Recently, I have noticed a strong odor of gasoline in and around the car. I searched the fuel lines to see if there was a leak and there was not. I did some research online and found the gm recall for the fuel pump of this vehicle. The NHTSA campaign number is 09v419000. I contacted gm and gave them my VIN to see if my car was one of the affected. They told me it was not. I see that the recall includes 2006 Saturn Ions in north carolina, but apparently my car is not part of the recall. The issue with my car is exactly the same listed in the recall. I have done more research and have found over 80 other complaints from other Saturn Ion owners stating that their cars are doing exactly the same thing. However, their cars are not included in the recall either. I believe this issue affects a majority of these model cars, not just the ones listed in the recall sent out by gm.
My 2006 Saturn Ion recently had to have the fuel pump replaced. I noticed a recall (090226) on certain Ion vehicles from this year for this exact issue, but the recall did not include my car. The problem described in the recall describes what happened to my vehicle. I'm hoping by notifying the NHTSA about the fact that this is happening to other vehicles that the recall may get expanded and gm will have to take car of the problem for other people.
The car was in arizona for 6 months (Feb. 2012 thru Aug. 2012) upon returning to illinois there was a strong gas smell around the vehicle. The car was taken to a shop and it was found to have a crack in the fuel pump and it was replaced. I read about the recall for this problem but it did not list 2006 Saturn Ions. I believe that 2006 should also be included in the recall also. During my research I have found many other 2006 models having this problem. It was the hottest summer on record and the car was parked outside while in arizona.

We smelled a very strong fuel odor- very profound, obvious, confirmed by technician at lockhart Cadillac, greenwood, in. There is a current recall out, recall number 09v41900. This recall is for a faulty fuel pump plastic assembly that cracks in extremely high temperatures and includes several western and southern or otherwise traditional "hot weather" states. Gm knows it is a problem but because I live in indiana they would not cover the repair bill. The midwest has experienced on of the hottest summers on record which is what causes this problem. I believe that the midwestern states should be added since this is a potentially fatal problem if not repaired quickly. As you full well know a simple ignition source, a spark or cigarette butt, could set this off. It would be in everyone's best interest to remedy this problem for owners in the midwest.

Fuel pump module assy.
After parking the car on a short drive to the store, I smelled gasoline around the car. When I checked underneath the car, fuel was visibly pouring from the fuel tank area and was pooling under the car. Upon inspection of the fuel system, the return port of the fuel pump was discovered to be cracked and broken-off, enabling fuel returning to the pump to pour out of the system.

Strong smell of gasoline in car. Gas leaking under the car. It has a crack in the fitting on the fuel pump. The same problem gm has had a partial recall on. Informed by Saturn that our car isn't covered by the recall. How can this be when its the exact same part and problem. We are not happy with gm or Saturn and will never by other gm again if this is how they do business. This is a huge safety issue.
Smelled gas inside car. Fuel pump module replaced.
Every time fuel is slightly below a quarter tank the engine stalls as if the car is running out of gas and the cars drastically reduces speed with minimum power. Also, after the incident occurred I went online to research the problem and found out that the vehicle had been recalled for fuel pump problems as well as lighting irregularities. Furthermore, as I continued using my vehicle the ignition switch cylinder broke causing the key to be stuck and was unable to turn off the ignition of the car. Luckily, I have a stick shift transmission and was able to turn off the car by putting it into 4th gear and letting go of the clutch to turn off the ignition. Unfortunately, the car battery remains on and in order to completely turn off the car I have to disconnect the battery cable so the batter life is not drained.
I own a 2006 Saturn Ion. Very strong smell of gas in the car after sitting. Took to dealer had to replace fuel pump module do to crack and gas leak. $700+ cost.
Fuel pump leaking on 2006 Saturn Ion as described in campaign id 09v419000 gm recall 090226. Gm and Saturn would not cover this as stated in the report for the exact same problem. I only received a discount on the part. Fuel pump and fuel fitter replaced.
We took our vehicle 2006 Saturn Ion 2 with 61k miles, in for an oil change on 10/15/2009 to the Saturn dealership. The dealership has been the only mechanic to perform any service to the vehicle since we purchased the vehicle on 01/24/2006 from the same Saturn of bakersfield dealership. We take the vehicle in for regular service and have the maintenance records of the vehicle. We also have subscribed to onstar, which sends monthly "diagnostic reports" of the engine and transmission, emissions, air bag system, remaining oil life ect. After this oil check I noticed a very strong odor of gasoline in the cab of the vehicle and outside the car, but mostly inside the cab. The fumes are flammable. When Saturn service technician looked at the vehicle, he stated on invoice: "cust states strong fuel odor can be smelled in and out of vehicle. Vehicle was in for lof on 10/21/09. Inspect vehicle found fuel pump leaking from crack in fuel pump at hose fitting, no physical damage found. Normal movement and rough roads may have led to failure. Recommended replacing fuel pump estimate to replace part 19168894 565. 00 parts 304. 35 plus tax 25. 11 plus labor 235. 00 equals 564. 46 " I believe this to be a similar issue as the 2004 Ions. How can a vehicle driven back and forth to work, that is maintained, be failing in this manner? the vehicle is not driven on rough roads mainly a freeway CA hwy 99. How could a 3 1/2 year old car be "falling apart" and failing due to "normal movement"? we are out of warranty, therefore we had to pay to have this corrected. We do have a policy in our insurance that will cover, but we will have to pay a higher deductible. Saturn could not fix the vehicle at that time, we asked if it was safe to drive, they stated keep the windows cracked and don't park in the garage due to vapors are flammable. It is scheduled to be repaired 10/26/09. Saturn's the company, defective parts should be recalled. This is unsafe. A rocket on wheels as my wife says.
