Saturn ION owners have reported 3 problems related to other fuel system tank mounting (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I started smelling gas when getting out of car. Then it got progressively stronger gas smell that lingered on strong an hour after the car had been sitting. So I checked for gas leak on exterior of gas tank and found extreme amount of gas coming from both of the fuel lines of the fuel module on top of tank. This didnt start until the weather has become warm in the 80 s and 90s. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

After filing tank, I noticed a strong gasoline smell in the vehicle then upon driving the car about 25 miles,I stopped to check under vehicle to see if I could find a problem related to the fuel smell. I found a large amount of fuel leaking from underneath the car near the fuel tank and exhaust system. I had to call a tow truck for fear of fire or explosion. I was later notified by the dealer that the problem was not related to the recall notice I received for the fuel pump module being cracked rather it was the seal between the fuel pump and the tank. A simple internet search revealed the many issues with the so called recall of the wrong issue on this model year vehicle. I believe this is a serious safety issue that is being overlooked and covered up with a nonsense recall of an unassociated aspect of the fuel system. The recall advises not to take vehicle to dealership until you notice a smell of gas, fuel leaking or a problem light on the dash. . . Why would one wait until fuel is noticed leaking before taking vehicle in for recall. This is just a plain and simple lack of regard for the safety of the consumer by gm. I hope and pray that no one has become hurt or severely injured by the major lack of good judgment.

Started smelling gasoline around the car. Upon inspection found that the gas tank was leaking at the seam where the filler tube goes into the tank. The leak was not just at one point but practically all the way around. The gas was literally streaming out. I took it to the dealership and all they said was that it was not covered under any recall and unless the fuel pump itself is leaking they would charge me $120 diagnosis fee. I patched it and got it down to a seep. About 2 months later the fuel pump started leaking. I took it to a different dealer and they said they would replace the pump but I had to pay for the fuel tank ($831). Labor would be free since the tank is off anyway. My complaint is that the fuel tank should never start leaking. It was leaking far more than the pump and in my opinion was far more dangerous. Even at very low levels it would leak a considerable amount, especially if parked on a upward incline.
