Throw out bearing gave out twice at within few thousand miles in less than 1 year. Vehicle was less than 36,000 miles. Dealership repaired it twice. Symptom was rattling noise that resolved when clutch pedal was being pressed. Rattling noise present in gear and in neutral.

Firewall spot welds have failed, causing significant lateral play in the clutch pedal. I have had some significant trouble trying to get it into gear. So I have had trouble shifting gears while at highway speeds and have had trouble getting it in reverse in order to pull out of a parking spot. The brake pedal is next in-line to be affected by the sheet metal tear. I keep hearing that this problem is not covered under any recall. Nor is it a warranty item at this year and mileage (105,000). This is a very significant issue and will cost a great deal (over $1000) to fix. This being a weld issue and not a wear issue makes me think that the factory ought to cover this safety issue. This has been happening for the last year and a half. But I have only recently discovered the true extent of the problem.

I purchased a 2008 Subaru Impreza Wrx. Every time the clutch is engaged or disengaged a creak/pop noise can be heard. You can also see the clutch and brake pedal move significantly. The spot welds on the firewall/bulkhead have separated making it very difficult to get into gear and making the clutch very firm. This needs to be a recall. People can not afford this very expensive while making payments on their vehicle. This problem is also causing premature wear on transmission parts as well. I have 4 Subarus and if they don't make this right I will not buy another. Very sad to say considering I work for them building engines.
Failed welds connecting pedal panel to the firewall. Results in loud squeaking when clutch pedal is depressed/released and car is extremely difficult to get in or out of gear. Causes movement of brake pedal as well which could cause major issues. This happens moving and parked.

The clutch pedal on my 2013 wrx makes a loud creaking noise every time it's depressed. When I investigated the noise, I noticed that the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly (attached to the forward firewall) shifts approx 1/4 inch every time the clutch pedal is depressed. I found that the three spot welds securing the clutch pedal bracket to the forward firewall could be broken. From the outside of the firewall, just under the windshield wipers, I saw the spot welds pulling away from the firewall every time the clutch pedal was depressed. This allows the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly to move, causing the creaking noise. If the bracket completely separates from the firewall, the clutch may become completely inoperative - especially dangerous while driving. I have also read online that this manufacturing defect can also cause your clutch to go out quicker. The firewall needs to be re-welded and reinforced and a new clutch needs to be installed. . While driving the vehicle I noticed while depressing my brakes or clutch, I would hear a "popping sound. " also I noticed the clutch pedal and the brake pedal would move towards the left together (oppose to just up and down) when depressing the clutch pedal. It seems like the whole firewall where the clutch and brake pedals are attached too is moving when depressed. This happens all the time now when clutch pedal is depressed.
I started having problems with the clutch/transmission in my 2016 wrx at 580 miles. I was exiting a highway and pulled the transmission out of 6th. As I was about to shift into 3rd to go through the intersection I was unable to shift into any gear (stuck in neutral) with the clutch pedal fully depressed. I had to pull over turn the car off and restart it before I could get the transmission into gear. The problem occurred again at approximately 3500 miles. This time I was driving down the highway shifting from 5th into 6th. I pressed the clutch pulled the transmission out of 5th and could not get it into 6th or any gear. I pulled onto the shoulder and still could not get the car into any gear. I turned the car off and went back to restart, with the transmission in neutral, when I let up off the clutch the car stalled. I put the transmission into 1st, pressed the clutch and started the car. When the car started this time it lunged forward. I was able to get back on the highway. I immediately took the car to the local Subaru dealer. They were unable to duplicate the problem and said there was nothing else the can do until the are able to duplicate the problem. Since the second occurrence I started noticing a strong burnt smell at low speed (shifting 1st to 2nd) and at cruising highway speeds in 6th gear. About 1000 miles later it happened again this time not only could I not shift into any gear I could not get the clutch pedal to come up all the way, this occurred at 35mph. I had to press the clutch several times in order to get it to come up fully, then I was able to get the vehicle into gear. The burning smell was present when this happened. I took the vehicle into the dealership I purchased the car from. They have been unable to duplicate the problem. They also claim they can't work on the car until they can duplicate the issue.

