Subaru Impreza Wrx owners have reported 5 problems related to transmission not go into gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Driving on the freeway during rush hour and tried to downshift (manual transmission) from 6th gear to 3rd since traffic slowed down but the shifter won't go into gear and I was going up hill. I tried 4th, 5th, 3rd again, 2nd, and I'm slow enough to try even 1st and still won't go into gear. Fortunately I had enough momentum to get to the shoulder going up hill in the freeway. I had it towed to the dealer and the service rep could not shift it into gear also. He was able to put it into the service bay by turning off the engine, putting it into gear, turning on the engine and driving it. At that point it shifts just fine and was told to let them know if it happens again. This is a big safety concern for me if it happens again since I won't be able to shift/accelerate to avoid obstacles or prevent accidents. There are times when I've felt that it's been a little hesitant to get into gear.

Once, three months after purchasing, and a second time eight months later, my vehicle suddenly would not enter gears from neutral. In the first event, the car was still warming up, driving quickly. In the second event, the car was at running temperature, driven for one hour, driving conservatively. In both situations, I had to pull over to the side of the road and call a tow. ~1 hour later, the vehicle worked fine. No burnt clutch smell, no change in the feeling of the clutch/gears. Dealership could not replicate the problem, corporate is denying the problem.
On 8/25 my 2002 wrx wagon would not go into any gear, with engine on or off. I called the dealer and was told to have the car towed in,when it was dropped off I was there, the service person tried to shift it and got it to go into gear. When they tried to engage reverse,it ground the gears 4 times, they said the car was not stopped when they tried,I was standing right there,it was not moving!. This car has had transmission concerns before and has been to the dealer on three other visits where they could not duplicate the problem with grinding gears while driving, this could cause in my opinion a saftey issue ,distraction while driving. Do we have to experience a transmission locking up causing injury or death before it is delt with?. I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.

I own a 2003 Subaru wrx sedan with a manual transmission and quite often when shifting gears 2nd,3rd,4th and especialy in 5th gear it tends to not shift in gear(gets stuck) and grinds from time to time. This scares me when I get on the expressway and I have to shift gears to get in the flow of traffic I'm affraid that its going to stick and cause a accident (it has gotten stuck in traffic and have almost had a accident). It happens during normal driveing conditions even when I shift fron neutral to reverse it will grind. It has been a problem since I bought the car in 6-27-03 I've taken the car to the dealership and asked for on of their technician drove my car and said that there is nothing wrong when shifting gears. The car has no modifications.

The standard transmission commonly fails to go into gear. This has occurred at a stop and also while moving. Double clutching is commonly necessary in order to engage the desired gear.
