I was driving on the highway when my cruise control shut off and the check engine light came on. When I came to a stop my entire car died. I was stuck at a stop light in the middle of rush hour. I had to hold my left foot on the brake and pump the gas pedal to get the car to rev, but it wouldn't continue to idle. It kept dying. I had to use both the brake pedal and the gas pedal to get it off the highway to a side street, which was extremely dangerous. Several times the car died. I took it to a gm certified repair shop who after three diagnostic checks determined the ignition module needed to be replaced along with the spark plugs because the engine was misfiring. I want SAAB to recall this part and pay for the repair. It is the exact same part and problem that they recalled for 2000-2002 vehicles. It makes absolutely no sense that the 2003 part has not been recalled. This is a serious safety hazard and something needs to be done to fix it and I should not have to pay for it.

The first time the oil light came on was in mid October 2006, after about an hour of driving. There was no other indication of a problem (noise, vibration, change in handling, etc). The oil had recently been changed, but it was rechecked and topped off on the side of the road anyway. Everything seemed good for about 20 min when the oil light came back on during a turn. I was on my way to the airport so I parked the car and took it to a service shop two days later when I returned. It was given an oil change and an overall check. The oil light did not come on during the test drive. I drove it home with no explanation as to why the oil light came on in the first place. In early 2007, the same thing happened again. This time the engine light came on too. Everything was checked over and nothing found wrong. Even the sensors were working fine. For the next year and a half, the oil and engine lights would go on and off at odd intervals accompanied by no other signs. Sometimes they would only flicker on and off during a short drive and other times they would stay on for weeks and then going off again for no reason. Each time, the oil and engine would be looked over and nothing found to be wrong. The last time there was an issue was on June 13th 2008. I was driving for about an hour and the oil light and engine light came on, this time accompanied by a ticking sound from the engine. I immediately pulled over at the next exit and had the car towed. After another checkover, we were told that the engine is failing due to sludge build up and that it would need to be replaced. It has 98,300 miles on it. All regular services were done, and oil changes were done at more frequent intervals than stated in the owners manual. We were told it would cost between $5000. 00 to $9000. 00 depending on what type of replacement motor was found (new or used). The vehicle is still sitting in our garage and has not been driven. The SAAB company refuses any responsibility.

The contact owns a 2000 SAAB 9-5. The contact believes that the ignition discharge module was the cause of her vehicle catching fire. The contact stated that before the fire occurred, the check engine light flashed. The contact's husband was driving when he noticed smoke rising from under the hood. He pulled over and exited the vehicle as it caught fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and the vehicle was towed. A police report was filed. The purchase date and speed were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 92,000.

The consumer received a letter from SAAB stating that problems with the idm could cause reduced power and rough operation. The consumer experienced this problem with his 2001 SAAB 9/5. The check engine light began to flash prior to the vehicle stalling.
: the contact stated while driving 25 mph the check engine light illuminated, the vehicle lost power and the speed dropped to 10 mph. The contact managed to get the vehicle home and once the engine was turned off, it would not restart. The vehicle was towed the dealer, where the ignition cassettes and spark plugs were replaced. The dealer determined the spark plugs were damaged as a result of the ignition cassette failure. There is a NHTSA recall, #05v399000, regarding the ignition module. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. This happened on the road where the speed limit was 30 mph. If this would have happened at one of the highways where people are driving at 65 mph there would have been a fatality. This vehicle would not do over 15 mph. The contact was able to drive home. The small of the car was very bad so the contact waited 20 minutes before leaving. There was no fire. Both ignition cassettes were replaced, as well as spark plugs.

Car stalled while cruising at 75 miles per hour on a busy interstate. Car could not be restarted, even after pulling to the side of the road. No prior indication of imminent failure was givenã‚â¦the engine simply cut out and check engine light came on. Dealer diagnosed as the failure of as a bad throttle body. This is a known weakness in the car for which SAAB has been trying to find a solution for years. The servicing dealer was surprised that the part was not in stock since it fails often. Many people have throttle body problems which trigger limp home mode and require a cleaning and/or replacement of the throttle body. Reportedly newer software triggers a check engine light before complete failure. This early warning was not given this case. It is completely unacceptable that this should still be an issue on a 2003 model year vehicle when the problem first showed itself in 1998. Does someone have to die in a rear end collision before SAAB or the NHTSA will act on this?.
While driving the vehicle 40+mph, the engine completely shut down without warning. The diagnosis, throttle failure. SAAB replaced the throtte body on 05/14/2004. Then again on 05/17/2004, the engine shut down in the midst of driving without warning. The engine light came on. SAAB has not been able to duplicate the problem. The car has proven to be extremely dangerous and unsafe to operate.
