general problems of the 2005 Saturn ION - part 2

My son was driving and the truck in front of him stopped suddenly. He hit the brakes and felt the steering lock up, brakes locked and he couldn't stop. Hit the truck hard enough to crack the core support in the Saturn but the air bag do not expand. He was not injured but this is definitely a safety issue if you can hit another car enough to crack the steel frame but no airbag was deployed.

I was driving on the highway and my power steering sensor came on and I had no power steering.

Loss of steering while turning. Resulted in a crash and over $2000. 00 in damage. Car is not driveable.

The contact owns a 2005 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that the ignition failed. When the key was inserted into the ignition, the steering wheel seized and the engine failed to start. The failure was experienced numerous times. The dealer replaced the key code however, the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 97,000. Kmj.

I was turning at an intersection and power steering went out. As the power steering went out a warning came across the dash. I just bought the car on February 14, 2013 used.

My car leaks in the roof when its rains and has stained my interior roof. My power steering went out and on the display it was pwr steering. My outside trim near windows is warped. My sunroof doesnt work it wont open.

Driving on the way to work this morning, the power steering went out three times! twice on a regular highway and once on the interstate. Going 45 mph suddenly bell sounded and pwr steer light came on and immediately the power steering went off. I was able to get the car to the side of the road, but would not have been able to turn it, because the steering becomes, not quite manual, surely much harder than the manual mode I well remember. When I cut off the motor and restarted, the steering returned to normal. On the interstate, I was going 62 mph when the steering went out. Pulled over to an exit lane, stopped and restarted and everything worked again. Very dangerous! I don't know how many cars have been stopped on the road, and a car coming failed to see that they were stopped and slammed into them. . . I just bought this car in April. In checking online before buying, I saw the complaints about the key sticking, but didn't see anything about the steering at all. I'm a widow, still working, and repairs would be very difficult. Especially when this should be a recall, and done for free, since it was/is defective and possibly injurious. Again, I feel very vulnerable and in danger when this is going on, and it's happening more and more every day over the last two weeks (sept 11th was the first time).

2005 Saturn Ion. Consumer writes in regards to power steering control module repair problems. The consumer stated the power steering control module, failed twice.

The key gets stuck in the ignition, this has been a problem for 2 years, often have to leave the car with the key in (this is very unsafe). Today the key was stuck and would not turn, I could not turn the car off --- this is an extremely unsafe situation.

As I was driving the power steering went completely out, I had to restart car in order to regain power steering. But it continued to go back out on me 2 mins after restarting car repeatedly.

I was pulling out of my parking space and the power-steering function stopped working.

While driving on the highway a warning light came on and I completely lost my power assist steering. It was hard to turn the steering wheel. I pulled over and turned the key off and when I turned the key back on the steering assist worked again. Since the first incident it has happened multiple times. Saturn customer service was no help in getting this fixed.

Eps went out while sitting at a light. I drove the 5 miles home without power steering. Upon restarting the car, the eps resumed working.

Saturn Ion 2005 is loosing power steering. It comes back on if the car is turned off and back on again, but continues to loose power steering while driving.

Loss of power steering during highway speed. Pulled over and restarted car, power steering came back on then stopped again. Ever since this incident has occurred the power steering will randomly shut off. This could be a dangerous situation when it occurs during making turns or driving sharp curvy roads as it takes a lot of upper body strength to turn the wheel at lower speeds.

At stop light, power steering flashed on dash. Drove about one mile, went back on, another mile and power steering went off for good.

The contact owns a 2005 Saturn Ion. While driving approximately 30 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel for a few seconds and then there was a complete loss of powering steering. The contact was able to continue driving with difficulty in turning the steering wheel. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 22,558.

Power steering system goes on and off. Happens at all speeds and in turns. Multiple accidents have nearly occurred because of this. There has been an extended warranty up to 100,000 miles but if you're car is past it gm refuses to do anything about it. This is a safety issue because of a bad design! not right I should have to pay to be safe because of a faulty design.

While driving down the road at normal speed 55 mph we get a ding ding ding with a pwr steer light to come on and then we have no power steering. Luckily my husband was driving. After calling the Saturn dealership it appears to be the power steering assist module. This is dangerous due to you not getting much of a warning.

The first time it went off was when we were entering a highway. The electric alarm went off and then I found the steering was not working. It was dangerous and very hard to pull over when cars behind are accelerating to get into the highway traffic. After a restart, everything seemed okay. Then on our way back home the same thing happened for 4 or 5 times. We had to drive in the right lane at a low speed to give ourselves enough space for safty.

