Mb USA currently will not do the recall and offers no reasonable alternative. The issue is potential engine compartment/total vehicle fire due to compartment insulation failure. The car just shuts off while I am driving. I can tell now when it is about to shut off. I have had this problem since I purchased the car in 2016. I have taken the car to the dealership and called Mercedes Benz several times and they will not do anything. I will die because the car is getting worse and shuts off more frequently now. Can you get Mercedes Benz to help me? they told me that they don't care if I die due to a bad product they sold me. Please help. We were driving in greensboro nc this afternoon on the way to my husbands birthday dinner when off of bridford? parkway our 2008 Smart car passion for two started malfunctioning all lights flashing on instrument panel & brakes quit & another motorist drove up beside us with window down screaming get out your car is on fire!!! we managed to stop on side of road at woods & jumped out car was on fire looked like under back tires and engine in back! we grabbed what we could save & ran. 911 was called & fire and police came. 2 witnesses also to event we have photos & videos. Our car burned all the way down to frame! total loss! we could have died because we couldnt see the fire behind us under car & if not for the man we may have blown up!!.

I have had it for 6 years. And it has been in for repair, at least 7 times in those somewhere around one time per year. Sometimes twice. All for heating 3 times same piece not sure what to do but it always has to do with no heat to car or overheating my insurance through carmax bout to end gonna cost me alot to keep it even though I love the car seems like a massive problem that mercedes should do something about I've called and got tge run a round.

While driving on the highway and we noticed sudden smoke within the car. The car got very hot. We stopped and opened the engine compartment in the trunk and noticed that the insulation mat in the engine compartment was on fire. We did not notice any causes that could have lead to the burn besides the mat itself.

This car is an ev. Water in the brake light switch, will not let the car recharge. Water and mud in the 12v power cable on the drivers side of the battery pack has caused a 12v power cable fitting to crack. Both of these problems are on the bottom side of the car. I bought the car and less than two weeks the transmission went there was flashing and beeping and the car would not go into gear. I bought a 2009 and in 2008 there was a recall on that model for that transmission problem sometimes the car won't start sometimes now and the hood latch is broken.

As my wife was filling the gas tank it failed to build back pressure that would normally shut off the gas pump. This has occurred twice. Then on mon. The 19th of June after work my wife complained of a strong gas oder inside the vehicle. She drove the car to work on tues. Morning and had the same strong gas smell. She thought that it might be due to overfilling the tank. When she got home on tues. Night we noticed a steady stream of gas pouring out of the vehicle under the car near the passenger side of the vehicle. The gas only streamed out when the engine was running. Once we shutoff the car it would dribble out for a few more minutes then eventually stop. When I turned the car on it would begin flowing fuel onto the ground immediately. I had the car towed to the Mercedes Benz\Smart car dealer located nearest to me. After the car was towed I started to do some research online to determine if this is a common issue. I was surprised to find that there have been many complaints posted to chat room boards regarding a fuel leak and a broken discharge line from the fuel pump to the engine. What I was even more startled to find was literally hundreds of different videos of Smart cars catching on fire. I soon discovered that there is an open investigation with the NHTSA for engine fires on model 2008-2009 Fortwo Smart cars. The investigation number is pe-16-016 the dealership called me today and stated that the fuel pump is leaking gas on top of the tank and that the fuel pump will need to be replaced. They have not dropped the fuel tank yet. They witnessed the fuel leak using a mirror. It is now Friday at 2:15pm pst, and to late for them to start repairing the fuel pump today. The dealership plans to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump on tues. Morning. I will be there to photograph the location of the break on the fuel line and update this complaint after that.

Car shuts down while driving. This happens usually after quick stops or sudden starts like at a red light or when a car suddenly stops on front of me. I have had this issue happen to me several times. I have tried contacting mercedes-benz and the dealership where I bought tge car but they do nothing. I need help getting this issue repaired.

Since I purchased the car from hampton auto mall 757 865 8000 there has been an issue with the steering, brakes, gas system, fuel gauge etc. . The dealership or mercedes refuses to fix the problem since I purchased it in 2016. I have almost died due to steering problems and gas tank. Please get a mechanic to check the steering and for small tears in your gas tank on Smarts. The dealership I bought my car from refuses to fix issue because of lemon laws the service advisor told me so.