I bought this vehicle used from a dealership in January of 2015 with over 100,000 miles on the odometer. After a few months of driving it I began to hear a click every time I depressed the clutch pedal. I looked into the issue to see if it was a common problem and if there was an easy fix to it. Turns out six of the seven spot welds that hold my clutch and brake assembly to the firewall were cracked. There is a recall for this issue already but they wont service vehicles past 40,000 miles. This does not help me seeing as the car is far past 40,000. Not only is this a safety issue but it is also causing other parts of the car to prematurely wear out such as the clutch and the release bearing. I need help.
Clutch pedal makes squeaking noise when fully depressed while attempting to engage into first gear. It will also make a clicking type noise when clutch pedal is only depressed 25% of the way down. Can easily be replicated day or night, hot or cold. Known issue but dealership service has no warrant fix for the problem.

The welds supporting the clutch pedal and brake pedal assembly have broken. The result is a prominent squeaking sound and a noticeable lateral movement of the pedal assembly to the left. This is a reoccurring issue as it had previously been addressed and repaired back in June of 2014. At the time Subaru of America agreed to pay for half of the repairs as the vehicle was outside of warranty coverage. The new issue are from broken welds in another area that was not inspected or did not appear to need repair at the time. Mileage at time of repair was 74,839, current mileage is 84,420 (3/16/2015). However, further research on this issue indicate that it is a widespread issue that has affected many other Subaru impreza owners with model years 2008 through 20012. This is not the result of owner neglect, misuse, or improper maintenance. My safety concern is that this does appear to have an impact on the functionality of clutch pedal and brakes under all normal conditions of use. Full breakage of the assembly could result in loss of control, injury, and or death. Original claim to soa was #1-5644625090, represented by rich.
The part of the steel body under the dash that supports the clutch pedal shaft assembly fractures into two pieces due to flex forces over time. This results in the clutch master cylinder flexing at its mounting point on the firewall when clutch pedal is depressed. Severed squeaking and noise is heard every time the clutch is depressed as a result. Welding is not feasible as it is located un the dash (above the accelerator pedal) and would cause fire around flammable materials. This can be seen on youtube videos submitted by Subaru wrx owners and affects 2008-2014 wrx impreza vehicles. Should firewall fracture due to this flex over time, ability to disengage the clutch by pressing the pedal would result and present a very high probability of crash or accident as a lack of vehicle control and ability to stop vehicle. . I purchased my wrx in 2009 from the local Subaru dealer here in chicago. I am original owner of this vehicle. A year ago I first noticed a problem with the clutch pedal. When fully pressed it made a loud creaking noise. When I investigated the noise I noticed that the entire clutch + pedal bracket assembly moves and shifts approximately 1/4 inch. When I removed windshield wipers I noticed that 4 spot welds that secure the clutch pedal bracket to the forward firewall are broken. I can see holes in the firewall sheet metal every time I press the clutch pedal. The entire clutch bracket assembly moves out of alignment causing this cracking noise. Finally two weeks ago the noise went away all by itself. I noticed that the entire assembly shifts even more to one side when clutch is pressed and I have extreme trouble shifting into a gear. I think that entire bracket separated from the mounting points. I fear that clutch may become inoperable.
This is the well known and documented firewall weld issue for the pedal bracket. The welds have broken and the pedal bracket now shifts when I press down on the clutch. It makes a loud popping noise as well as creaking and squeaking. If left unchecked, the issue will worsen and the entire bracket may break off while driving, causing a huge safety concern. Subaru needs to be forced to recall this and pay to fix all of them.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Subaru wrx. The the contact stated that when pressing the clutch the break pedal bracket moves. The vehicle was driven to the dealer and diagnosed as the clutch plate which is boated together moves. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 94,000. Rk.
When driving home I was exiting the highway when my brake petal when to the floor with no pressure. I used the emergency brake and clutch to get out of gear to slow down. I was able to slow down to a stop and when I stopped my breaks continued to work. I took my car into a Subaru dealership and was told that the welds on my firewall were broken that hold on my clutch and brake pedal assembly.
