The drivers side strut tower is rusting out, but not on the top like most of them do. 3/4 of the side of the tower is rusted and gone. The passenger side still looks good. I have gone to several shops but no one can help me. The vans 3. 3l engine and trans are still in good shape so I need to find someone or something to fix this.

7 Body problem of the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 11/03/2008

Discovered severe rust-through of the front left-side strut tower while doing routine fluid level checking. The damage is under the hood of the vehicle, and initially appeared as dimpled metal without any holes or gaps. The metal crumbled in my hand, and revealed the rust through as I picked away the pieces. I researched the problem on the internet, and found many identical problems, as well as the TSB from Chrysler: 2304402 (NHTSA 10000317). Several of the references had pictures that looked just like our vehicle. As the TSB notes, there is a special repair kit created and supplied by the manufacturer just to correct this specific issue. Although out vehicle has not had any collapse or other catastrophic failure, several of the owners had experienced severe problems as a a result of this structural flaw. The defect was described many times as a result of a manufacturing detail, where two single pieces of metal were layered to build the strut tower. The seam between these two layers of metal was not properly sealed, and as a result, moisture was allowed to enter the seam and corrosion inside the plate sandwich began. With the problem inside the metal structure essentially hidden from view, the metal decay could continue to advance without easy discovery. The TSB is dated nearly 2 years after the last vehicle date, with warranty coverage already expired. This is a serious structural and safety problem, and Chrysler is not offering to recognize the defect and fix this except at our cost. This manufacturing defect, as demonstrated by the unusual damage pattern as well as the special repair kit needs a safety recall to support owners and correctly assign fault.

8 Body problem of the 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

Metal fatigue-8 inch crack has been found by me on the drivers side where the mcpherson strut is connected to the body fender mounting area. I have never seen anything like this. Car has never been in a front accident and is garage kept. I have been the sole owner of the vehicle. If this crack continues this car will no longer function and have to be junked. I believe this is a Chrysler manufacturing defect. Chrysler should be completely responsible for its repair or alternate solution provided to me.

9 Body problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

Strut towers rusting out. Noticed this condition approx. 2 years ago when vehicle was less than 5 years old. Researching the problem, it seems many other Plymouth voyager and Dodge caravan owners have the same problem. Found TSB#23-044-02 which refers to this problem. Sudden failure of the strut tower could result in loss of steering and/or sudden stopping force applied on one side of vehicle as a tire impacts a wheel well.

10 Body problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

11 Body problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 09/13/2004

>> Chrysler did repair the strut at no cost and rented us a handicap van while ours was being fixed. At first (6 times) we were told we were out of warranty, end of story. So our handicap van was worthless. Once I uncovered a bulletin acknowledging the problem Chrysler's tune changed. Make : Plymouth model : voyager year : 1997 service bulletin num : 2304402 date of bulletin: oct 14, 2002 > NHTSA item number: 10000317 > component: structure:body they had already made parts to fix this problem. It is ridiculous I had to go to the extent I did to solve this problem. We were told that if the strut goes all steering is lost. So the public is at risk but that is acceptable to Chrysler. Instead of notifying all >> owners of the potential problem (about $300 to fix) Chrysler feels peoples lives >> are not worth the trouble. If there are any accidents caused by this >> strut >> failure , just document something could have done to prevent it. >> >> please forward this email to any agency that maintains a database of >> accidents. >>.

12 Body problem of the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 06/10/2001

Vehicle safety issue (Chrysler TSB 23-044-02), rust through of upper strut towers 1996-2000 Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth minivans. Collapse of strut tower would result one or more of the following: 1/ sudden change of steering geometry; total loss of steering; lockup of one of the front wheels, blowout of one of the front tires. This is a problem which Chrysler has known about for years. They only issued a TSB once most of the vehicles involved (96-98) were beyond the manufactures rust perforation warranty. This should not be merely a "service" recall, but a "safety" recall. This is due to a manufacturing defect which failed to seal between component panels allowing moisture to penetrate and cause hidden rust issue which reveals itself only when the structural damage is already done. The recommended repair is also questionable -- utilizing only epoxy to afix a cap to the top of the strut. The inner rust perforation is not cut out, only covered up. The treatment is primarily cosmetic. I am very concerned about this issue and feel it has not only endangered life, but devalued the vehicle. I have paid to have the problem repaired but feel that this should be Chrysler's responsibility. I would appreciate any follow up you can do on my behalf and that of other minivan owners. (I've no doubt that the vast majority are yet unaware of the condition of their vehicles. ) sincerely kelvin ironside mesa az.

13 Body problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 10/15/2000

Several items: no interior lights fuse is ok, psngr armrest fell off, windshield wipers occasionally cycle on their own.

14 Body problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 05/08/1999

The cup holder drawer was pulled out & there were coins in the coin tray. While the van was parked in a mall parking lot, the sun shone through the window and reflected off the row of nickels toward the ceiling. There was so much heat generated that the reflection acted like a magnifying glass and burned the ceiling console as well as burned a hole in the ceiling cloth. There are no warnings about the risk of this happening. For that matter we have had the van almost one year and have hardly kept the drawer shut. I would like to know if the Chrysler/Plymouth corporation will cover the repairs under the warranty.

15 Body problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 01/10/1997

Car leaks at drivers side during heavy rains. Delaer been unable to correct the problem. The carpet has been replaced. Car is now experiencing electrical defects as a result of a) the leak itself, or b) removing and reinstalling the dash on numerous occasions to try and find the leak. I am allso concerned about long term rust as a result of the continuing leaks. The car is not able to be sold now as a result of the leak and continuing problems.
