2 Tank Filler Pipe And Cap problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2000

Following recall of fuel pump o ring we noticed a stong gas odor following each filling of the tank to capacity. Thought it was just from overflow. Finally took to dealer. Dealer reported vent breather tube cracked on top of tank. Had to replace entire tank due to the tube being molded into the tank. I agreed to have tank replaced, and then kept the old tank. Checked top of tank and could see that leakage occured, but not how. Vent tube was removable contradictory to what dealer stated. Tube not cracked. I filled tank and tipped it to put pressure on the vent tube. No leakage occurred. I'm worried that the problem wasn't fixed by replacing the tank. Now there is a new recall on fuel rail system. Mechanic at dealership said the new tank had a redesigned vent system on the top of the tank. I was charghed $789 to replace tank when tank wasn't the problem, and the dealers explanation of what was damaged was incorrect. It appears to me that there must be a problem with the vent tube seal, although it isn't apparent, or there is a lot of pressure building in the system somewhere, which causes it to flow out of vent to tank connection, although I couldn't get it to leak. If the new tank had a redesigned vent system, that tells me the previous vent system was faulty. Am I responsible for replacement if it was obviously a known problem? please advise what I should do. I'm worried with the new recall that the car may still not be safe. The dealer did not check the fuel rail system of this vehicle before I paid for the new tank on November 1. Thanks for your help!.
