On steep uphills and when you have come to a stop because of a red light or a stop sign, the engine seems to be too weak to push the transmission forward and actually the car my roll back and brakes go in a lock mode which creates a big safety issue.

Takata recall. I was on my way home from work and looked in my rear view mirror and saw smoke. I pulled over to the side of the road only to find my car was beginning to be engulfed in flames. There was no warning, no previous work done on the car. . . Nothing! I was traveling 45 mph on the street. There were no changes in my driving habit or anything like that. I called the police and fire dept. They responded and extinguished the fire. The fire department wrote up a report and determined that the fire started in the engine area. Again, before then, I had no issues with the car, engine or anything electrical. My life was put in danger due to this fire. I reported it to my insurance company and it was an obvious total loss. I am attaching a copy of the fire report for your review.
Driving to a friends house, about a 10-15 min. Drive. . . Friend say he smells smoke, look to the right side onto the mirror and its smoke coming from the back side of my car. Open the back to look at the engine - a lot of smoke is coming out and as the smoke is clearing my friend sees flames and we quickly after grab a hose and call 9-1-1. Don't know what caused the fire, firemen said not to start the car called aaa. Firemen said we got lucky it didn't reach the gas tank.

My 2008 Smart has a little over 36,000 miles on it. Since around 06/16/2015, the gear shift would get stuck and not go into reverse or drive. After a few attempts, it would eventually go into the correct gear. On Sunday 06/28/2015, regardless of numbers of attempt, it only goes from p to n and will not shift to reverse or drive. I purchased this car the day it came on the market in may 2008 and picked it up from mb of laguna nieguel. I even purchased an extended warranty on it (5yrs, 75,000 miles) which at the time of purchase, I was told begins after the initial manufacture's warrenty expires. I am now told the extended warranty is already expired. How does a car with under 36,000 start to have transmission problems when all it's services were completed by the dealership at the time it was required?! mb of beverly hills service advisor (john) told me this mornign it would take 2-3 wks be fore I can take the car in and get a loaner car so they can diagnoise the problem, when there are hundreds of Smart owners who have complained about this same exact problem on the web. A lego car would probably last longer than this vehicle made by Mercedes Benz!!.
Car continue to throw out p0302 code. This is a known issue by manufacturer avout valve not seating properly but have not anything about this problem.
Engine light flashed briefly and went off. Within one mile engine lost all power. As I slowed to a stop, a large cloud of steam erupted. Car was in shop for over a month and most of the engine was replaced. No explanation of lack of warning lamps. A second two week trip to the dealer was needed to resolve all the issues. Car still has engine light on.

While driving at a steady speed of 40mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power. You could hear that the cylinders and pistons stopped working. The vehicle had 2 gallons of gas. We put in 2 more gallons at the adjacent gas station and limped home at 30mph. The dealership picked up the vehicle at our home and drove it from milwaukee to chicago without incident. The dealership said they replaced the purge valve and all 3 ignition coils;come and pick it up. On our drive home, going a steady uninterrupted 40 mph (no stop signs, or stop lights at all) we drove 28 miles and the same problem happened again. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership requested assistance from mercedes. Mercedes declined, stating they would accept the problem when the dealership identified the source of the problem. After 10 days the dealership notified us that they could not identify the source of the problem. We waited through the 30 business day lemon law period and filed for relief.

The car has a problem with not going in reverse when you put the gear shifter in 'r' position? usually after driven and the car is warmed up. The car just rolls when put in reverse, as if though it's in neutral. . When giving gas it just revs the engine and nothing happens. . The car is automatic transmission. And it can be dangerous putting the car in reverse if it's on a slope. The vehicle can roll. This is a normal problem with the 08-09 year. This should defiantly be a recall issue. Thank you for taken the time to read my complaint.
I was driving on a suburban side street when suddenly the engine cut off and the car came rolling to a stop. Fortunately I was not traveling fast and there was room to pull over but I could have been injured if the incident was on a highway. A local mechanic could not identify the problem so I eventually had it towed to the dealership which tested it and found that the coupling motor (a component of the transmission) was faulty and needed to be replaced. The car is running okay now but the repairs cost over $1,000 and it is only 4 years old.
I was on the onramp to a very busy highway going about 50 mph so that I could merge into traffic without slowing traffic down. All of a sudden I lost power. I was able to coast into the right shoulder before the vehicle lost it's momentum. Luckily I did not cause an accident with fast oncoming traffic. I turned the engine off and tried to restart the car about 2 to 3 times with no success. After about 5 minutes I tried again and the car started. I managed to get on the highway and make it home, but ever since this incident I am terrified that it will happen again and I will get into an accident. The car was taken in for service at the Smart dealership after this incident. It had also been taken in for service about one month after we leased it due to these intermittent issues: a loud "popping" noise when shifting into reverse, not going into reverse and rolling as if in neutral (the dashboard indicator would say that the car is in neutral, but the gear stick was in the reverse position),and not accelerating. Both times the car was taken in, the Smart dealer told us that there is nothing wrong with the car because they could not duplicate the issues. It is amazing that they would opt to ignore this dangerous situation considering that this is obviously an ongoing problem with the Smart cars since 2009. Are they waiting for Smart car owner casualties before officially issuing a recall?.
This car is just over a year old, only 24,928 miles on it. It will not come out of park. I called the Smart dealership of buckhead, GA and they told me to try to "re-train" it by turning it on part way 3 times with my foot on the brake and then it would shift. Nope. I called them back up and they said that I was over my 24,000 mile warranty (even if only by 928 miles which is less than 2 weeks worth of driving for me) and because I did my oil changes somewhere else they won't do this as warranty work. (even though I told them I had the records!) how can a transmission fail within 24,000 miles! I am very upset I ever bought a Smart car from these people. Who would allow this type of "quality" out there. This is the worst car I've ever owned! and I will be happy to tell everyone about all the issues I've had with this piece of garbage. I have a Dodge ram that's 8 years old and has never had a problem! bad Smart car people!.

I was driving on the freeway (5 lane) in my 2012 Smart Fortwo passion coupe in the middle lane at 65-70 mph. All of the sudden my accelerator was no longer functional. I looked down and saw that my speedometer and gear indicator were also non-functional. I was able to coast (despite heavy traffic) to the shoulder of the fast lane - it was impossible for me to get to the slow lane shoulder due to heavy traffic. I was able to use the breaks once I hit the shoulder (unsure if power brakes or not) and once stopped was unable to use automatic windows. I could not move the car out of drive for approximately two minutes. After 2 minutes I tried again to move the car out of drive and was able to put it in park. At that point I was able to re-start the car and accelerate enough to get back on the freeway. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to reach the shoulder (as it ended about 200 yards down the freeway). The experience was absolutely terrifying.

Went to start car in garagewhen it make an odd sound and smelled of smoke. Tokko car in to dealer and they said top of engine around valves was blown. 46,000 miles on it. . . Been holding on to it waiting for a recall. Car is still in my shed.
When I start my car and put it in drive it shows reverse on the screen or nothing at all. Then my car will back up instead of going forward. I almost got into an accident a few times because of this problem. This problem has happened to me more than once. The air tubes in the engine already have cracks in them likely because a cheap material was used to produce them, this is very dangerous because it can lead to engine fires in many of these vehicles. In addition, something seems to be already wrong with my transmission and the car is not even that old.
2008 Smart fourtwo passion. 25,380 miles. Car failed to start. Towed to dealership and was informed that the cylinder head had cracked. Engine had to essentially be completely rebuilt. Initial cost estimate was over $6000. After much haggling it was lowered to $3000. Note the Smart warranty is 2 years, 24,000 miles.