About 6-8 months ago I had my wrx in for work and pointed out a loud clunk that was happening as I depressed the clutch pedal. I was told it was no concern but that they could diagnose it further for a cost. Thinking it was fine I continue use, and eventually the noise went away. Recently, my car was unable to shift into reverse and my clutch felt rather stiff. Having looked at it the spring behind my pedal was bending sideways and my entire firewall was flexing as I pushed in the clutch. I took this back to the same dealership that told me there was no noticable problem and they told me that I needed. To replace my clutch, they needed to r&r my dash to look for broken welds and possible replace the pedal assembly. To the price of $3500. 00. I then came online to see quite a few posts in multiple places of the identical problem.
The contact owns a 2009 Subaru Impreza Wrx (n/a). The contact stated that while traveling approximately 70 mph, the vehicle had a loss of power as the speed reduced to 30 mph intermittently. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the clutch and the fly wheel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.
I recently started having a creaking noise every time I would depress the clutch on my 2009 wrx sedan. When I push the clutch in I noticed that the brake pedal would also move approximately a ¼ of an inch. What really got me worried was seeing the firewall flexing and moving. The master cylinder brace was also moving around as the clutch was being pressed. I was able to see both by having the window cowl off and hood opened. After that happened I went online and saw that other 2008+ wrx owners are having this same problem and the diagnosis was failing/broken firewall spot welds.
Clutch petal starting squeaking and gears would not synch well during shifting which indicated the clutch would not fully disengage. Brought to dealer and diagnosed that the clutch pedal mounting bracket has broken free of the firewall, causing damage to the firewall and causing the vehicle to be inoperable. Subaru will not cover the repair and there is no recall on file. This is a common problem for this vehicle.
The car has a manual transmission and I noticed significant side way back and forth movement in the clutch pedal and brake pedal while the car was stationary. In the last week it has become very difficult to engage the clutch and get the car in gear. I took the car in to a Subaru dealership and they knew right away what the problem was. Spot welds on the pedal mounts to the firewall were failing. They then sent me to a body shop, which has had experience making the necessary repair. Apparently the body shop has repaired several Subaru wrxs with the same problem. Of course they want me to pay for the repair.
When I bought the car from the used car lot I noticed the clutch pedal when being pressed and depressed made a squeaking noise. I figured it was probably lack of lubrication so I went ahead and lubricated the pedal assembly and the noise stayed the same. Couple months go by and the noise got much louder and sometimes a loud pop would occur. Recently I did some research and found out that many other wrx owners have had the same issue. So I followed the procedures to check the cause of the noise and it seems to be that the welds on the firewall have been broken and are causing the noise. I also noticed my brake pedal shifts every time I press the clutch pedal. As time progresses it feels as if its getting harder to shift. I'm afraid that this issue is causing premature wear of the transmission. Every time I press the clutch pedal I fear that the clutch pedal assembly is going to rip off the firewall.
I was having a problem shifting gears and noticed that when I depressed the clutch that the brake pedal was moving also. I took the vehicle to a local repair shop and they discovered that the pedal mounting bracket that is spotwelded to the firewall had broken at the welds. I was quoted $1200 for the repairs as the dash & steering column have to be removed. I was told that this is an unsafe condition as it could cause an accident. I feel that Subaru should be responsible for the cost of the repairs as this is clearly a design defect and a safety issue.
I recognized a squeeking sound every time I depressed my clutch to shift the car. Having had an oil change, I wasn't scheduled for car maintenance for 3 months or 3,000 miles. When I took my car to my mechanic for service, I asked them to check the squeeking sound. The technician found a that the structure of the firewall at the clutch and brake pedal assembly was failing - the spot welds were shattered. The technician removed the wiper blade assembly and found that the pedal assembly flexes to the point of moving the firewall out at the clutch master and that the firewall is cracked at the clutch cylinder. After researching the issue, the technician learned the problem is inherent in this particular year and model, as well as in the 2009 model. The technician recommends removing the dashboard, brake booster, master cylinder, and clutch cylinder in order to identify and weld the broken pieces of the bracket that should be holding the clutch pedal assembly in place. This requires only welding and replacing the clutch pedal assembly, as well as flushing the brake and clutch fluid. The overall concern with this structural failure is that the degradation of the firewall and clutch assembly will create an issue where my safety is at risk when I lose the ability to drive the vehicle because shifting will fail. In a low or high speed situation, I would need to down or up shift my car to help avoid collision or lessen the impact of a collision. Without this ability, I put my life, my passenger's life and other drivers' lives in danger. Given that this is a widespread issue with the make, model and year, I believe Subaru should issue a recall. I am especially concerned to find that my particular car is on the pull down menu with the ntsb, and until my car started to fail, I heard nothing from the ntsb, Subaru or the dealerships regarding this issue. Response expected.
