1 Strut Tower problem of the 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 03/25/2015

I' ve purchased a 1999 Grand Voyager and noticed that the driver side strut tower was rotting out and the passenger side was starting to rust as well , but not to the degree as the drivers side. . I looked up and found no recall this situation, but was informed that Chrysler ,Plymouth , Dodge , knew about this since 1996 but did nothing to correct it until 2001. I enjoy my vehicle but the repairs for this problem are a bit too much for me at this time due to my disability ,and the fact that I am on a very limited income. Is there any one that can assist me in getting my vehicle repair?.

2 Strut Tower problem of the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 02/02/2015

The drivers side strut tower is rusting out, but not on the top like most of them do. 3/4 of the side of the tower is rusted and gone. The passenger side still looks good. I have gone to several shops but no one can help me. The vans 3. 3l engine and trans are still in good shape so I need to find someone or something to fix this.

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

Front left strut tower rusted out.

7 Strut Tower problem of the 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

Left side strut tower rusted through on 1999 Plymouth voyager, I noticed this after we had bought it in 2005 and was told that it would not be covered from Chrysler, found out that I was not the only one this had happened too, Chrysler made the mistake and they should stand behind it, I was getting maintenance when it fell apart, lucky it didn't happen on the highway.

8 Strut Tower problem of the 2000 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

Front wheel strut towers rusted out; this is apparently a wide spread problem with Chrysler minivans. Complete rust out causes the front wheel to collapse.

9 Strut Tower problem of the 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 01/09/2009

The strut tower on my '99 Plymouth Grand Voyager has rusted out on the drivers side. My dealer has informed me that it is a safety issue and needs to be addressed right away. When looking on-line at this problem, many other people have the same issue. It seems that they should have a recall, or fix the problem.

10 Strut Tower problem of the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 11/03/2008

Discovered severe rust-through of the front left-side strut tower while doing routine fluid level checking. The damage is under the hood of the vehicle, and initially appeared as dimpled metal without any holes or gaps. The metal crumbled in my hand, and revealed the rust through as I picked away the pieces. I researched the problem on the internet, and found many identical problems, as well as the TSB from Chrysler: 2304402 (NHTSA 10000317). Several of the references had pictures that looked just like our vehicle. As the TSB notes, there is a special repair kit created and supplied by the manufacturer just to correct this specific issue. Although out vehicle has not had any collapse or other catastrophic failure, several of the owners had experienced severe problems as a a result of this structural flaw. The defect was described many times as a result of a manufacturing detail, where two single pieces of metal were layered to build the strut tower. The seam between these two layers of metal was not properly sealed, and as a result, moisture was allowed to enter the seam and corrosion inside the plate sandwich began. With the problem inside the metal structure essentially hidden from view, the metal decay could continue to advance without easy discovery. The TSB is dated nearly 2 years after the last vehicle date, with warranty coverage already expired. This is a serious structural and safety problem, and Chrysler is not offering to recognize the defect and fix this except at our cost. This manufacturing defect, as demonstrated by the unusual damage pattern as well as the special repair kit needs a safety recall to support owners and correctly assign fault.

11 Strut Tower problem of the 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 09/11/2008

The strut towers are corroding on 1996-2000 town & country/voyager/caravan Mini vans. Chrysler has admitted this in TSB # 23-044-02. I think the problem is more widespread. Anyway, my understanding is that, if the strut tower fails during operation, the result can be devastating. There are many young children riding in these vehicles, soccer moms etc. I find it incredible that there is not more visible information on this. I am the original owner of my 1997, and at the same phone and address as when I bought it. I have not been notified. I accidentally ran into this while researching for new struts for the vehicle. I looked at my vehicle and sure enough, one of the strut towers is failing. I called the dealer, the remedy is $500 per strut tower. If this isn't a classic design flaw (that is potentially lethal), I'm not sure I could find a better example. Two things need to be done. (1) information needs to get out, it's not happening. (2) Chrysler needs to absorb or at least share in the cost of the repairs. I believe if #(1) above were happening adequately, # (2) would have already happened. We need to set aside that the automakers are in trouble, and stop favoring them at the expense of children's lives.

