Failure Date: 03/29/2010

Driving ~20mph on dirt road for 7 miles when smelled hot oil. Determined that both shocks had blown out their grease and there was a significant amount of smoke coming out of both rear shocks. Shocks stopped smoking within 30 minutes of letting car set, shocks are no longer functional. Wondering if it would have caught fire if we hadn't stopped immediately.

4 Rear Suspension problem of the 2004 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

2004 Saturn Vue rear suspension causes wheel to collapse due to shearing of bolt under constant load. This problem spurred a voluntary gm recall in 2004. My vehicle had the recall work completed. In August, 2009, the wheel collapsed again while my wife and kids were in the car. I'm not sure how they drove it home with that condition without a rollover or accident. I had the repair made free of charge after much argument but am concerned that in 4-5 years, bolt fatigue will cause the situation to repeat once again. I have the sheared bolt head in my possession . I am writing due to concern that many many others will again, soon, this year, experience the same wheel collapse after having their voluntary recall repairs made in 2004. It seems like a mandatory recall of the gm voluntary recall is in order. Excerpt from consumer affairs article, August 5, 2004: general motors is voluntarily recalling the Saturn Vue to fix a problem with the rear suspension. In doing so, it may be hoping to avoid litigation that could result from accidents occurring while government safety agencies conduct their own investigations. The recall affects 246,433 Vues in the 2002-2004 model years, including 231,123 in the united states and 15,310 in canada. It all started when a Saturn Vue owner wrote to the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to complain that the rear wheels of his car collapsed on a tight turn, causing the vehicle to roll over. The agency decided to conduct a test of its own, taking tight turns at 45 mph, and sure enough, the rear suspension collapsed and the car rolled over. The same thing happened when a two-wheel drive model of the Vue was put through the same test. . Read more...

6 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Saturn Vue which was purchased in December 2002. She stated that there were numerous failures with the vehicle. While driving approximately 6 mph through a brush-less car wash, water entered into the sun roof housing. On a separate occasion, she also smelled oil burning and the dealer replaced the right inner cv joint boot. The hazards lights failed to operate normally and were repaired twice due to repeat failures. When she engaged the hazard switch, it collapsed into the dashboard console. The service engine soon light illuminated and the dealer stated that the thermostat failed and it was replaced. All repairs were made to the vehicle per the warranty. The rear lateral link assembly recall number 04067001 2002-2004 Vue rear suspension recall was also replaced. The driver's side window would not close; however, the driver's side switch was replaced. The fuel gauge indicated the improper level of fuel that was in the fuel tank; although, the fuel sending units were replaced. All of the repairs made to the vehicle have failed more than once. The horn would also operate intermittently on its own. The dealer found a shortage in the body control module and replaced the operating design system which forced the mechanic to reprogram the keys to the vehicle. The valve cover gasket failed a second time when the contact smelled oil burning. There were no related recalls for most of the other failed components. The failure mileage was 14,002 and the current mileage was 70,501.

7 Rear Suspension problem of the 2005 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

Manual transmission on 2005 Saturn Vue 4 cyl failed at about 50,000 miles. Lost the clutch pedal and could not shift the car at all. Occurred while driving on the expressway. Got it to the dealer for repair and they knew exactly what the problem was. Slave unit failed, which also caused the clutch to be replaced. Paid about $1800. 00 for the repaid and Saturn would not acknowledge that they have transmission problems with their cars. Doing some research on the internet I found that there is a long history of transmission failures and suspension failures on the cars. I am not experiencing more transmission issues and suspension problems. I feel that Saturn/gm is aware of defective parts in their cars and refuse to make the proper repairs needed.

8 Rear Suspension problem of the 2004 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 10/09/2007

2004 Saturn Vue with 18,938 miles. The vehicle was sitting in my driveway when I heard a very loud bang. I thought someone threw a rock at my car. I failed to find reason for noise until I drove my car out of the driveway. When I pulled out, the rear end was very loose, swaying from side to side, and it felt like there was no control. Returned to my driveway and found a washer laying on the ground. The loud noise I heard must have been a bolt(s) that sheared, while the car was just sitting. Took vehicle to dealer where they determined that both bolts for the lateral links were broken and twisted. Tech replaced both rear lateral links and set toe.

9 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 04/12/2007

I am dissatisfied with the corrective action towards Saturn Vue recall campaign # 04067001. The inside pivot bolt on the driver side rear lateral link sheared off on our Saturn Vue before having the recall work performed. The bolt I am talking about is the m12-1. 75x85mm 10. 9 hardness bolt. Moments before the bolt broke, my wife and only child were on the highway. Luckily she was off the highway and only traveling around 20 mph rounding a corner when the bolt sheared off. That very bolt that sheared off was replaced with the exact same diameter and hardness bolt as part of the corrective action. To me, Saturn is still compromising the safety of my wife and only child. I crawled under a 2007 Saturn Vue on the showroom floor at Saturn of binghamton. Just as I suspected. . . . . . . . . . . That very same pivot bolt under the 2007 was much larger in diameter (16mm in diameter roughly). So this was obviously apparent in the engineers design, because they made a change to the newer vehicles. It was obviously a design flaw, so why wasn't ours fixed correctly? what's from keeping this same bolt from shearing off again in say 2 or 3 years. The m12 bolt obviously doesn't have the shear strength for that application. That is why they are now putting a much larger diameter bolt in its place on the newer models. All these 2002-2004 Saturn Vue owners in the country have warm and fuzzy feelings about feeling safe in their vehicle again now that they had the recall campaign performed. When in fact the majority donã‚??t even have a clue what the recall entailed. Saturn is banking on these vehicles to be in the scrap yard before anything major happens again. This is a very serious issue, and needs to be addressed!!! I addressed this issue with Saturn customer service already. They are basically saying tough luck, the recall corrective action is what it is.

