Failure of front strut towers on a 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager found upon vehicle inspection (safety issue). No incident occurred and the corrective action to be taken is the replacement of both front strut towers. Old part would be available if you request me to keep them. Please advise.

: the contact stated the strut tower had corrosion and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who referred the contact to a body shop used by the dealer. Upon replacement, the body shop mechanic expressed that there may be a recall on this matter. The dealer were was contacted, and determined the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The contact encountered many complaints on this matter regarding the suspension: front: macpherson strut. Updated 01/22/07.

1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager se rusted strut tower. Went to check my oil level and could not believe how bad the strut towers where rusted I could push down on front fenders and watch the struts push the surrounding metal up so I typed in google search engine 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager se rusted strut tower and to my surprise a lot of other people have this flaw in there vans to I cant believe I was driving my kids in this van with this problem I think the band aid that Chrysler is offering is pathetic this problem should be fixed right and not at consumers cost please push Chrysler to take care of there fault on this issue.
Strut mounts on 1999 Plymouth voyager se - VIN #2p4gp44g9xr188151
the strut mounts were deteriorating at a rapid pace and were rusting out to the point that they could break at any time, causing serious injury to someone. Upon noticing this problem I immediately took it into the dealer to have it fixed - to the tune of $1,500. I did a little research on the internet and found the following at the apa website: the apa website stated that the 1996 - 2000 models had rust perforation in the front strut towers (especially on the left side) in the area of the upper strut. It stated that the anchorage seems to stem from insufficient rust protection and the use of thin steel in this area. The mechanic who fixed the struts stated he has seen quite a few with this problem and wished more people would write in and complain. One particular customer was told not to drive his vehicle until he got it fixed as it was that bad. I contacted daimler Chrysler corporation about the problem and they basically said there were no recalls for this particular problem. Ford recently recalled some vehicles for a little bit of rust problem on the side of the truck, which in my opinion was only a cosmetic type of problem. The rusted struts pose a potentially dangerous problem and could cause serious injuries or death. I do not have the old part but I do have photographs of them before they were fixed. I would appreciate your immediate attention to this matter. You are my last resort and I hope it will do some good. This problem did not cause an accident for me. However, it might be something to check into the next time there is an accident with one of these vehicles. I appreciate your time and hope it can make a little difference. Thank you.

Strut towers are rusting and pose a safety risk of crash and/or rollover when struts eventually break loose from the strut towers.
The vehicle's front left strut corroded. The cause has yet to be determined. Please provide additional information.
1. Strut twer rusting out on driver side. 2. Could cause loss of control and steering if it gives out. 3. Will get strut tower cap from dealer and have it repaired. Chrysler will only repair if I pay $250 dedutable.
Rusty strut tower, driver's side.
Strut tower is corroded and 4 body shops said they would'nt attempt to fix. The following info was obtained by a gm dealership when we told them our problem. He did look up on the computer about bulletins issued regarding your problem. There was one issued on October of 2002 titled: suspension/body -strut tower corrosion #23-044-02. This means Chrysler acknowleges they have a problem! brief history, I am 36 with a wife and two boys who are 11 and eight. Both my wife and I graduated from michigan state university where I also got my mba. I have multiple sclerosis (ms). I went on disability in 1997. I am at about an 8. 5 to 9 on the disability scale. Zero being no symptoms 10 being dead. I am in a wheelchair. I have a feeding tube, a supra pubic catheter. I will be trying an intensive chemotherapy in the next two weeks. We are on a fixed income from social security and a long term care contract. I require nearly 24-hour care so my wife cant work. Our annual income is about $34,000. We bought a Plymouth Grand Voyager handicap van in 1998 for about $40,000. This week we had the oil changed. The mechanic said one of the two towers that hold the engine in place was rusted. He said to have a body shop look at it immediately. The body shop said they wouldnt touch it (pres kool). My wife called Chrysler and an arrogant, impatient customer service rep named jay said to take it to maaco (another local body shop). They also told my wife no way would they fix it. Every place my wife took it she was told the van had way more rust all over then a 1998 vehicle should have. Another mechanic said no way should the tower be rusted like it is. My wife called Chrysler again and spoke to erika who said there is nothing Chrysler can or will do. Our warranty is up so we are left with our only transportation being unsafe.
Consumer took the vehicle to the dealership to be inspected and the mechanic determined that the strut towers were rusting prematurely. The left side strut tower blistered/bubble. Extensive rust under the blistered paint area. The consumer was told that the rust had been there for a long time under the paint surface.
Mechanic advised the consumer that front strut tower frame was rusted ,and consume rneeded to take action immediately or front suspension would fall to the ground.
I have a "96 Grand Voyager with 82000 miles. The towers which support the front struts are both grossly rusted and fatigued. When the strut breaks through the tower it is inevitable that the tire will lock up in the wheel well causing loss of steering and vehicle control. I have contacted Chrysler regarding this and they say that there is no recall for this defect.
96 Plymouth voyager van with 80k miles. Both strut inside engine compartment are exhibiting major metal fatigue. Both strut towers are shearing away from main frame assembly. Dealer states that this needs to be repaired or front of van will collapse. This started to occur several years ago but dealer always stated that this was not an issue. In researching the web, I have seen other complaints of metal fatigue on the Chrysler strut towers. I can provide visual evidence if desired. Would like to have the NHTSA consider this as a potential safety issue. Please contact me and I can provide digital pictures of both strut towers shearing through main chassis frame.
When the vehicle was inspected, it was found that the right front strut tower was rusted. This could cause severe damage if it fell out. The consumer was told that this was a common problem with this vehicle. The driver's side (left) strut tower was starting to rust per technician.
Vehicle safety issue (Chrysler TSB 23-044-02), rust through of upper strut towers 1996-2000 Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth minivans. Collapse of strut tower would result one or more of the following: 1/ sudden change of steering geometry; total loss of steering; lockup of one of the front wheels, blowout of one of the front tires. This is a problem which Chrysler has known about for years. They only issued a TSB once most of the vehicles involved (96-98) were beyond the manufactures rust perforation warranty. This should not be merely a "service" recall, but a "safety" recall. This is due to a manufacturing defect which failed to seal between component panels allowing moisture to penetrate and cause hidden rust issue which reveals itself only when the structural damage is already done. The recommended repair is also questionable -- utilizing only epoxy to afix a cap to the top of the strut. The inner rust perforation is not cut out, only covered up. The treatment is primarily cosmetic. I am very concerned about this issue and feel it has not only endangered life, but devalued the vehicle. I have paid to have the problem repaired but feel that this should be Chrysler's responsibility. I would appreciate any follow up you can do on my behalf and that of other minivan owners. (I've no doubt that the vast majority are yet unaware of the condition of their vehicles. )
sincerely