12 Strut Tower problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

I own two Chrysler minivan that have rusted strut towers, and I took them to my favorite body shop. I have been told that almost every Chrysler Mini van has had this, and to go to the dealer due to a recall. There is no such recall, and was told by the dealer it has been a issue.

16 Strut Tower problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 05/10/2005

Strut towers rusting out. Noticed this condition approx. 2 years ago when vehicle was less than 5 years old. Researching the problem, it seems many other Plymouth voyager and Dodge caravan owners have the same problem. Found TSB#23-044-02 which refers to this problem. Sudden failure of the strut tower could result in loss of steering and/or sudden stopping force applied on one side of vehicle as a tire impacts a wheel well.

17 Strut Tower problem of the 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 04/21/2005

The left (driver) side strut tower appears to be split and rusting out, while the right (passenger) side shows no signs of rust. There is also no rust anywhere on the outside of the vehicle. There appears to be something defective with the metal on the drivers side. If the strut tower fails, I will lose control of the vehicle. I spoke with another owner with the same problem who works in a body shop. They have seen this problem on several vehicles. When I took the vehicle to the Chrysler dealership where I bought the car, they said there was no recall, but they had seen this problem before. I would like to know if the vehicle is safe to drive as is. If it is not safe, I feel that is a factory defect and should be corrected by Chrysler. I do have digital pictures of both strut towers. The dealer wants around $400. 00 to fix it and they will not tell me whether it is safe or not.

19 Strut Tower problem of the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

During some regular maintenance my repair shop noticed that the strut towers in my 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager were badly deteriorated and the the struts were in danger of pushing through the top of the tower and consequently the hood. This situation would have rendered the vehicle uncontrollable and presented a dangerous situation if I, or my children, was on the highway. If not hidden under the hood I would have noticed it some time ago, long before the warranty expired. Also this kind of structural failure should not occur in a vehicle this young and is indicative of a design fault. Chrysler has issued a TSB number 23-044-02 acknowledging this problem and has a repair kit for it. Clearly they are aware of the problem and uninterested in helping people with a design flaw that takes many years to develop. They will not help customers who have bought a defective product unless your agency forces them to address this issue and I urge you to do so.

20 Strut Tower problem of the 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager

Failure Date: 08/10/2004

My mechanic commented there was a serious problem with my two front strut towers. They had severe corrosion and the struts were pushing through the top of the tower. He was concerned when the struts pushed through I would have difficulty controlling my vehicle. I took the vehicle to my Plymouth dealer on August 10th 2004 (98,402 miles just over 6 years old). Chrysler refused to do anything about the problem. The corrosion is so severe that the metal is perforated and starting to tear. I work for a company that sells anti-corrosion coating (called electrocoat) and know that this problem must have been going on for years. If not hidden under the hood I would have noticed it long before the warranty was up. Had the part design been proper and the electrocoating done correctly this defect should not occur before 10 years. This is not an uncommon problem with my model. Chrysler issued a TSB number 23-044-02 ackowledging this problem for vans built from 1996-2000 and has a repair kit and procedure. If the problem is identified within the warranty period the TSB states it is reimbursable. I posted my problem on a message board and quickly recieved a reply form another owner with the same problem I have digital photos which I can send to you. I will save the defective towers which need to be cut from the body and replaced. The repair will cost $1350 and will be done in two weeks. The defect is difficult to see and many people may be driving with a compromised suspension and dangerous condition without knowing it. Chrysler seems unwilling to face up to thier responsibility in this matter and will likely do nothing unless your office does something to force them to address the issue or a disaster occurs because if it. Please look into this situation. If my van or the old towers can serve any useful purpose in your investigation let me know.
