -- I would like to you look into the possibility of a recall.

Fuel tank leaks. Gas puddles on the ground and can smell fumes in the van. One Chrysler dealer told me it was the rollover valve in the tank, another said it was the filler tube. Chrysler refuses to fix the problem at their cost.

When the fuel tank is full, fuel leaks where the fuel pump assembly is attached to the fuel tank. The problem has been reported to the dealer. The problem has not been corrected.

Fuel tank has "bowed" or warped due to stress caused by a failed or misaligned mounting assembly.

Fuel tank leakage causing fumes. Mjs.

Fuel tank is leaking gas. The tank has been replaced at consumer's expense. Dealers are aware of the problem and cannot duplicate the problem.

Transmission failed at 86000 miles, windshield wiper problems, a/c failed 5 times in the last 4 years.

Fuel tank is leaking after vehicle was rear ended. The damage to the vehicle was minor and should not have cracked the tank.

Fuel gauge light keeps going off with a full or 1/2 full gas tank. Also when putting vehicle in reverse, a hard knock would appear in front of vehicle . Dealer notified, and unable to locate/correct the problem.

When filling up gas tank it leaks from the top of the tank, and there is also a strong odor of gas fumes coming into the van. The tank is being repaired. Was told by dealer that the part is on a national back order.

Fuel tank was leaking fumes thru-out the vehicle.

Fuel tank failure.

December 96, consumer bought vehicle at hank martins warsaw mo. (816-438-5132) where it has been repaired 7-8 times, changing gas tanks and rollover valves each time. Whenever vehicle is driven for approx. 2-3 miles fumes begin to flow. When it is cooler weather fumes are worse; flow inside through vents, as well as through the window. Fumes are heavy when parking vehicle, filling the garage with gas smell. Sometimes fumes enter into consumer's home . Ea-97002, is the opening investigation number.
