SAAB 95 owners have reported 10 problems related to catalytic convertor (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
: the contact stated while driving 50 mph the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle coasted off the road without incident. It was restarted and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle would not exceed 35mph and was driven to an independent repair shop. The mechanic determined the ignition module had failed and was replaced. The vehicle was driven only 30 miles more when the check engine light re illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was determined the catalytic converter had failed. There is a NHTSA recall, 05v399000, regarding the electrical system: ignition module. The VIN was not included in the recall.

While driving to work 28 April 2006 my 2002 SAAB 9-6 b308 v6 engine car began sputtering and the engine light came on. I made it into the parking lot where I work then proceeded to call a SAAB dealership. SAAB dealership mechanic stated that the car's computer put itself into "lame" mode and that the car was safe to drive to dealership (15 miles away)and that it was probably an ignition module. I simply pulled car onto the parking lot and it sputtered to a stop/stall, smoke came from the hood and it wouldn't restart. I had the car towed to the dealership. After the car had arrived at the dealership I was notified by the dealership that the defective part was an ignition module. After looking this information up I find that this part was defective in and recalled in over 100,000 SAAB's from 2000-2002 however after calling SAAB corporate they deny that this part is recalled in my particular make and year. My make, model, engine type and year however are listed as recalled on several web sites including your dot. Gov web site. I had to pay $600 + dollars to have my car repaired and have the ignition module replaced as I need this car. After having the part replaced 2 days later the engine light came on; I immediately brought the car back to the dealership to find that they state the car now needs a new catalytic converter (as stated by the SAAB dealership) the cat converter was warranted for 8 years or 80,000 miles but has broken after the 90,000 mile mark. I feel that driving the car when the ignition module has gone bad may have damaged the cat converter (as stated can happen if driving car with bad ignition module).

Catalytic converter failure.
While driving 55 mph the 2000 SAAB 95 shut down. The vehicle was towed to a local dealership. The vehicle's ignition module was replaced. After repair the consumer learned that the ignition module for her vehicle had been recalled. The consumer contacted the dealer and was told that the vehicle VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle stalled again after the ignition module was replaced. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who decided that the catalytic converter failed and needed to be replaced.
I own a 2001 SAAB 95 se v6. Was driving down the NJ tpk and the car lost power and had a small electrical like fire under the hood. Had to get the car towed from the NJ turnpike off and then again to my place in bensalem PA. Total cost $77 + 66. Found out that the di cassette burned out, cost me approx $600 to fix. A day later the cat converter fails (check engine light came on again). This is certainly due to di cassette burning out. Very frustrating for a car with only 60k miles on it.

2001 SAAB 9-5, consumer has not received reimbursement for the recall work done on the vehicle. The consumer received a recall letter in the mail one month later, after the repairs were already paid for. When the consumer called to inquire about her refund, she was told by the manufacturer, that they didn't have all of the paperwork and also they didn't have her address. Nine months later, the consumer still has not received reimbursement. The catalytic converter was replaced.
While driving, the vehicle stalled without warning. No restart. Internal failure of cat. Converter, replaced cat. Converter. The problem was the r & r ignition module. After the ignition repair, the consumer felt a loss of power. The consumer was informed that the catalytic converter was clogged.
My 2001 SAAB 9-5 has just under 80,000 miles and has gone through 2 catalytic converters. It also burns out a lot of lights--headlights, tail lights, brake lights, etc. Every few months. Also the led display on the dash has a lot of pixels out. I'm wondering if the electrical current is perhaps a little too high and that could be what's causing all of the problems?.
Driving at 65mph in far left lane of highway and sudden loss of speed--could only go 20-30 mph for a few minutes before burning smell. Was able to come to right shoulder while dodging highway traffic. Direct ignition cassette (dic) failure 1 of 2 dic's in 6 cylinder engine). Second visit required for check engine light--was catalytic converter. Third visit for another cel for second dic failure.
We purchased our 2003 9-5 arc in March of 2003. Immediately, I noticed the exhaust smelled of human gas, seriously. Soon after the stench seeped into the cab of the vehicle. At 7000 I couldn't take it anymore and I brought the car in to have checked out by the dealer. They informed me there was nothing wrong with the car, that sometimes new cars smell. It was suggested that I use only premium or better fuel to lessen the smell. 3000 miles later, the car stunk. I brought it in for its first oil change and informed them that the car still stunk. It was discovered that the catalytic converter was defective and it was replaced, no charge to me. Now at 14000+ miles the car still stinks. I brought the car in today 1/12/04 and was told that there's nothing they can do. Basically, I have to live with the smell. I've been driving this vehicle for ten months with nauseating fumes seeping into the cab of the vehicle. These fumes not only upset my stomach but cause me headaches. I've been waking up with headaches since spring of 2003. Something has to be done. Please respond ASAP. I'm literally sick over this situation. - kim.
