4 Clutch Broken problem of the 2016 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 12/16/2016

My complaint pertains to my 2016 Subaru wrx clutch. The clutch stopped working after approximately 14,000 miles and 15 months of ownership. The dealership and Subaru of America have judged this to be regular user wear and tear and are not covering it under warranty. I was told by the service manager and the soa that this is not an unusual occurrence. The clutch failed without warning in December 2016 while I was traveling on the highway at about 60 mph. I had put the vehicle in neutral while coasting down a hill. When I tried to re-enter gear at the base of the hill I found the gear box resisted entering all gears. I was unable to put the car back into gear and was forced to make an emergency exit from the flow of traffic to the shoulder. My car only reengaged into gear when I turned it off, put the car into gear (with some struggle), and then restarted the car. I immediately took the car to a service station. I was exceptionally lucky that I was able to perform the emergency exit from traffic without getting into a crash. Some additional notes on issue. First, the car had undergone regularly scheduled maintenance less than 2 months prior. That maintenance schedule includes an inspection of the vehicles transmission. The authorized Subaru dealership that performed the maintenance reported no problems with the transmission. Second, the vehicle is primarily used as a highway commuter. It has not been used for any motorsport, track racing, extreme driving. Third, for what it's worth I know how to drive a manual transmission car. This is my 6th manual transmission car in 15 years and this is my first-ever clutch issue. For a vehicle to fail in such a spectacular fashion with no warning so soon after regular maintenance and at such low mileage is, in my opinion, a serious hazard.

5 Clutch Broken problem of the 2015 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 12/13/2014

On my 24k service. Vehicle was checked in at briggs Subaru of lawrence, for typical recommended service. After leaving the service center once the service was completed, a short while down the road, I came to a stop at a red light placing the car in neutral. When the light turned green, I was unable to shift into gear to continue. I had to call the service center, and they had to pay for the tow back to the service center. Where a service tech joined me outside, he then proceeded to start the vehicle, while in neutral; revved the rpm to roughly 5k and shifted into first. The vehicle made a terrible grinding sound, lurched forward, and was able to be shifted normally at this point. This stalling\inability to shift into gear\downshift has happened on subsequent adventures in the wrx, while moving and at a stop after this point. At each designated service interval, I reported this to my service advisor; they could never replicate the issue. Proceeding to the 60k service, the clutch has since failed, and I¿ve had numerous stalls where I was unable to shift into gear, the certified Subaru repair center, states this is not covered under warranty and in no way does my previous issues with not shifting into gear effect the clutch or any interconnected part thereof. Just imagine having this stalling or clutch failure happen while accelerating to get on the freeway or a busy intersection, like I myself have experienced. This is a major safety concern.

6 Clutch Broken problem of the 2015 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 12/08/2014

Purchased the vehicle new with less than ten miles on odometer. From new, the vehicle produced a strong odor of burning or melting plastic every time it was driven. Clutch began slipping and then catastrophically failed at 5100 miles. Towed to dealership, clutch replaced. At 7,200 miles, clutch throw-out bearing failed, dealer replaced. At 11,709 miles, throw out bearing failed again, dealer discovered clutch was on the verge of second failure during service. A second replacement clutch has been ordered. Advised by service manager that cause of all failures was that a "plug" of some sort had worked loose, causing clutch to remain engaged at all times, leading to clutch failure. If clutch failure occurred at intersection or rail crossing, this manufacturing defect could lead to the severe injury or even the death of occupants in the disabled vehicle, as this failure renders the vehicle immobile.

7 Clutch Broken problem of the 2013 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

Brand new off the lot clutch failed after 500 miles. Replaced at no cost, but dealer accused 76-year-old driver of burning rubber. Second clutch good, but still engages very high and quick. Frequent stalls result.

8 Clutch Broken problem of the 2008 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

Loud clicking/cracking noise started about a year ago when the clutch is let out. Did not think too much about it. In November of 2014, the clicking stopped and was left with an eerie squeaking sound. This is when I started to investigate what it is. Turns out, the firewall is too thin to handle the pressure from the brake/clutch mechanism. The pins that go through the firewall get worn away from the thin firewall causing the spot welds to fail. The car is currently at a Subaru dealership and they have acknowleged that it is the spot welds. I am waiting to hear more from Subaru of America to see if they will acknowlege that this is in fact a manufactures defect and not something that is caused by normal wear and tear. If that was the case there would not be this many complaints about this issue. There should be a recall issued on this manufacturing defect. If there are this many complaints here, how many cars are out there with drivers that are oblivious to this defect that are still driving with brakes/clutch that could fail at any time?.

9 Clutch Broken problem of the 2013 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 04/15/2013

While idling without car in gear or clutch engaged, hot smell noted. Intermittent issue until for about 18 months and 25,000 miles until constant burning smell as well as new-onset severe clutch slippage. No racing or launching, only easy driving, with majority highway miles. Appears to be burnt clutch with flywheel damage possible. This began with the car new and while only highway miles. It was initially explaned away as an assembly coating cooking off and normal and to be expected. It now is unsafe to drive on the highway due to sudden loss of acceleration and minimal power.