10 Rear Suspension problem of the 2004 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 10/23/2005

2004 Vue multiple issues. . . First issue less then 100 miles on vehicle, depressed brakes car continued to creep at stop sign. Diagnostics at Saturn dealership: split in brake line, replaced under warranty. Second issue: less then 300 miles on vehicle, quick stop caused rear seat safety harness to become disconnected from vehicle wall. . Daughter was not restrained and slid forward in seat. Saturn diagnostics: someone was not doing their job the day it was made. . . They tightened screw back into wall of car and have not had issues since. . . This was uncalled for and should have been caught during safety inspection. Third issue: saw details on news about recall on this model of Vue, contacted Saturn dealership about it and was told that we would be getting information in the mail about repairs. Fourth issue: about 20,000 on Vue, went to store and was functional, came out and car would not start, over half a tank of gas in vehicle and gauge shows empty, bought gas can and put 5 more gallons of gas in car. Still shows empty and car would not start, no word on reason for failure beaches it happened today (10/23/05).

11 Rear Suspension problem of the 2004 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 12/29/2004

12 Rear Suspension problem of the 2002 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

I was involved in 2 accidents with my 2002 Saturn Vue. The first time I was driving in rainy conditions when all of a sudden I lost control of my car. I first veered to the left and tried to get control of the car, but wound up doing several 360 degree turns and spun to the right and off the road into a ditch. The second and most recent time, I was following traffic and tapped on my brakes when again I lost control, went to the left and did a 520 and pretty much my car is totalled.

14 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 11/25/2004

I was involved in a rollover incident with my 2003 Saturn Vue while traveling on the new york state thruway. I was traveling at approximately 55-60 mph due to rain and wet roadway. Suddenly, the vehicle began to slide to the left (may have hydroplaned). I attempted to steer out of the slide and the rear of the vehicle swung around clockwise. The vehicle rolled and left the shoulder of the road. The vehicle came to rest on the passenger side in the area off the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle was totalled. I have been told by the insurance appraiser that the left rear suspension gave way and the left rear wheel area folded under. I had received the voluntary recall notice regarding the rear suspension back in August. I received a phone call from the Saturn dealer shortly there after advising me to call the dealership in 3 weeks to schedule the work. I called to schedule the work as directed and was advised that the parts would not be available until January of 2005, and that I would be receiving another letter. I have received nothing further to date.

Failure Date: 07/26/2004

My son was driving my 2004 Saturn Vue on Monday, July 26, he apparently hit a patch of gravel which caused him to lose control. When he attempted to regain control of the vehicle it went into the ditch on the opposite side of the road where the passenger side rear wheel collapsed and the vehicle overturned. There is extensive damage to the vehicle on the front end and passenger side, as well as to the shift casing inside the Vue from when my son's knee slammed into it. The vehicle is still being estimated for insurance purposes (either to total it or repair it).

21 Rear Suspension problem of the 2004 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

I was involved in a car accident on July 14, 2004 while in my 2004 Saturn Vue front wheel drive. I was hit on the rear passenger tire area and the back tire bent under the car and my Saturn was tipped over and spun around with the drivers side down on the pavement. This was not a high speed accident. I was probably about 20miles per hour and the person that hit was probably between 25-35mph. My Saturn Vue sustained about $10,500 damage some of which was the rear suspension. I do not yet know of the final outcome with the insurance whether it will be repaired or totalled. I just happened to read the kansas city star today 7-27-04 abiyt tge government safety agency investigating the Saturn Vue and this fit the description completely.

24 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 05/15/2004

Bark on 5/15/2004 I noticed the rear driver side tire on our 2003 Saturn Vue with uneven wear. The passenger side was also but not as bad. Took car into Saturn they said we must have hit something and bent some part of the rear suspension causing the tire to go out of alinement. My wife drives this car and doesn't remember hitting thing let alone something that could bend metal. They charge us $324. 63 to repair and replace one tire. They said that warrentee did not cover this. Now I see that a test caused the rear suspention to bend and they have a recall. They won't tell me what they are going to do, and I not really sure just what they replaced last time, this might be related? I still need to replace the passenger side tire, as soon as I can afford a new one, but I think this might be related to the recall. If so is Saturn liable for the past repairs? how can I find out what they intend to replace in the recall? thanks for your help.

25 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

27 Rear Suspension problem of the 2003 Saturn VUE

Failure Date: 01/18/2004

My wife was travelling north on interstate rt 83 towards york, PA in our 2003 Saturn Vue. The weather was light rain with the temperatures in the low to mid 30's. The time of day was around noon. Without warning, she lost control of the vehicle. It rolled over, resting on the passenger-side facing oncoming traffic. I viewed the vehicle after the accident. The driver-side rear wheel was crooked, as if the rear axle were bent. However, there was no damage to the driver-side of the vehicle. I thought that was very unusual to have a bent rear wheel with no damage on that side of the vehicle. Now I'm wondering if the wheel collapse defect is what caused our Saturn Vue to roll over.
