36 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2014

Very strong fuel smell coming from rear of vehicle. No sign of fuel underneath vehicle. There is a fuel system recall (gm # 090226) describing these same symptoms for 2006 Saturn Ions purchased in California. Recall warns of fire danger. Gm representative reports my vehicle is not covered based on VIN number, but all symptoms match recall and I don't think that the car is safe to drive, especially since we have a three-year-old in a car seat in the back much of the time.

37 Other Fuel System problem

39 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

I purchased my 2006 Saturn Ion 3 in 2008 from a dealership. I have had all the recall issues happen to my vehicle. 1) I have replaced the ignition switch and cylinder twice due to the car being unable to shut off. This happened in 2008 and again in 2012. Both times it was covered under warranty and repairs were done by gm dealership. Even though these have been replaced I was told they need to be replaced again under the recall because those parts are faulty as well. I have been in contact with the dealership and was told they do not have the parts yet and will let me know when they are available. 2) in November 2013 my vehicle smelled of gas and was making me and my children sick. I had it checked out at the dealership and it was the fuel module. This was covered by a ntsb warranty extension. 3) my vehicle will intermittently shut off or lose power steering. When I took it into the dealership in 2013 they told me they would not touch it if they could not replicate the problem. It has not been fixed. 4) this issue is not mentioned in any of the complaints I have read here, but I have seen others complain on the internet. Beginning in January of 2014 there is a strong odor of exhaust fumes in my vehicle. My personal mechanic said there is a leak that is going into the cabin. My vehicle is slow to accelerate and feels shakey. There is also a loud noise coming from the engine compartment. I have to drive with the windows down at all times. I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle since right after I purchased it. I do not have a second vehicle nor the means to buy one. I rely on it to get me to work and to transport my family. It is very disappointing to have to deal with these issues over and over again.

42 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2013

In August of 2008 at appx 37000 miles, the ignition switch locked in the 'run' position. Since the car was a manual, I stalled it out and called a locksmith, who could not remove or turn the key either. He disconnected the car from the battery so that it would not drain due to the accessories still being active. He told me how to reconnect the battery so that I could drive in for repairs. I have not had any more problems until yesterday (June 2013) at appx 100000 miles. The ignition would not turn beyond the accessories position. After several attempts, key positions, clutch positions, I was able to start the car and immediately drove it to a repair center. I have seen numerous similar complaints on this website and yet there are no recalls for this faulty ignition problem. I have had the issue from both sides (couldn't turn off and couldn't turn on).

43 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

After smelling gas I parked my car and discovered gasoline leaking from my car. Saturn admitted that the faulty part was their fault, but informed me that I had gone over the warranty mileage and claimed they were not responsible at that time. If their part was defective as they stated I feel they are responsible no matter what! I also feel that the lives of me and my family were in danger!!.

The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion3. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a strong fuel odor emitted inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there was a fuel leak. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 09v419000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle had not been repaired. 45 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

Recently I started smelling gas around my vehicle and inside my vehicle after it had been sitting for awhile. Then the check gas cap light came on along with the check engine light, I also noticed the vehicle has a little trouble starting. I found NHTSA campaign id number 09v419000 and recall 09226 both of which explain my issue. My VIN number is included in the list of affected vehicles in the recall but because my vehicle was not originally sold or currently registered in one of the state listed it is not included in the recall. How can living in one state and not another influence a recall? since there is potential for a fire I can't wait to get this fixed and will have to pay for the parts and labor on my own.

46 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2012

A friend advised me they could smell gas by my car. I searched and learned there was a recall. I've seen online there have been difficulties getting this fixed with certain VIN numbers and/or states therefore I wanted to be sure to report the issued in an effort to expand the recall. I do not know how long the issue has been present but it was observed on August 06, 2012. During normal business hours I will seek assistance.

48 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2012

I started smelling gas when was stopped. I figured there may be a leak. I took it to a shop and they said I have one. I researched online and found that there was a recall on parts of the fuel system but that it doesn't apply in my state. So now im going to have to pay the $600 or so to get it fixed.

52 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2011

The car all of the sudden had a very bad smell of gas but no licking anywhere, two weeks later just park the car at my home and all of the sudden literally rain gas out of the car , had to call a tow company and finally paid extra $250. 00 so the dealer carmax had to change the entire system, they only cover have of the total, it was really scary thank god it didn't caught fire. There is a recall but I don't know if we can get a refund or how does it work??.

53 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2011

My 2006 Saturn Ion key would not turn off. Left vehicle running until I could find a service shop open at 7pm. Took care to non-gm shop for fixing that night, shop claimed this is a very common problem. Ignition tumbler was broken. They replaced for around $400. Saturn would not even consider covering this since I did not use a gm dealer. Almost 1 year later this happened again. Luckily parts and labor were covered within the year, however, now they stated that the tumbler housing is also worn out and are wanting to charge an additional $300 to cover the new parts and difference in labor. First instance was at 63,000 miles, second instance at 75,000 miles. Unacceptable.

54 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

One day upon exiting the vehicle I experienced a very strong odor of gasoline. I lived in the country at the time and also in texas. I shrugged it off thinking I maybe got some on the side of the car or my clothes. Later I entered the vehicle and attempted to start it. Turns over 6 times after a single bump of the key but this time the car did not start. I then remembered that earlier I smelled fuel. I thought maybe I have a leak in the lines. I cycled the key 3 times then tried to start it again. After the first turn it cranked right up. When I returned home that afternoon I researched a little and found that its been notorious for developing a crack in the lines right off of the pump. I looked for a recall but found nothing. Nothing but complaints that is. . Read more...

55 Other Fuel System problem

56 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2008

The 2006 Saturn Ion ignition locked on with the car running in park. This seems to be a chronic problem with Saturn Ions. The vehicle can not be turned off and the key can not be removed. It gets completely locked in place. The vehicle remains running, wasting gas and could be a safety hazard if something else is happening and the vehicle must be shut off quickly and can't. The only way to shut the vehicle off is to disconnect the battery and pull an ignition fuse. The key remains locked in place. I'm putting this under 'fuel system-other' because the ignition turns the fuel system on and off. I originally parked and tried to shut the vehicle off because I smelled fuel. Luckily it was coming from somewhere else and was just in the air. But it was scary to smell fuel and not be able to shut the vehicle off.

57 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2007

The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. While driving 1-50 mph in wet, slippery, or icy roads, the tires would spin out and cause the vehicle to lose control and the throttle power failed for 5-8 seconds. In November of 2007, the dealer stated that they could not duplicate the failure; however, they stated that the wiring harness needed to be replaced due to the air conditioner. After it snowed, the vehicle also began to spin and lose power while driving uphill and then slid back down. On February 13, 2008, the dealer stated that the failure was due to the fuel regulator and kept the vehicle for over three weeks. An unauthorized driver at the dealer crashed the vehicle into a ditch with two feet of water, causing water to enter the headlights. The contact has 56 photos available. He was advised that his vehicle does not qualify for the lemon law. The VIN, engine size, number of cylinders, transmission type, powertrain, and fuel type were unknown. The current mileage was 38,200 and failure mileage was 11,000.