I have been having a strange noise coming from my clutch every time I would go to switch gears. I then called Subaru of America and filed a case in there service department. They then told me to take it into a dealer to have it looked at. After taking my Subaru to a local dealer and having my car looked at the mechanic in his service write up said "clutch pedal assembly loose and moving". I was also told that the reason for this issue was because the welds holding the assembly to the firewall had broken off and now need to be re-welded back together so that they will work again. The dealer told me that they do not feel that it is that big of a safety issue and released me with the car to go back home in. However every time the pedal is pressed the entire assembly moves side to side making the welds even less strong. After looking this issue up online I noticed that I am not the only other person that has had this issue and many feel like it is a safety issue that Subaru is failed to look into.
Welds holding the clutch and brake pedal assembly to the firewall are breaking. Depressing the clutch causes flexing. If/when it breaks off, the car will be dangerous due to no foot braking and an engaged clutch. Seems like a common problem with this model. Time for a manufacturer paid fix.
As verified by the dealership: the firewall welds keeping the clutch brackets in place are cracked. This causes the pedal assembly to have play and move as unintended. If the pedal bracket were to become more unstable the vehicle could be uncontrollable during use.
On my 2009 Subaru Impreza Wrx, I've dealt with a squeaky clutch pedal for quite some time, close to 30k miles now. Within the past 5k miles, a clicking sound has occurred at the same time and within the past 1k miles the sound has grown significantly worse with a grinding sound in addition to all previous sounds. Upon further inspection the entire pedal bracket assembly moves upon clutch or brake pedal engagement. In addition, clutch cylinder moves when it should be static. This is all due to the firewall being too thin, flexing, and ultimately the metal endured enough fatigue to break around the pedal bracket spot welds. This issue is a safety issue because the pedal assembly should never move, nor should it separate from the firewall. No recall as of yet, despite this being a known issue to the manufacturer for several years. Current mileage is 56,740 miles.
Spot welds on the clutch pedal bracket attached to the firewall have cracked causing a distinct squeaking noise and hard shifting. Mechanic told me that the bracket separation is pushing against the clutch, causing a sideways push into the clutch master cylinder. This does not allow for full engagement of the clutch when shifting gears and is flexing the master cylinder, causing additional stress and damage. Additionally, the brake pedal is being depressed by approximately 1/2" during every clutch engagement. Subaru of America is only offering to cover 50% of the work to correct their design/manufacturing defect. This is ridiculous. No vehicle should experience firewall damage at any mileage, let alone a defect so dangerous that it impacts shifting and breaking.
First at all merry christmas! ill try my best to describe what happened with the car. Its 5 speed manual transmission . On my way home to see my family for christmas heard loud pop sound from under the dash. Kinda scared me but after the inspection didn't see any damage. Turned the engine on again but noticed right away that my clutch pedal doesn't feel the same. ( I have stock clutch and transmission) right now clutch pedal makes squeezing noise, and my brake pedal moves when I push the clutch pedal . At home opened the hood and asked my dad to push the clutch pedal couple times, noticed that clutch master cylinder is noticeably moving all over the place. Checked online for the same symptoms and realized my firewall welds are cracked from under the dash , well not the best find but its christmas so just tried to go over it and write you this email. . The welds where the clutch pedal attaches to the firewall are breaking. The same bracket is attached to the brake pedal. The entire brake & clutch assembly could break off of the firewall. This could result in a loss of braking.
When depressing clutch pedal; a creaking noise is evident. Upon inspection 2 spot welds holding clutch pedal bracket assembly to firewall are broken. This allows clutch slave cylinder to move as well as brake pedal movement when clutch is applied.
Clutch started making a creaking noise when pressing in and out. Shifting gears has also become more difficult like the clutch isn't fully engaging and disengaging. I also noticed the whole assembly shifts (clutch and brake pedals) when pressing down on the clutch. Turns out the spot welds on the bracket that hold the assembly are completely broken, causing flex to the clutch and brake assembly. If that bracket rips off, could lose braking power. This is unsafe and needs to be recalled.
