Ignition Problems of SAAB 95 - part 2

SAAB 95 owners have reported 68 problems related to ignition (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 04/25/2005

Car is a SAAB 9-5 2. 3l, lpt wagon, 1999. The direct ignition cassette failed, fortunately the car was not totally disabled and we could get to the dealer for diagnosis, with the cell on. There have been numerous reports of the failure of this part at highway speed, which risks a catastrophe. This vehicle began to run badly and within 4 days the cell came on and the next time it was driven was to the dealer. The problem was diagnosed and the dig and plugs replaced. The car is 5 months old on a 4 year warranty, but mileage is on 35,900 at the dealer. After discussion with SAAB consumer service, SAAB agreed to pay for all parts but not the labor. Apparently they are aware internally of this problem on 1999 and later SAAB 9-5's and the direct ignition cassette. There ought to be an absolute recall for this, and if so we should also be reimbursed our labor charge. We are also uncertain as to whether the cassettes now produced are equally susceptible to failure.

37 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

Complete, instantaneous shutdown of the entire vehicle at speed. Loss of power, loss of power steering and brakes, had to angle across two lanes of high speed traffic while coasting! thankfully, no one hit me! had to replace the "direct ignition cassette". This failed completely.

38 Ignition problem of the 2000 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 04/08/2005

I used the car only for week end ski trips twice a month or less through the winter. This occasionally required jump starts. The week of the failure the car started okay to move it to the garage so I could take the snow tires off, I then moved it back to its spot. That Friday, I drove over 100 miles from CT to brattleboro, vt, where I went to a supermarket, then a restaurant. It ran perfectly, until I finished dinner, and it would not start. It would crank, but there was no combustion. After a few long walks and many phone calls, no one could help with it and there was no place to stay for the night or cars to rent. I took a taxi 20-30 miles to my family ski house in newfane. The next morning, I called several shops and found one that could look at it. (no dealers in the area) the car was towed to them, and I got a ride from my neighbor down the mountain and back into town. The shop determined it was not a simple fix, and could not give it any more time until later in the week. I called some dealers back in CT, and had it towed there. I got my uncle to come bring me and my dog home. Tuesday, I called the dealer it was at, and they told me the direct ignition cassette failed, and would need to be replaced along with the spark plugs. The repair cost $619. 01, and fixed the problem.

39 Ignition problem of the 2002 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 01/24/2005

Direct ignition cartridge failures. On three occasions my car has suddenly stopped with no warnings. Fortunately in each case I was able to get to the side of the road safely. In each case the dealer has replaced the cartridge calling it "defective". I am not on my fourth cartridge in 35,000 miles.

40 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 01/20/2005

Ignition casette failure--second replacement in 12 months!!!! even though the defect was found (and documented!) in January 2005 (less than 12 months after the initial replacement in February of 2004), SAAB will not pay for replacement and repairs as it is claiming that it was not repaired until April.

41 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 01/05/2005

Add me to the list of drivers stranded on the highway with total loss of power because direct ignition cassette burnt up. The car only had 62,000 miles. It cost over $1,300 to replace.

42 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

Station wagon stalled traveling at speed of 40 mph. Was able to start car after about 1 hour. Took car to SAAB dealer following day, they were unable to identify problem. Next day car stalled going up hill at 20 mph - car had to be pushed into service station. New ignition cassette was installed by fritschs exxon 99 s. Newtown square, PA 19063 12/30/2004. They kept old part. Phone 610-353-3007. They obtained new part from mainline SAAB in ardmore, PA. I had to rent a car.

43 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 12/24/2004

Multiple times the car, when warm will just without warning. All electrical and engine simultaneously quits leaving the driver to deal with a situation of no power brakes and steering. Multiple trips to dealer has resulted in no diagnosis and genearl apathy about the problem. The car is stil under warranlty but it offers no value. Clear safety issue as the last event was at a elemenary school where a child was almost hit as the lack of braking and steering power. How can such a symptom betreated withsuch apathy. We will be forced to sel the car for safety reasons and no responsibility is taken by SAAB. Ironically we had a similar problem with a 1994 9000.

44 Ignition problem of the 2002 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 12/08/2004

My 2002 SAAB 9-5 stalled and would not restart in the middle of a very busy 4 lane road. I have also noticed there are 14 other complaints on the NHTSA website with the same problem as mine. This an extremely dangerous problem a vehicle stalling on a highway or anywhere else can result in a crash or death. There was no prior warning of said issue. SAAB dealer found code p1310 referred to tsb248-2428 and reprogrammed the sps. New #5387691 completed idm test and found current status 141 idd check code 57047. Located as an internal fault in the idm and also found the spark plugs fouled. Replaced idm and spark plugs. Direct ignition cassette. A TSB means that SAAB knows about this problem. I feel unsafe getting into my vehicle now.

45 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 10/28/2004

Failure of the direct ignition casette. The vehicle left me stranded at the gas station and later that night on the side of the road. Please institute a recall. This is ridiculous!!!!!.

46 Ignition problem of the 2000 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 09/30/2004

My car periodically will not start. The lights come on; there appears to be power; but when I turn the ignition, all I hear is a click. The car will start on a bump start (manual trans) and will take a jump. I have had the car to the dealer several times but they cannot find the problem. Happens mainly on cold starts.