I had been driving approx. 2 hours of a 11 hour trip when I saw a message replace the odometer about the power steering. I left i95 using exit 98 and pulled over in a gas station. The manual stated that the power steering was electric, so no steering fluid to check. I restarted the car and magically the problem was fixed and my trip odomoeter was magically set to zero. I drove around the frontage road and everything seermed fine so I continued on my way. 22 miles later the same thing happened. I took the next exit, shut the car off, restarted it and magically again it was fixed with no reset of the trip odometer. Again I continued on my trip only to have it happen again 23 miles later, at which point I repeated the stopping/restarting procedure and turned around headed for home. While driving home it happened two more times, then once more in the driveway when I was backing up. So a total of 6 times within a 5 hour period and no prior history (since I've owned it) of this problem. I purchased this car used from a dealer may 28 2011 with approx. 46500 miles. The only other problem I've had is the key not wanting to come out of the ignition after I've turned the car off; after I put the gear shift into reverse then back into park, the key will come out; sometimes I can hear a clicking sound when the ignition switch fixes itself and then the key will come out, also.

Electric power steering problems. Pwr str message.

When attempting to turn a corner the electronic power assist steering did not respond and the vehicle continued to travel straight instead of turning the corner. This resulted in striking the median and a tree leaving me facing on coming traffic. Fortunately there was no on coming traffic.

My power steering keeps going out, the light comes on and I loose powersteering. If I shut it off and turn it back on the light goes off and I have steering again. It used to only happen like once a week, now it happens multiple times in one day.

On 6/13/11, when I was leaving for work I started my car and immediately my pwrstr message came up on the dashboard and could not hardly turn the wheel. Called the dealership cause I received a bulletin letter. I brought the car in on 6/14/11, they said they put in a new ps motor. On 11/6/11 the pwr str came up again. I brought the car back to them on 11/7/11, they said I needed a new steering coloum and cost was $897. Which they said they replaced. On 11/15/11, the same message appeared and could not steer the wheel. This is after supposedly they replaced the ps motor and steering coloum. Going back today 11/16/11, to see what crap they are going to tell me. Why does this keep on happening?? gm needs to fix the problem not put a band aid on it, before something serious happens, and effidently they are not. By the way how do I know they are actually doing the repairs, if the problem keeps coming back and the service advisor is so mean. Please help!! there is a very big problem with these cars and we & are families are being put at risk every time we drive them.

Power steering stops during driving. Warning chimes come on and pwr strng message is displayed in odometer window. It first occurred 5/20/11 and has several times since. Often several times on the days it happens (5 x yesterday 5/29/11alone) but so far not every day . It happens under various conditions (never the same) (city, hwy, hot, warm, cold etc. ).

The steering wheel got hard to turn back and forth. Car got does this once in a while.

Power steering message comes on and car is very hard to steer. If I stop and restart the car the power steering comes back. At first this happened once every few weeks. Now it is becoming a daily occurrence; even more than once per day. It appears to be a common problem for Saturn Ions. The local dealership that inherited Saturns told me they have not heard of this problem. I have not taken the car to be serviced yet.

2005 Saturn Ion . 88 k miles. Sudden loss of power steering. Fuses replaced. Resets itself with restart but recurs frequently. Very hard to steer and dangerous when occurs unexpectedly. Gm customer service called but they deny a general recall. Not helpful. The VIN is 1g8ag52f65z159908.

2005 Saturn Ion I power steering recall I had the recall notice - called Saturn of cool springs - and they point blank asked "is it doing it now" I said "no" and their response was "dont worry about it". On my way home from work, a light (a warning light) came on my dash, they next thing I know the steering jerked and I crossed over 5 lanes of traffic during rush hour and hit a concrete wall head on. I could not control the steering as it was locked. Gm states the recall is for only going at low rates of speed - I think that is a cop out from gm.

2005 Saturn Ion power steering goes out randomly while driving at any speed. Very dangerous and potentially deadly.

While driving my 2005 Saturn Ion the power steering went out. After I stopped and checked things under the hood I restarted the car then the power steering was working again. A few minutes later the power steering went out again.

2005 Saturn Ion 2 coupe, power steering goes out accompanied with a chime and a pwr str warning on dash. Resets after car is turned off and restarted. Problem recurs shortly after reset. Dtc code c0475 . There is a recall on chevy cobalt for this same problem but not on this car, from what I understand they are accentually the same car. Part # on the power steering motor is 995-10800 which is the part # for a cobalt power steering motor. Gm says there is special coverage on this issue but only if it fails. No recall ? I will be installing a new motor part # 19257875 to fix this problem.

I have a 2005 Saturn Ion which is now over 100,00k miles. The power steering suddenly went out with no warning signals on dashboard. There is no fluid reservoir to put the fluid and the car is not under warranty because of mileage. I tried turning the car off and on again and still no luck. After reading up on the Saturn issue, I learned that there are many others with different makes and year of the same model having the same issues. I have no money to repair this vehicle and would like to know if Saturn (gm) is going to do a recall on this issue. It cost over $900. 00 to fix this issue. I have tried contacting Saturn dealers but of course the company has been sold. I have contacted a gm dealers repair shop and was told that they just try to repair the issue they are not able to help with warranty issues.

My power steering unit on my 2005 Saturn Ion 3 (with only 37,345 miles on it) went out while on the highway almost causing a serious accident.