47 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 09/29/2004

I had a failure of the direct ignition cassette on my SAAB. This resulted in an immediate, unanticipated engine failure with no warning on the highway. This caused my vehicle to immediately die in the middle of the highway. I have since learned that this is not an uncommon problem with Saabs. To me this constitutes a serious safety issue for SAAB drivers and passengers. In my case I was fortunate enough to have 2 police vehicles respond within minutes to divert highway traffic. This part is now being replaced.

48 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 09/16/2004

Driving at 65mph in far left lane of highway and sudden loss of speed--could only go 20-30 mph for a few minutes before burning smell. Was able to come to right shoulder while dodging highway traffic. Direct ignition cassette (dic) failure 1 of 2 dic's in 6 cylinder engine). Second visit required for check engine light--was catalytic converter. Third visit for another cel for second dic failure.

49 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 09/04/2004

1999 SAAB 9-5 direct ignition cassette failed. Left car stranded. This item should be recalled. Many SAAB owners have experienced dangerous failures of this component.

50 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 06/09/2004

Exiting the highway on an overpass bridge the engine stopped without warning and would not restart. A few moments later smoke was visible from under the direct ignition cover and small flame was apparent. The flame went out after a few moments. However, we were left stranded on an unlit bridge overpass that was under construction at dusk (with an infant and toddler). SAAB roadside assistance was contacted (they suggested we wait with the vehicle for approximately an hour until a tow truck could reach us. ) this incident follows a string of minor electical / electronic "bugs" in which erroneous signals about light failures were displayed and the headlights failed to turn off when the key was removed (this is an automatic feature on Saabs).

51 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 05/16/2004

While entering I-80 from a rest stop and accelerating to highway speeds engine just quit. I was able to pull to the side of the road, and it re-started immediately. I continued with no further problem. On reaching colorado springs, I took the car to the local SAAB dealer, explained the problem, and they could find no problem. They suggested that perhaps my wife had accidentally hit the key when adjusting herself in the car, causing the engine to quit, and suggested if it happened again to jiggle the key in the ignition. The dates given for the incident below are a slide fiction - it happened in 2004, and I think in may, but do not recall for sure, nor do I recall the exact date.

52 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 03/15/2004

Car started running badly (misfiring). Based on number of failures reported on the Saabnet website, I figured the direct ignition cassette was failing. Removed it and found a cracked component in the cassette. Replaced the cassette with new one ($414 list price) and problem cured. SAAB now wants failed cassette back and is charging a $250 core charge if it's not returned. Another expensive and common failure with the 9-5.

53 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 02/24/2004

While driving on the interstate in the passing lane in my 1999 SAAB 1995 accelerating from 65 mph to 75 mph, the engine suddenly stopped running when I reached about 75 mph. It smelled like plastic was burning and nothing on the car was operational. Traffic was very heavy and luckily I was able to roll to the right side of the road without getting hit or causing an accident at that high speed. Such catastrophic failure of a component is unacceptable when driving at today?s speeds and traffic. After having the car towed to the dealership, they replaced the dic (direct ignition cassette) for $738. 10. The car was just out of warranty.

54 Ignition problem of the 2000 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 12/28/2003

2000 SAAB 9-5 sedan suddenly stalled out at 60 mph as 2 tracker trailers nearly collided into my vehicle. No shoulders on this highway leaving my family in a horribly dangerous place. Vermont state police responded to provide protection. The cassette which houses the ignition failed. Both the dealer and other owners have expressed that this occurs al the time with Saabs and there is no way to prevent these cars from stalling at any time!.

55 Ignition problem of the 1999 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 11/21/2003

There was no indication that this part would fail, until it did fail. I was driving and the engine just shut off, on the highway. I was able to pull to the side of the highway and roll off an off-ramp, but did create an unsafe condition while still on the highway. The part was a "direct ignition cassette", part #9197559, and it was easily replaced by my mechanic after the car was towed to his facility.

56 Ignition problem of the 2002 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 11/07/2003

Car failed at 70 miles/hour on expressway. Just stopped. Cause was diagnosed as direct ignition cassette-web search shows this to be a common SAAB problem. Was quite terrifying and dangerous to lose power on expressway-definite safety hazard.

59 Ignition problem of the 2002 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 08/12/2003

On 3 separate occasions the car has completely shut down, losing brakes, steering, power, etc. The 1st at 70 mph on freeway, the 2nd on city st. About 35 mph and the 3rd in my neighborhood at 20 mph. SAAB has replaced 3 different things. The car is too unpredictable and unsafe for driving.

60 Ignition problem of the 2000 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 08/11/2003

On 8/11/03 I was driving on us route 9 in hudson new york when my engine stopped running. Pulled to side of road. Had to be towed to SAAB dealer 40 miles away. Replace ignition cassette. Was advised due to my attempt to re-start the car, raw gas got into catalytic converter. Tyhat had to be replaced several weeks later. I am writing this so late as I was unaware this may not be an isolated instance.

61 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95

Failure Date: 07/15/2003

I was driving on the highway and began exiting when the SAAB completely died. No warning. . All lights came on and the car had no power. I coasted down the ramp. What would have happened had I been in the left lane? SAAB quickly diagnosed this as a shorted out direct ignition cassette. They repaired it returned the car. It needed to go back as it had no power. The cassette's failure destroyed the catalytic converter as well. I have now heard of this incident three times on 2001 SAAB 9-5's. Where is the recall?.

62 Ignition problem of the 2001 SAAB 95
